Book excerpt: "The Indians were "quiet" - but Scout Bert Monroe's closest friend, Charlie Pronghorn, had become strangely critical of the whites who had educated him. He was joking of course - he joked all the time - and even if he wasn't, criticism couldn't kill a man. Moreover, the Army believed what everyone knew - that the Indians were untrained, independent, separate groups who had never worked together in a fight. But they had never had anyone to organize them. Only Monroe wondered and warned. He knew Charlie Pronghorn had the education, and the training, and the guts, to fight a mean, intelligent war. All he needed was a reason. And the whites who despised Indians couldn't wait to give him one, while the Army went on believing it could lick any dirty bunch of Injuns. So the tension grew - black and menacing as the gathering tribes in the shadow of the Bighorns"--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Battle of the Little Big Horn, five entire companies of the 7th Cavalry, including their leader, George Armstrong Custer, were lost. For years the shadow of blame for the defeat has been cast upon Custer. What role did his subordinates play in the battle? Did they contribute to the Custer failure, or was he the only one to blame? In Custer's Shadow presents the complex life of Major Marcus Reno, Custer's second-in-command. Employing photographs and maps to help the reader visualize the text, Ronald H. Nichols unravels the controversy surrounding Reno's role in the battle and questions the scrutiny to which he was subjected in the years following.

Book Historic Range of Variability for Upland Vegetation in the Bighorn National Forest Wyoming

Download or read book Historic Range of Variability for Upland Vegetation in the Bighorn National Forest Wyoming written by Carolyn B. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approach for synthesizing the results of ecological research pertinent to land management is the analysis of the historic range of variability (HRV) for key ecosystem variables that are affected by management activities. This report provides an HRV analysis for the upland vegetation of the Bighorn National Forest in northcentral Wyoming. The variables include live tree density, dead tree (snag) density, canopy cover, abundance of coarse woody debris, species diversity, fire return intervals, the abundance of various diseases, the proportion of the landscape in different land cover types, and the degree of patchiness in the landscape. The variables were examined at the stand and landscape scales, using information available in the literature and USFS databases. High-elevation landscapes were considered separately from low-elevation landscapes. Much of the report pertains to forests dominated by lodge-pole pine, subalpine fir, and Engelmann spruce at high elevations, and by ponderosa pine, aspen, and Douglas-fir at lower elevations. We defined the HRV reference period for the BNF as approximately 1600 to 1890.

Book The Battle of the Little Big Horn

Download or read book The Battle of the Little Big Horn written by W.A. Wallace and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-09-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer died at the hands of native Americans by the banks of the Little Big Horn in Montana 25th June 1876. This is an established undisputed fact. What is disputed is the real reason that he died. So forget all you have been indoctrinated to believe and begin to learn the truth. George Custer was an anathema to his superiors, but the populace loved him. If he were to stand for president in the coming elections there was a strong possibility that he would win. Neither William T. Sherman nor ‘Little Phil’ Sheridan could allow that to happen. Thus they conspired to put Custer in a position in the field where the opposing Sioux and Cheyenne were stronger and could deliver the ‘Coup de Gras’. The first of two volumes to deal with the circumstances that arose leading the native Americans on a collision course with the US Army that fateful day and the death of a national hero. Subsequently the conspiracy is uncovered and shows how these men used their powers and positions and so deftly covered their tracks. Perhaps, but not quite. 30 years of diligent research has uncovered the truth in this ground breaking history. Unmissable and shocking, dare you not read this surprising revelation.
