Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring one of the most controversial topics in contemporary theology, this scholarly volume reveals what the world's great faiths—East and West—preach about sexuality, with a special emphasis on American religion. What do the world's most important religious texts have to say about one of humanity's favorite activities? Editors David W. Machacek and Melissa M. Wilcox have brought together top scholars in the field of religious studies to ask and answer these critical questions. Carefully researched, elegantly written, and respectfully presented, Sexuality and the World's Religions explores the intersection of the spiritual and the carnal in Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and African and Native American spiritual traditions. A separate section explores critical religious and sexual topics in American society, including the role of spirituality in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities; the role of sex in the modern witchcraft community; and the ever thorny problem of religion and sexual liberty. Reconciling sexuality and spirituality in every human soul is one of religion's most important tasks. Book excerpt: Sex and Religion: Unveiling the Interplay of Desire and Faith "Sex and Religion: Unveiling the Interplay of Desire and Faith" is a groundbreaking exploration of the complex and often contentious relationship between human sexuality and religious beliefs. Written by acclaimed sociologist G. BOSTON, this thought-provoking book delves into the ways different faith traditions perceive, regulate, and celebrate sexual expression. In "Sex and Religion," G. BOSTON embarks on an ambitious journey across time and cultures, revealing how sexual norms and religious doctrines have influenced and shaped each other. Through meticulous research and insightful analysis, she sheds light on the diverse ways religions approach issues such as marriage, celibacy, gender roles, and sexual morality. The book begins with an introduction to the historical context, tracing the origins of sexual ethics in major world religions including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and indigenous spiritual practices. G. BOSTON examines sacred texts, theological writings, and historical events to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of how ancient beliefs continue to impact contemporary attitudes towards sex. Each chapter of "Sex and Religion" focuses on a different aspect of the relationship between sexuality and faith. From the celibate lives of monks and nuns to the celebration of sexual union in tantric practices, G. BOSTON explores the wide spectrum of religious perspectives on sex. She also addresses modern-day controversies such as LGBTQ+ rights, contraception, and reproductive health, analyzing how religious institutions and communities navigate these issues in an ever-changing world. A particularly compelling section of the book is dedicated to personal narratives and case studies. G. BOSTON shares the stories of individuals who have struggled to reconcile their sexual identities with their religious beliefs, offering a deeply human perspective on the often-painful intersections of faith and desire. These personal accounts are poignant and powerful, providing readers with a glimpse into the real-life implications of theological doctrines. "Sex and Religion" also examines the role of religious leaders and institutions in shaping sexual norms. G. BOSTON discusses the influence of religious teachings on laws and policies, exploring how faith-based advocacy has both restricted and expanded sexual freedoms throughout history. She provides a balanced view, highlighting both the liberating and oppressive potentials of religious sexual ethics. In her conclusion, G. BOSTON offers reflections on the future of sex and religion, considering the potential for interfaith dialogue and progressive reform. She encourages readers to engage in open, respectful conversations about sex and spirituality, fostering a more inclusive and understanding world. "Sex and Religion: Unveiling the Interplay of Desire and Faith" is an essential read for anyone interested in the intricate dance between sexuality and spirituality. G. BOSTON eloquent prose, rigorous scholarship, and empathetic approach make this book a valuable resource for scholars, religious practitioners, and anyone seeking to understand the profound connections between what we believe and how we love. Embark on a journey through the intertwining paths of sex and religion with this enlightening and transformative book, and discover how these fundamental aspects of human experience can coexist, clash, and ultimately enrich each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rome was at its height, an emperor’s male beloved, victim of an untimely death, would be worshipped around the empire as a god. In this same society, the routine sexual exploitation of poor and enslaved women was abetted by public institutions. Four centuries later, a Roman emperor commanded the mutilation of men caught in same-sex affairs, even as he affirmed the moral dignity of women without any civic claim to honor. The gradual transformation of the Roman world from polytheistic to Christian marks one of the most sweeping ideological changes of premodern history. At the center of it all was sex. Exploring sources in literature, philosophy, and art, Kyle Harper examines the rise of Christianity as a turning point in the history of sexuality and helps us see how the roots of modern sexuality are grounded in an ancient religious revolution. While Roman sexual culture was frankly and freely erotic, it was not completely unmoored from constraint. Offending against sexual morality was cause for shame, experienced through social condemnation. The rise of Christianity fundamentally changed the ethics of sexual behavior. In matters of morality, divine judgment transcended that of mere mortals, and shame—a social concept—gave way to the theological notion of sin. This transformed understanding led to Christianity’s explicit prohibitions of homosexuality, extramarital love, and prostitution. Most profound, however, was the emergence of the idea of free will in Christian dogma, which made all human action, including sexual behavior, accountable to the spiritual, not the physical, world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Bed of Heaven is a work of Christian ethics that examines how eschatology might reshape concepts of sexual morality. With the rise of institutional Christianity in the Roman Empire, Christian attitudes about sexual desire and activity were soon controlled by doctrines of virginity and celibacy, or, monogamous marriage for the sake of procreation. These moral theologies aligned with a certain track of Christian eschatology, which imagined the future resurrection of the body, but without any corresponding sexual desires. As a result, traditional Christianity developed a preference for celibacy on earth to match the loss of sexual desire and activity in heaven, making marriage and monogamy temporal goods only. In recent years, a few scholars of religion have challenged whether this vision of a sexless heaven is valid. However, they have not fully developed a vision of sex in heaven that might function to critique and reform Christian sexual ethics on earth. Richard W. McCarty explores scripture, church teachings, and different models of eschatology to offer a bold new conception of Christian sexual ethics that is inclusive of LGBTQ and heterosexual people, both in and outside of monogamous configurations.

