Meanwhile the notes had been used with classes in school and out of school, and received such revision as was suggested by that experience and by further study of Shakespeare. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Comedy of the Merchant of Venice: Critical Comments, Suggestions and Plans for Study, Specimens of Examination Papers, and Topics for Essays This edition of The Merchant of Venice is intended for the special needs of students, but it is hoped that the general reader may find it useful. It will be found to differ from other school editions in four important respects: - First, The notes, though copious, are all arranged upon the principle of stimulating rather than superseding thought. A glance at any page will show this. Secondly, It gives results of the latest etymological and critical research. Thirdly, It gives the opinions of some of the best critics on almost all disputed interpretations. Fourthly, It presents the best methods of studying English literature by class-exercises, by essays, and by examinations. (See the Appendix.) We may add that, as in our editions of Macbeth and Hamlet, we have adhered more closely than other editors to the earliest approved texts, deeming it almost sacrilege to substitute our own words wherever a reasonable meaning could fairly be extracted from the old quartos or folios. It is impossible in such a work to escape errors. We shall be very grateful to any one who will kindly point them out to us. Book Shakspere s the Merchant of Venice

Download or read book Shakspere s the Merchant of Venice written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Merchant of Venice is among the expansive assortment of famous works composed by the incomparable English playwright William Shakespeare. Some critics consider this play to be a comedy because it shares certain key aspects with Shakespeare's other romantic comedies; however, it has also been hotly argued that this play is dramatic rather than comedic as evidenced by the many intense and memorable dramatic scenes. Either way, this play is both an enchanting and engaging piece of art that will bring you to laughter and to tears, often in the same scene! With entertaining and inventive characters such as the merchant Antonio and the moneylender Shylock, the reader is instantly enveloped in this play and in a complete world of engaging players and believable scenarios. This play takes on several real world issues such as the negative effects of money lending/borrowing, greed, social classes, and anti-Semitism. For readers who are already familiar with Shakespeare and his writing, this play carries on his legacy of captivating and memorable speeches or soliloquies. The character Shylock and the character Portia, while neither the central protagonist, each have wonderful soliloquies that were beautifully written for the audience to enjoy. The Merchant of Venice stands out as an artistically crafted play written by the world's most prominent playwright, William Shakespeare. For readers familiar with Shakespeare's works, this play is a wonderful addition to the other plays they've already read. For readers not yet familiar with Shakespeare's plays, this work will prove to be a fun and engrossing exploration of life and interpersonal relationships.
