Download or read book SGaan Kinghlas Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area Species Inventory written by Maeva Gauthier and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bowie Seamount or SGaan Kinghlas (the traditional Haida First Nation name) is an isolated biodiversity hotspot located within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) waters of Canada in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. In 2008, Bowie seamount was protected in the SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area (SK-B MPA) under Canada's Oceans Act. In order to characterize the biodiversity of Bowie Seamount, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) led three expeditions (DFO Science Cruise Number PAC 2000-031, PAC 2011-062, PAC 2015-048) to survey the benthic communities. In total, 49 taxa in the phylum Chordata were observed in the SK-B MPA using the visual surveys. Here we provide a complete list of species observed on the three surveys, and documented in previous reports. We document each record with photographs, whether the species has been previously observed at SK-B MPA, the surveys and depth range the observations were made from, and additional notes. Two companion reports document the invertebrate and algae species observed in the SK-B MPA"--Abstract, p. iii.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bowie Seamount, which has a minimum depth of 24 m and is located approximately 175 km west of Haida Gwaii, is the shallowest and best-known seamount in Canada's Pacific Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Initial research on the biology of Bowie Seamount, coupled with interest from the Haida Nation, led to Bowie Seamount and the adjacent Hodgkins and Davidson (also called Pierce or Peirce) Seamounts being designated in 2008 as the SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Marine Protected Area (SK-B MPA), which is co-managed by the Government of Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation. In 2015, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) led a research survey (PAC 2015-48) to study the biology and oceanography of SK-B MPA. This report describes the collection of benthic imagery, plankton samples, hydro-acoustic data, CTD data, water samples, and seabird and marine mammal observations"--Introd., p. 1.

Book Development of Risk based Indicators for the SGaan Kinghlas Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area

Download or read book Development of Risk based Indicators for the SGaan Kinghlas Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Science was asked to recommend scientifically defensible indicators to monitor the achievement of the SGaan Kinghlas-Bowie Seamount Marine Protected Area (SK-B MPA) conservation objective. In response, a framework was developed to select and prioritize ecological risk-based indicators based on the outputs of an ecological risk assessment conducted on the SK-B MPA. Risk-based indicators are a novel approach to selecting indicators to monitor the risk of harm to Significant Ecosystem Components (SECs) from anthropogenic activities and associated stressors. Measures of abundance were commonly proposed across all indicator suites, highlighting the need to establish baselines of information as a priority. Both current snapshot and potential stressor indicator suites should be considered when developing monitoring strategies and plans, using a combination of SEC, stressor, and SEC-stressor interaction indicators. Due to the remote access and associated cost of monitoring indicators at the SK-B MPA, many of the suggested indicators may be measured using visual surveys and, due to the overlapping distribution of several SECs, multiple indicators may be measured or sampled during the same operations period. As data are collected through the monitoring of indicators, this information may be fed back into the adaptive management framework for future iterations of risk assessments, evaluation of selected indicators, selection of new indicators, and the refinement of monitoring plans.

Book Securitizing Marine Protected Areas

Download or read book Securitizing Marine Protected Areas written by Elizabeth M. De Santo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a novel examination of Marine Protected Areas within a security context, bridging science, policy, and geopolitics, and addressing the often-under-emphasized aspect of environmental justice. The book argues that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are not only a critical tool for protecting marine biodiversity in a changing climate, but they also play an important role at the intersection of geopolitics and environmental justice, and they provide a case study of environmental governance at the science-policy interface. The book takes an interdisciplinary and critical approach and builds on the author's two decades of experience working in this field. Geopolitically, it explores the ways in which MPAs provide footprints for influence and access to resources far from home for nations with overseas territories. MPAs also raise important issues connected to equity, environmental justice, and social justice, including access to resources and participation in environmental decision-making processes, key aspects for achieving long-term conservation goals. The book also demonstrates how MPAs are a critical lens for understanding how policy makers cope with scientific uncertainty, and the necessity of well-designed and precautionary science advisory processes. While the ecological contribution of MPAs is paramount, social issues and geopolitical considerations are often less obvious in the discourse underpinning MPAs, and the resulting tensions can undermine long-term conservation objectives. By applying the three lenses of geopolitics, environmental justice and science, this book provides key insights to help the international community moving past the 2030 biodiversity targets and beyond, towards a future of meaningful, equitable, and effective conservation approaches. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of biodiversity conservation, marine studies, political geography, environmental governance, and science-policy studies. It will also be of interest to marine conservation governance professionals and policymakers.

Book Protecting the Coast and Ocean

Download or read book Protecting the Coast and Ocean written by Stephanie M. Hewson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish were once so abundant in BC waters that Indigenous elders recall dried salmon being stacked like firewood. But declines on the coast have accelerated over the last century, with marine wildlife cut in half in just four decades. Protecting the Coast and Ocean explores how we can reverse this decline. This meticulous work analyzes and compares the range of Canadian and international legal tools available, providing in-depth case studies to illustrate how each instrument can work in practice. Despite climate change, overfishing, and pollution, this is a convincing demonstration to address species extinction and plan for a resilient ocean.

Book Trap Camera Videos from SGaan Kinghlas Bowie Seamount

Download or read book Trap Camera Videos from SGaan Kinghlas Bowie Seamount written by Maeva Gauthier and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since 1985, Sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) fishery in British Columbia has occurred at SGaan Kinghlas - Bowie (SK-B) Seamount. Conical traps are used with a bottom diameter of 54-58" and are attached to bottom longlines that are anchored, typically a set will comprise 40-80 traps. The SK-B Seamount Marine Protected Area (MPA) was established in 2008 around three seamounts: Hodgkins, Davidson and Bowie (SGaan Kinghlas). To manage commercial fishing activities, the SK-B MPA was separated into three zones. Zone 1 (SK-B seamount down to 457 m) and Zone 3 (Hodgkins and Davidson seamounts) are closed to fishing, while zone 2 is open for Sablefish longline trap fishery deeper than 457 m on SK-B Seamount. A joint research project between DFO, Simon Fraser University, and Wild Canadian Sablefish Ltd. has been carried out since 2012 to capture deep-sea videos from the Sablefish longline trap fishery. This data report gives an overview of the video annotation of the habitat (substrate), impacts detected, soft corals (Alcyonacea, Antipatharia and Pennatulacea Orders; Stylasteridae Family) and sponges (Demospongiae and Hexactinellida Classes) observed from the SK-B fishing trip in May and June 2016"--Background, p. 4.

Book excerpt: Providing a guide for marine conservation practice, Marine Conservation takes a whole-systems approach, covering major advances in marine ecosystem understanding. Its premise is that conservation must be informed by the natural histories of organisms together with the hierarchy of scale-related linkages and ecosystem processes. The authors introduce a broad range of overlapping issues and the conservation mechanisms that have been devised to achieve marine conservation goals. The book provides students and conservation practitioners with a framework for thoughtful, critical thinking in order to incite innovation in the 21st century. "Marine Conservation presents a scholarly but eminently readable case for the necessity of a systems approach to conserving the oceans, combining superb introductions to the science, law and policy frameworks with carefully chosen case studies. This superb volume is a must for anyone interested in marine conservation, from students and practitioners to lay readers and policy-makers." —Simon Levin, George M. Moffett Professor of Biology, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University
