Book The One Act Play Companion

Download or read book The One Act Play Companion written by Colin Dolley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one-act play stands apart as a distinct art form with some well known writers providing specialist material, among them Bernard Shaw, Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter, Caryl Churchill. Alan Ayckbourn, Edward Albee and Tennesee Williams. There are also lesser-known writers with plenty of material to offer, yet sourcing one-act plays to perform is notoriously hard. This companion is the first book to survey the work of over 250 playwrights in an illuminating A-Z guide. Multiple styles, nationalities and periods are covered, offering a treasure trove of compelling moments of theatre waiting to be discovered. Guidance on performing and staging one-act plays is also covered as well as essential contact information and where to apply for performance rights. A chapter introducing the history of the one-act play rounds off the title as a definitive guide.

Book The Villainous Stage

Download or read book The Villainous Stage written by Marvin Lachman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live theatre was once the main entertainment medium in the United States and the United Kingdom. The preeminent dramatists and actors of the day wrote and performed in numerous plays in which crime was a major plot element. This remains true today, especially with the longest-running shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Sweeney Todd. While hundreds of books have been published about crime fiction in film and on television, the topic of stage mysteries has been largely unexplored. Covering productions from the 18th century to the 2013-2014 theatre season, this is the first history of crime plays according to subject matter. More than 20 categories are identified, including whodunits, comic mysteries, courtroom dramas, musicals, crook plays, social issues, Sherlock Holmes, and Agatha Christie. Nearly 900 plays are described, including the reactions of critics and audiences.

Book The Gift and the Giving

  • Author : Tim Kelly
  • Publisher : Samuel French, Inc.
  • Release : 1973
  • ISBN : 9780573621833

Download or read book The Gift and the Giving written by Tim Kelly and published by Samuel French, Inc.. This book was released on 1973 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gift and the giving is a contemporary play dealing with the question of man's faith in the value of personal commitment. Four young people take shelter in a church as they pause on their way to the state capitol where they hope to dramatize their plea for social change. They have vowed to fast until the march is completed, but now thoughts of food and comfort possess them. Their belief in the success of their goal is further weakened as unforeseen circumstances and the threat of physical harm work to defeat them. Only one is likely to complete the trek to the capitol steps, but the message he leaves with the others is that one committed man, with faith in his beliefs, can sometimes work small miracles. An unusual aspect is that the 'cause' is never specified, thus calling on the audience's imagination for participation. Designed for a youthful cast, the play is written for production in a church with the audience sitting in the pews. It can also be performed on a bare stage or at any number of locales.
