Book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Beliefs Among Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives Who Work with Adolescents in Non acute Care Settings

Download or read book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Beliefs Among Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives Who Work with Adolescents in Non acute Care Settings written by Julia Irene Minoia and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents frequently experience perceived and actual barriers to sexual and reproductive healthcare related to confidentiality, access, and their relationship with healthcare providers. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are well positioned to work with adolescents in a variety of non-acute care settings to provide preventative sexual healthcare services. No studies have recorded Nurse Practitioners' (NPs) and Certified Nurse Midwives'/Certified Midwives' (CNMs/CMs) adolescent sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were any differences between Women's Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNPs) and CNMs/CMs whose educational programs have a concentration in sexuality, and APRNs from other specialties (ANPs, FNPs, PNPs, and PMHNPs) regarding knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs toward adolescents' sexual health. The study used a cross-sectional, descriptive comparative design. A convenience sample was recruited through the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) and the Nurse Practitioner Association- New York State (NPA) e-newsletters and surveyed online with The Sex Knowledge Attitude Test (SKAT), the Sexuality Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (SABS), and the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS) to assess sexual health knowledge, sexuality attitudes, beliefs about addressing adolescent's sexual health, and personal experience of sexual violence. One open ended question elicited responses of qualitative data. Demographic data of participants (n = 204) were analysed and 171 participants finished the online survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis shows that the WHNP/CNM/CM group have significantly more positive beliefs about addressing adolescents' sexual health than the Other NPs group, [beta] = -3.36, p = .003. Chi-square of attitude scores by region of the U.S. show that positive attitudes toward adolescent sexuality vary significantly with the South showing the least positive attitude scores (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care delivery refers to the multiple layers of the health care system that interact to affect outcomes for patients with cancer and the quality of that care. The factors included in the care delivery system that potentially alter outcomes include social dynamics, financing systems, organizational structures and processes, health technologies, provider and individual behaviors. Because women’s health care has its own unique challenges, the intersection between cancer care delivery and women’s health is to be examined in this Frontiers in Oncology issue. The unique opportunities and challenges of improving the health care system for women with breast and gynecologic cancers are to be explored in depth. We will visit many topics of cancer care delivery with the unique perspective geared towards the care of women’s malignancies.

Book Let s Talk about Sex

Download or read book Let s Talk about Sex written by Amio Mokatagaloa Matenga-Ikihele and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to investigate the perceptions of sexual health among adolescent Niuean females who were born in New Zealand. The main objectives were to explore sources of sexual health education and information among participants and to identify the barriers or gaps that prevent young Niuean women from accessing appropriate sexual health education, information, treatment and health services. Twenty participants were interviewed for this qualitative study. Participants needed to be female, of Niuean descent, New Zealand born, aged between 16-24 years and living in Auckland. Each individual was interviewed face to face using a semi structured approach. Data was analysed using a general inductive approach. The emerging themes which related to the research objectives were categorised into a framework which provided an underlying structure of the experiences from participants. Key themes explored were first sexual experience, sexual health activity, sexually transmitted infections, contraception, pregnancy and sexual health services. This study also explored where and what type of sexual health education or information participants had received and whether this had an impact on their sexual health behaviour. The study findings raised concerns around the lack of knowledge participants had towards contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted infections and sexual health services. There was a high number of unplanned teenage pregnancies among the young women. The lack of knowledge around the most common sexually transmitted infection Chlamydia was particularly evident, with knowledge only being present among those who had a history of acquiring this infection. The young women were also unaware of sexual health services available. A key finding of this study highlighted the important role Niuean women have, with mothers and sisters commonly identified as key educators in the transmission of sexual health information. Health professionals that were not Niuean and not their regular practitioner were also emphasised as important individuals participants would access for sexual health information. Health professionals were regarded as knowledgeable in sexual health information and topics, which was essential for participants as they wanted to be informed with accurate information which some felt was compromised if friends or family members were used. There is a clear preference for young Niuean women to use services that did not consist of Niuean health workers. This highlights a need for current health care professionals and health care services to be opportunistic and open to sexual health discussions with New Zealand born Niuean adolescent females.

This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.