Book Sexual Morality in a Christless World

Download or read book Sexual Morality in a Christless World written by Matthew Rueger and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like in St. Paul's day, the Church around the world-and particularly in the United States-now frequently faces hostility at the first mention of homosexuality in casual conversations or public-square debates. Author Matthew Rueger openly embraces this hot topic, giving you a framework for defending your beliefs by first exploring the relationship between sexual sin in ancient history and twenty-first-century tangles of the same flavor. Topics such as temptation, promiscuity, marriage, homosexuality, natural law, and the church's role in it all then swirl together to reveal our unifying need for a Savior. Rueger writes compassionately with a father's heart and adamantly with a determination to outline the truth about sexual morality from a reasoned Christian perspective. We need to expect the unpleasant from our opponents, arm ourselves with answers to common objections, and speak in clarity and love. And let's not lose sight of the church as a place of refuge for those who are battered down by their desires. Real people with real struggles are being lost. Find Your Voice. Book jacket.

Book Sexuality Gender And Religion In Contemporary Discourses

Download or read book Sexuality Gender And Religion In Contemporary Discourses written by Fahimah Ulfat and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most current issues occupying both public and academic discourse is sexuality and the related issues of sexual self-determination, gender order, and homophobia. Religion has a significant role to play in this discourse. This centrality of religion is evident not only in the question of moral concepts, but also in questions of the understanding of the body and gender. In this context, it should be emphasized that religion - or, more precisely, a particular interpretation of the religious - can have both a conflict-promoting and an emancipatory effect. If one wants to conceptualize a contemporary theological understanding, then it is necessary to receive medical, psychological as well as social and cultural science research. The anthology aims to thematize these debates and to broaden the view for the multi-layered processes of change taking place in the discourses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal customs have become the norm for most young adults in matters of sexual intimacy. Unfortunately, the sexual revolution has not proven to be as beneficial to women as was hoped, and society offers young men little preparation for future roles as husbands and fathers. In this book, Father Piderit argues that a natural law approach to morality provides a grounded pathway toward marriage, and shows why these fairly traditional practices help young people find a partner whom they can realistically promise to love until death do them part. Offering theory but focusing on practice, this book helps young adults understand why sexual intimacy should be reserved for marriage. The first two sections develop the natural law basis for behavior. Father Piderit points out that natural law relies primarily on reason, not religion, and his explanation provides a way to understand a Christian approach to morality as grounded in nature. The final third of the book explores what religious practice and membership in a Christian denomination adds to the natural law approach. Father Piderit uses clear, practical examples to show that positive goals are what motivate human beings. By breaking down the potentially abstract concept of morality into a set of intuitive practices guided by natural law, Father Piderit provides young people and students with the tools to create a positive courtship and, ultimately, a solid marriage based on strong, shared values and mutual respect.

Download or read book Religion and Sexual Health written by R.M. Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious beliefs and attitudes have long been recognized as playing an important role in sexual functioning, but the relationship between religion and sexual behavior has rarely been studied in a comprehensive way. The essays in this volume bring the views of sex counsellors, therapists. theologians, and bioethicists to bear on the relationship between religion and sexuality. A major theme emerging from these essays is that religion and counselling need to learn from one another. Religious traditions, at the popular or theological levels, are often marked by ignorance and misinformation about sexuality and can benefit by the insights of those who work closely with patients in medical and counselling settings. Counsellors, in turn, need to develop a sensitivity to past and present religious attitudes toward sexuality in order to assist their patients achieve sexual health.
