Book Shakespeare and the Story

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Story written by Joan Rees and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a commonplace of Shakespeare criticism that he invented few of the plots of his plays and the sources he drew upon have been often and rewardingly studied. The emphasis of this book, however, is not on sources but on what may be called Shakespeare's story-telling technique especially as seen in the articulation and pacing of events. Ranging widely through the canon, the book identifies characteristic problems and achievements which occur in the course of Shakespeare's handling of his story material. Different aspects of Shakespeare's treatment of, and attitude to, story are studied with reference groups of plays and, in two final chapters, essays on Hamlet and King Lear apply and extend the findings of the preceding discussions. The point of view adopted serves, above all, to bring out the vitality and resourcefulness of Shakespeare's creative imagination, recognition of which must underpin all commentary but may easily be lost to sight in the increasing sophistication of criticism and scholarship.

Book With Shakespeare s Eyes

Download or read book With Shakespeare s Eyes written by Catherine O'Neil and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Shakespeare's Eyes is the first monograph to focus exclusively on the relationship between the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and Shakespeare. Taking into account contemporary perceptions of Shakespeare in print and on the Russian stage, O'Neil examines all levels of poetic influence of Shakespeare on Pushkin. In addition to untangling the central presence of Shakespeare on Pushkin's historical tragedy 'Boris Godunov'. O'Neil examines Shakepeare's influence in many other works by Pushkin, an influence that ranges from the textual to the conceptual. The Shakespeare plays addressed most closely in this book are 'Othello', 'Measure for Measure', and 'Julius Ceasar', all of which interact in a dynamic way with Pushkin's creative development. This book will help English readers understand better what it means to say Pushkin is 'the Shakespeare of Russia.' Catherine O'Neil is Assistant Professor of Russian at the University of Denver.

Book Nabokov s Shakespeare

Download or read book Nabokov s Shakespeare written by Samuel Schuman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nabokov's Shakespeare is a comprehensive study of an important and interesting literary relationship. It explores the many and deep ways in which the works of Shakespeare, the greatest writer of the English language, penetrate the novels of Vladimir Nabokov, the finest English prose stylist of the twentieth century. As a Russian youth, Nabokov had read all of Shakespeare, in English. He claimed a shared birthday with the Bard, and some of his most highly regarded novels (Lolita, Pale Fire and Ada) are infused with Shakespeare and Shakespeareanisms. Across a gulf of over three centuries and half the globe, Shakespeare was an enormous influence on the twentieth-century Russian/American author. Nabokov uses Shakespeare and Shakespeare's works in a surprisingly wide variety of ways, from the most casual references to deep thematic links (e.g., Humbert Humbert, the narrator and protagonist of Lolita sees himself as The Tempest's Caliban). Schuman provides a taxonomy of Nabokov's Shakespeareanisms; a quantitative analysis of Shakespeare in Nabokov; an examination of Nabokov's Russian works, his early English novels, the non-Novelistic writings (poetry, criticism, stories), Nabokov's major works, and his final novels; and a discussion of the nature of literaryrelationships and influence. With a Foreword by Brian Boyd"--

Book Shakespeare and Conceptual Blending

Download or read book Shakespeare and Conceptual Blending written by Michael Booth and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how Shakespeare’s excellence as storyteller, wit and poet reflects the creative process of conceptual blending. Cognitive theory provides a wealth of new ideas that illuminate Shakespeare, even as he illuminates them, and the theory of blending, or conceptual integration, strikingly corroborates and amplifies both classic and current insights of literary criticism. This study explores how Shakespeare crafted his plots by fusing diverse story elements and compressing incidents to strengthen dramatic illusion; considers Shakespeare’s wit as involving sudden incongruities and a reckoning among differing points of view; interrogates how blending generates the “strange meaning” that distinguishes poetic expression; and situates the project in relation to other cognitive literary criticism. This book is of particular significance to scholars and students of Shakespeare and cognitive theory, as well as readers curious about how the mind works.