Book Relationships Between Adolescents Sexual and Reproductive Health Knowledge Attitudes and Beliefs and Intimate Partner Violence in Young Adulthood

Download or read book Relationships Between Adolescents Sexual and Reproductive Health Knowledge Attitudes and Beliefs and Intimate Partner Violence in Young Adulthood written by Natasha Camhi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs (KAB) have been amply studied, most research on the topic focuses on examining contraceptive use and the risk of unintended pregnancy. Relatively little is known about the relationship between adolescents’ SRH awareness and young adult health and well-being outcomes, such as the perpetration and victimization of intimate partner violence (IPV). IPV represents a major public health crisis in the United States: Approximately one-third of both women and men report having experienced some type of violence at the hands of an intimate partner in their lifetime. I examine the relationship between adolescents’ SRH KAB and intimate partner violence using data from two waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Add Health, which follows a nationally representative sample of individuals over more than a decade (1994–2008), is the largest and most comprehensive longitudinal survey of adolescents to date, and contains detailed information on the sexual and romantic experiences of adolescents and young adults. My study incorporates four key explanatory variables from Wave I—a reproductive and contraceptive knowledge score, a contraceptive attitudes index, a contraceptive confidence index, and a self-efficacy index—which were built using factor analysis. It also includes two dichotomous dependent variables—IPV perpetration and victimization—from Wave III. Multivariate logistic regression analyses reveal similar associations between sociodemographic variables and both IPV measures: Women are much more likely to experience both outcomes, while women who are older at sexual debut or who have high educational attainment are significantly less likely to experience either outcome than their respective counterparts. Surprisingly, adolescents with greater and more accurate SRH knowledge are more likely than those with less knowledge to later become victims of IPV, though knowledge has no bearing on the likelihood of perpetration. Notably, holding more favorable attitudes toward contraception as an adolescent is unambiguously related to a decreased likelihood of experiencing IPV perpetration or victimization as a young adult. These results demonstrate that while knowledge is important, attitudes developed during adolescence are moderately strong correlates of experiencing IPV in young adulthood, providing evidence in support of sexuality education programs that target SRH attitudes and incorporate violence prevention, healthy relationship, and conflict resolution modules.

Book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2

Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Book Understanding the Well Being of LGBTQI Populations

Download or read book Understanding the Well Being of LGBTQI Populations written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in prevalence and visibility of sexually gender diverse (SGD) populations illuminates the need for greater understanding of the ways in which current laws, systems, and programs affect their well-being. Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, or intersex, as well as those who express same-sex or -gender attractions or behaviors, will have experiences across their life course that differ from those of cisgender and heterosexual individuals. Characteristics such as age, race and ethnicity, and geographic location intersect to play a distinct role in the challenges and opportunities SGD people face. Understanding the Well-Being of LGBTQI+ Populations reviews the available evidence and identifies future research needs related to the well-being of SDG populations across the life course. This report focuses on eight domains of well-being; the effects of various laws and the legal system on SGD populations; the effects of various public policies and structural stigma; community and civic engagement; families and social relationships; education, including school climate and level of attainment; economic experiences (e.g., employment, compensation, and housing); physical and mental health; and health care access and gender-affirming interventions. The recommendations of Understanding the Well-Being of LGBTQI+ Populations aim to identify opportunities to advance understanding of how individuals experience sexuality and gender and how sexual orientation, gender identity, and intersex status affect SGD people over the life course.

Book Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Against Women

Download or read book Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Against Women written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2013 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A health-care provider is likely to be the first professional contact for survivors of intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Evidence suggests that women who have been subjected to violence seek health care more often than non-abused women, even if they do not disclose the associated violence. They also identify health-care providers as the professionals they would most trust with disclosure of abuse. These guidelines are an unprecedented effort to equip healthcare providers with evidence-based guidance as to how to respond to intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. They also provide advice for policy makers, encouraging better coordination and funding of services, and greater attention to responding to sexual violence and partner violence within training programmes for health care providers. The guidelines are based on systematic reviews of the evidence, and cover: 1. identification and clinical care for intimate partner violence 2. clinical care for sexual assault 3. training relating to intimate partner violence and sexual assault against women 4. policy and programmatic approaches to delivering services 5. mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence. The guidelines aim to raise awareness of violence against women among health-care providers and policy-makers, so that they better understand the need for an appropriate health-sector response. They provide standards that can form the basis for national guidelines, and for integrating these issues into health-care provider education.

This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are the foundation of the United States, and supporting them is a key component of building a successful future. However, millions of children face health inequities that compromise their development, well-being, and long-term outcomes, despite substantial scientific evidence about how those adversities contribute to poor health. Advancements in neurobiological and socio-behavioral science show that critical biological systems develop in the prenatal through early childhood periods, and neurobiological development is extremely responsive to environmental influences during these stages. Consequently, social, economic, cultural, and environmental factors significantly affect a child's health ecosystem and ability to thrive throughout adulthood. Vibrant and Healthy Kids: Aligning Science, Practice, and Policy to Advance Health Equity builds upon and updates research from Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity (2017) and From Neurons to Neighborhoods: The Science of Early Childhood Development (2000). This report provides a brief overview of stressors that affect childhood development and health, a framework for applying current brain and development science to the real world, a roadmap for implementing tailored interventions, and recommendations about improving systems to better align with our understanding of the significant impact of health equity.
