  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Lovemaps written by John Money and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "lovemap" was first used by Dr. John Money in lectures at Johns Hopkins University in 1980 to symbolize "the neutral template expressed in every individual''s sexuoerotic fantasies and practices." The word connotes our often subconscious pattern of erotic yearnings and desire. Each of us has a distinctive lovemap, as different and individual as a fingerprint. In this book, Dr. Money outlines healthy lovemap development as well as lovemap pathology - lovemaps gone awry. Such pathology falls into three categories: hypophilia (sexual dysfunction, such as impotence), hyperphilia (erotomania), and paraphilia (perversions). Paraphilia, another term coined by Money (from the Latin para - away from what is expected, and philia - love) can range from "those that are playful and harmless to those that are bizarre and deadly."Presenting case histories, Lovemaps describes the sexual practices of several patients and subsequent treatments of their paraphilias. Money pioneered the application of the hormone MPA, or Depo-Provera, to treat repeat sex criminals. He believes he has proved that science can prevent paraphilic sex offending, as is the case for other, physiological diseases.Lovemaps and its stirring accounts of lovemap pathology in case histories, (which are indexed under "paraphilia"), can be invaluable tools for those in the fields of sexology, child psychology, clinical psychology, criminology and, with its comprehensive glossary, the general reader - in short, anyone interested in human sexual development.

Download or read book The Concept of Woman v3 written by Allen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of a lifetime's scholarly work, this pioneering study by Sister Prudence Allen traces the concept of woman in relation to man in Western thought from ancient times to the present. Volume I uncovers four general categories of questions asked by philosophers for two thousand years. These are the categories of opposites, of generation, of wisdom, and of virtue. Sister Prudence Allen traces several recurring strands of sexual and gender identity within this period. Ultimately, she shows the paradoxical influence of Aristotle on the question of woman and on a philosophical understanding of sexual coomplemenarity. Supplemented throughout with helpful charts, diagrams, and illustrations, this volume will be an important resource for scholars and students in the fields of women's studies, philosophy, history, theology, literary studies, and political science. In Volume 2, Sister Prudence Allen explores claims about sex and gender identity in the works of over fifty philosophers (both men and women) in the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. Touching on the thought of every philosopher who considered sex or gender identity between A.D. 1250 and 1500, The Concept of Woman provides the analytical categories necessary for situating contemporary discussion of women in relation to men. Adding to the accessibility of this fine discussion are informative illustrations, helpful summary charts, and extracts of original source material (some not previously available in English). In her third and final volume Allen covers the years 1500--2015, continuing her chronological approach to individual authors and also offering systematic arguments to defend certain philosophical positions over against others.

Book Sex and Gender

Download or read book Sex and Gender written by H. T. Wilson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1989 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how different a focus on gender is from one on sex, whether in scholarly thinking, professional activity or public policy-making. It indicates how incorrect contemporary renditions of the difference between them is, provides an explanation of this tension and difference based on the critical analysis of key institutions, and shows the serious consequences of this confusion for women in particular across a wide range of institutional processes and practices in North America and Western Europe. This confusion out of the failure to understand adequately the historical origins of sex as a civil designation in a political economy and in state taxation and census concerns, and the corollary determination of spokesmen for the emerging capitalist and industrial nation state to extirpate the last vestiges of gender, given its tie to a pre-industrial kinship system found in towns and local communities. This is a forcefully written study which integrates material from a vast range of disciplines and professional practices. It also seeks to integrate salient work in women's and feminist studies into a critique of key institutions and practices if advacned industrial societies. it uses critical theory and makes this available to students and practitioners, as well as scholars and academics.

This volume offers vivid accounts of the diversity of living transgender in today's world. Rather than simply reflecting social change, these shifts work to actively construct contemporary identities. The second section, "Trans Governance," examines how law and social policy have responded to contemporary gender shifts. The third section, "Transforming Identity," explores gender and sexual identity practices within cultural and subcultural spaces. The final section, "Transforming Theory?", offers a theoretical reflection on the increasing visibility of trans people in today’s society and traces the challenges and the contributions transgender theory has brought to gender theory, queer theory and sociological approaches to identity and citizenship.
