Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1602 by William Shakespeare, The Merry Wives of Windsor features the popular figure Sir John Falstaff, who first appeared in Henry IV, Part 1 and Part 2. Some speculate that Merry Wives was written at the behest of Queen Elizabeth I, who wanted to see Falstaff in love; and that Shakespeare was forced to rush its creation as a result, and so it remains one of Shakespeare’s lesser-regarded plays. The play revolves around two intertwined plots: the adventures of the rogue Falstaff who plans to seduce several local wives, and the story of young Anne Page who is being wooed by prominent citizens while she has her sights set on young Fenton. The wives come together to teach Falstaff a lesson, and in the end love triumphs. The Merry Wives of Windsor is believed to have been first performed in 1597 and was subsequently published in quarto in 1602, in a second quarto in 1619, and then in the 1623 First Folio. Despite holding a lesser place in Shakespeare’s canon, it was one of the first Shakespearean plays to be performed in 1660, after the reinstatement of Charles II and theatre once again was permitted to be performed in London. This Standard Ebooks edition is based on Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and John Dover Wilson’s 1923 Cambridge edition. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book The Merry Wives of Windsor Annotated

Download or read book The Merry Wives of Windsor Annotated written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Merry Wives of Windsor or Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy by William Shakespeare first published in 1602, though believed to have been written in or before 1597. The Windsor of the play's title is a reference to the town of Windsor, also the location of Windsor Castle, in Berkshire, England. Though nominally set in the reign of Henry IV or early in the reign of Henry V, the play makes no pretence to exist outside contemporary Elizabethan era English middle class life. It features the character Sir John Falstaff, the fat knight who had previously been featured in Henry IV, Part 1 and Part 2. It has been adapted for the opera at least ten times. The play is one of Shakespeare's lesser-regarded works among literary critics. Tradition has it that The Merry Wives of Windsor was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. After watching Henry IV Part I she asked Shakespeare to write a play showing Falstaff in love.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor, 1602 The following entries relating to the Merry Wives appear on the Registers of the Stationers Company: 18 Ianuarij [1602] ... John Busby Entred for his copie vnder the hand of master Seton /A booke called An excellent and pleasant conceited commedie of Sir Iohn ffaulstof and the merry wyves of Windesor Arthure Iohnson Entred for his Copye by assignement from John Busbye, A booke Called an excellent and pleasant conceyted Comedie of Sir Iohn ffaulstafe and the merye wyves of Windsor ... I do not propose to discuss in this place the significance of the transactions here recorded, since to do so at all adequately would involve a considerable excursion into a difficult region of Shakespearian bibliography. Suffice it to say that while the entry implies that the publication of the play was in more or less immediate projection, the transfer does not imply, as some have thought, that publication had already taken place. It followed, however, with no long delay, for the date 1602 on the title-page of the quarto shows that the volume was issued in any case before 25 March 1603, most probably before the end of December 1602.
