Book Shakespeare s Demonology

Download or read book Shakespeare s Demonology written by Marion Gibson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is postdramatic theatre political and if so how? How does it relate to Brecht's ideas of political theatre, for example? How can we account for the relationship between aesthetics and politics in new forms of theatre, playwriting, and performance? The chapters in this book discuss crucial aspects of the issues raised by the postdramatic turn in theatre in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century: the status of the audience and modes of spectatorship in postdramatic theatre; the political claims of postdramatic theatre; postdramatic theatre's ongoing relationship with the dramatic tradition; its dialectical qualities, or its eschewing of the dialectic; questions of representation and the real in theatre; the role of bodies, perception, appearance and theatricality in postdramatic theatre; as well as subjectivity and agency in postdramatic theatre, dance and performance. Offering analyses of a wide range of international performance examples, scholars in this volume engage with Hans-Thies Lehmann's theoretical positions both affirmatively and critically, relating them to other approaches by thinkers ranging from early theorists such as Brecht, Adorno and Benjamin, to contemporary thinkers such as Fischer-Lichte, Rancière and others

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonology: Of King James I was written and published in 1597 by King James VI of Scotland (later also James I of England) as a philosophical dissertation on contemporary necromancy and the historical relationships between the various methods of divination used from ancient black magic. This included a study on demonology and the methods demons used to bother troubled men. It also touches on topics such as werewolves and vampires. It was a political yet theological statement to educate a misinformed populace on the history, practices and implications of sorcery and the reasons for persecuting a person in a Christian society accused of being a witch under the rule of canonical law. This book is believed to be one of the main sources used by William Shakespeare in the production of Macbeth. Shakespeare attributed many quotes and rituals found within the book directly to the Weird Sisters, yet also attributed the Scottish themes and settings referenced from the trials in which King James was involved.

Book excerpt: No other monarch has had the impact on English literature of King James VI of Scotland, and later James I of England. His version of the bible is still widely available, and praised for its poetic imagery. In this earlier book (first published in 1597), James took on the task of proving witches were real, and dangerous. Around this time other authors (such as Reginald Scott) were arguing that the fear of witchcraft was irrational and unfounded, and that any proof available was the result of panic, prejudice and sleight of hand. James however, who had prosecuted witches personally, believed that they were all too real, and servants of Satan besides. He would inspire later witch hunters, and also Shakespeare, who used the book as the basis for the witches in Macbeth.

Book The Demonology of King James I

Download or read book The Demonology of King James I written by Donald Tyson and published by Llewellyn Worldwide. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by King James I and published in 1597, the original edition of Demonology is widely regarded as one of the most interesting and controversial religious writings in history, yet because it is written in the language of its day, it has been notoriously difficult to understand. Now occult scholar Donald Tyson has modernized and annotated the original text, making this historically important work accessible to contemporary readers. Also deciphered here, for the first time, is the anonymous tract News from Scotland, an account of the North Berwick witch trials over which King James presided. Tyson examines King James' obsession with witches and their alleged attempts on his life, and offers a knowledgeable and sympathetic look at the details of magick and witchcraft in the Jacobean period. Demonology features historical woodcut illustrations and includes the original old English texts in their entirety. This reference work is the key to an essential source text on seventeenth-century witchcraft and the Scottish witch trials
