Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel, SHADOWS ARE ASSASSINS is a psychological journey. The more the Novel progresses it becomes from a socio political journey of a man to the discovery of his own psychic reality. The first 42 chapters deal with our epistemological limitations as we suffer in our language, in our relations and in our day to day political aspects of life. But the next 40 chapters actually become a spiritual quest in it's own adventure of romance and love. It is violent also in the sense of mutilation of every kind of self suppressions to reach out to the reality of our desire for the Other. And the remaining 33 chapters actually become a surreal description of transcendence of every border line which human beings fear to cross. Indeed if our deeper and therefore unknown desires emerge from within and truly stand before us, it becomes exactly perceptible how a mysterious battleground of hate and love, love and death seek to destroy us and rebuild us. In the novel SHADOWS ARE ASSASSINS Shyamal Bhattacharjee, the author, makes his readers witness this perilous journey inside the mysterious battlefield human mind. Among the characters presented in the novel, some have their desired childhood and adolescence, some woman with repressed sexual desire, some woman her dead son, some man his dead father, some persons with their repressed homosexuality, some with their homicidal and suicidal tendencies. It is a dangerous shadow fight when different shadows of oneself become opponents in different lights It will not be wrong to mention that the the novel is written with a wonderful poetic language from the beginning to the end. So far it is one of the 7th unpublished novels written by Shyamal Bhattacharjee. The whole novel SHADOWS ARE ASSASSINS is framed with small chapters with a headline that captures the central idea of the next 500 to 600 words. Chapters are kept small keeping in view to its poetic and intellectual intensity. Each chapter can be regarde

Book The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge Volume 9

Download or read book The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge Volume 9 written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coleridge's Aids to Reflection was written at a time when new movements in thought were starting to unsettle belief. It was read with admiration by early Victorians such as John Sterling, F. D. Maurice, and Thomas Arnold, contributing to the formation of the Broad Church Movement, and with respect by members of the High Church Movement, including John Henry Newman. Coleridge had intended simply to produce a selection from the writings of the seventeenth-century Archbishop Robert Leighton with comments of his own, but as he worked at the book he found the commentary expanding to take in the fruits of his religious thinking over the years, so that the second, and more important, part of the volume was totally dominated by his thought. In this, the first major edition of Aids to Reflection, the intricate story of Coleridge's changing conception is unfolded by way of an introduction and detailed notes, the surviving materials for the volume being printed in appendixes. The introduction also traces the subsequent influence of the work in England and America; further appendixes include James Marsh's influential preface to the first American edition, which is reproduced in full. Book The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge Volume 11

Download or read book The Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge Volume 11 written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of 2. Coleridge's Shorter Works and Fragments brings together a number of substantial essays that were not long enough to require volumes to themselves, among them his "Theory of Life," "Essays on the Principles of Genial Criticism," "Treatise on Method," "Confessions of an Inquiring Spirit," "On the Passions," and "On the Prometheus of Aeschylus." To these are added more than four hundred other pieces, some of them fragementary, many of them previously unpublished, ranging in date from school essays of the early 1790s to a discussion of the bullion controversy in 1834. As might be expected, the subject matter includes literature and language, theology, philosophy, politics, and science, but in many less predicatble topics (such as child labor laws, marriage, suicide, church history, the abolition of slavery, the state of the colonies) also appear. By gathering this material and presenting it in chronological order, Shorter Works and Fragments reveals the development and major characteristics of Coleridge's seemingly inexhaustible variety. H.J. Jackson and J.R. de J. Jackson, Professors of English at the University of Toronto, are the editors of Coleridge's Marginalia and Logic, respectively, in the Collected Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Book Grasping Shadows

  • Author : William Chapman Sharpe
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Grasping Shadows written by William Chapman Sharpe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in a shadow? Menace, seduction, or salvation? Immaterial but profound, shadows lurk everywhere in literature and the visual arts, signifying everything from the treachery of appearances to the unfathomable power of God. From Plato to Picasso, from Rembrandt to Welles and Warhol, from Lord of the Rings to the latest video game, shadows act as central players in the drama of Western culture. Yet because they work silently, artistic shadows often slip unnoticed past audiences and critics. Conceived as an accessible introduction to this elusive phenomenon, Grasping Shadows is the first book that offers a general theory of how all shadows function in texts and visual media. Arguing that shadow images take shape within a common cultural field where visual and verbal meanings overlap, William Sharpe ranges widely among classic and modern works, revealing the key motifs that link apparently disparate works such as those by Fra Angelico and James Joyce, Clementina Hawarden and Kara Walker, Charles Dickens and Kumi Yamashita. Showing how real-world shadows have shaped the meanings of shadow imagery, Grasping Shadows guides the reader through the techniques used by writers and artists to represent shadows from the Renaissance onward. The last chapter traces how shadows impact the art of the modern city, from Renoir and Zola to film noir and projection systems that capture the shadows of passers-by on streets around the globe. Extending his analysis to contemporary street art, popular songs, billboards, and shadow-theatre, Sharpe demonstrates a practical way to grasp the "dark side" that looms all around us.
