Book excerpt: Shades of Faith: Minority Voices in Paganism is an anthology that encompasses the voices and experiences of minorities within the Pagan community and addresses some of the challenges, stereotyping, frustrations, talents, history and beauties of being different within the racial constructs of typical Pagan or Wiccan groups.Often the associations of the roots of Paganism have pushed assumptions that worshippers of Paganism are strictly Caucasian. The mainstreaming of Wicca has elevated images of worship and deity that connect with Celtic, Greek or Roman cultures. There are a lot of minority races that are practicing Pagans and are often having a myriad of experiences that are fashioned by the reality of walking between the worlds of their birth ancestry or culture and that of their spiritual culture. This anthology is an opportunity to share their stories and experiences with others around being the minorities within a minority spiritual community. Some of the practitioners in this anthology practice paths that include (but are not limited to) Wicca, Voodoo, Umbanda, Shaman, Native and other Pagan paths.Join us in celebrating the incredible diversity and beauty that encompass the harmony that has created the song of the Pagan community. The previously unheard voices of our community are now sharing the power of experience through the written word and through their voices.

Book Shades of White Flight

Download or read book Shades of White Flight written by Mark T. Mulder and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, historians have analyzed a phenomenon of “white flight” plaguing the urban areas of the northern United States. One of the most interesting cases of “white flight” occurred in the Chicago neighborhoods of Englewood and Roseland, where seven entire church congregations from one denomination, the Christian Reformed Church, left the city in the 1960s and 1970s and relocated their churches to nearby suburbs. In Shades of White Flight, sociologist Mark T. Mulder investigates the migration of these Chicago church members, revealing how these churches not only failed to inhibit white flight, but actually facilitated the congregations’ departure. Using a wealth of both archival and interview data, Mulder sheds light on the forces that shaped these midwestern neighborhoods and shows that, surprisingly, evangelical religion fostered both segregation as well as the decline of urban stability. Indeed, the Roseland and Englewood stories show how religion—often used to foster community and social connectedness—can sometimes help to disintegrate neighborhoods. Mulder describes how the Dutch CRC formed an insular social circle that focused on the local church and Christian school—instead of the local park or square or market—as the center point of the community. Rather than embrace the larger community, the CRC subculture sheltered themselves and their families within these two places. Thus it became relatively easy—when black families moved into the neighborhood—to sell the church and school and relocate in the suburbs. This is especially true because, in these congregations, authority rested at the local church level and in fact they owned the buildings themselves. Revealing how a dominant form of evangelical church polity—congregationalism—functioned within the larger phenomenon of white flight, Shades of White Flight lends new insights into the role of religion and how it can affect social change, not always for the better.

Book Shades of Difference

  • Author : Sujata Iyengar
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2013-04-12
  • ISBN : 0812202333
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Shades of Difference written by Sujata Iyengar and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was there such a thing as a modern notion of race in the English Renaissance, and, if so, was skin color its necessary marker? In fact, early modern texts described human beings of various national origins—including English—as turning white, brown, tawny, black, green, or red for any number of reasons, from the effects of the sun's rays or imbalance of the bodily humors to sexual desire or the application of makeup. It is in this cultural environment that the seventeenth-century London Gazette used the term "black" to describe both dark-skinned African runaways and dark-haired Britons, such as Scots, who are now unquestioningly conceived of as "white." In Shades of Difference, Sujata Iyengar explores the cultural mythologies of skin color in a period during which colonial expansion and the slave trade introduced Britons to more dark-skinned persons than at any other time in their history. Looking to texts as divergent as sixteenth-century Elizabethan erotic verse, seventeenth-century lyrics, and Restoration prose romances, Iyengar considers the construction of race during the early modern period without oversimplifying the emergence of race as a color-coded classification or a black/white opposition. Rather, "race," embodiment, and skin color are examined in their multiple contexts—historical, geographical, and literary. Iyengar engages works that have not previously been incorporated into discussions of the formation of race, such as Marlowe's "Hero and Leander" and Shakespeare's "Venus and Adonis." By rethinking the emerging early modern connections between the notions of race, skin color, and gender, Shades of Difference furthers an ongoing discussion with originality and impeccable scholarship.

Book Shades of Truth

Download or read book Shades of Truth written by Naomi Kinsman and published by Zonderkidz. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sadie is a strong, extroverted 12-year-old who sees the move from Menlo Park, CA to Eagle’s Nest, MI as a grand adventure. In this new place, she can be whoever she wants to be. She has a strong relationship with her fun-loving dad, and together they work hard to help her mom, who is emotionally fragile. They both hope that this new place will be a fresh start for Sadie’s mom. Quickly Sadie learns she is not welcome in Eagle’s Nest. Her father, a mediator called in by the DNR, is tasked with creating compromise between the hunters in the community who think the bears are a nuisance and should be shot, and the scientist who is studying the bears. Sadie has never been on the outside and isn’t sure what to do with the hostile treatment from many of the kids at school. She connects with one girl at school, which helps, and also starts to befriend the (good-looking) son of the scientist. Sadie also meets a local artist, who recognizes Sadie’s talent and offers her art lessons. As Sadie learns to draw, she starts to see her community in a new way. Her art teacher takes her to Compline (evening prayers) and Sadie is drawn in by the mystery of it all. She starts asking questions about what she believes, both in terms of faith, and in terms of the issues in her community. When her father doesn’t stand up to the hunters in the way she thinks he should, she questions his values. The focus of this first book is on Sadie stumbling into questions of faith, wrestling with them, and becoming more comfortable in the space of not knowing all the answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not part of the 50 Shades of Gray series but is a Bible-based response and devotional book from a Christian perspective. E.L. James trilogy 50 Shades of Gray has sold over 40 million copies. And though wildly popular with Christian readers, the content of the book can be damaging to our view of sex and our relationship with God. This book is not anti-sex. Let's be honest. Sex is good. Sometimes it's even great. It feels good and is the most intimate and expressive way of connecting between a man and a woman. But because it is also one of the least talked about subjects in church, we can view it as a subject that isn't relevant to God or our faith. This book is a Christian response to the best-selling 50 Shades of Grey in an easy to read, 50 day devotional format. These Bible-based readings will help you delve more deeply into what God's Word says about sex, our lives, and our faith in God.
