Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts estimate that nearly 60 percent of all U.S. pregnancies--and 81 percent of pregnancies among adolescents--are unintended. Yet the topic of preventing these unintended pregnancies has long been treated gingerly because of personal sensitivities and public controversies, especially the angry debate over abortion. Additionally, child welfare advocates long have overlooked the connection between pregnancy planning and the improved well-being of families and communities that results when children are wanted. Now, current issues--health care and welfare reform, and the new international focus on population--are drawing attention to the consequences of unintended pregnancy. In this climate The Best Intentions offers a timely exploration of family planning issues from a distinguished panel of experts. This committee sheds much-needed light on the questions and controversies surrounding unintended pregnancy. The book offers specific recommendations to put the United States on par with other developed nations in terms of contraceptive attitudes and policies, and it considers the effectiveness of over 20 pregnancy prevention programs. The Best Intentions explores problematic definitions--"unintended" versus "unwanted" versus "mistimed"--and presents data on pregnancy rates and trends. The book also summarizes the health and social consequences of unintended pregnancies, for both men and women, and for the children they bear. Why does unintended pregnancy occur? In discussions of "reasons behind the rates," the book examines Americans' ambivalence about sexuality and the many other social, cultural, religious, and economic factors that affect our approach to contraception. The committee explores the complicated web of peer pressure, life aspirations, and notions of romance that shape an individual's decisions about sex, contraception, and pregnancy. And the book looks at such practical issues as the attitudes of doctors toward birth control and the place of contraception in both health insurance and "managed care." The Best Intentions offers frank discussion, synthesis of data, and policy recommendations on one of today's most sensitive social topics. This book will be important to policymakers, health and social service personnel, foundation executives, opinion leaders, researchers, and concerned individuals. May

It provides a systematic assessment of the impact of various programmatic approaches, both preventive and ameliorative, in light of the growing scientific understanding of the topic.

Download or read book Contraceptive Use Among Female University Students in Tanzania written by Magreat Somba and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite of the government effort in advocating the use of family planning information and service to all male and females of reproductive ages, university students sexual activity is on the rise. Most of the girls are at the greatest risk of unwanted pregnancy and sexual transmitted infections because they are unlikely to use contraception during or immediately after sexual activity. This was a cross sectional cmparative study carried out to examine the use of contraception among female university students in Tanzania. The findings revealed that the knowledge about contraception was sound but the use is very low. Book An Examination of Emergency Contraception Use by Undergraduate College Students in the Midwest Using the Integrated Behavioral Model

Download or read book An Examination of Emergency Contraception Use by Undergraduate College Students in the Midwest Using the Integrated Behavioral Model written by Jennifer J. Wohlwend and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence undergraduate college student use of emergency contraception as well as their level of knowledge and prevalence of using EC. Understanding the factors that influence college student use of emergency contraception will inform development of intervention programs designed to increase its use, which may lead to lower rates of unintended/unplanned pregnancies in this population. Students at the 11 Midwestern institutions of the Mid-American Conference were surveyed with the help of faculty at each school. A total of 1,553 surveys were completed with a response rate of 98.4%. A small majority of students (63.5%) were female, white (75.3%) and age 18-21 years (80%). Students ranged from freshmen (23.8%) through seniors (13.8%), with sophomores as the largest group (32.6%). The majority were heterosexual (92.1%); not currently in a relationship (44.6%), with 34.1% were in a committed relationship. Participants reported having had sexual intercourse at least once in their lifetime (78.9%) with 8.4% of sexually active students having experienced an unintended/unplanned pregnancy. Students who have used emergency contraception in the last 12 months made up 18.1% of the students who also reported having had sexual intercourse at least once. Book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students

Download or read book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Though recent regulations have expanded access to EC, the numerous policy changes, lack of knowledge, and unreliable sources of information regarding EC prevent women from utilizing the benefits that EC can offer. The purpose of this study was to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to determine if there is a relationship between sexual behaviors and the use of EC. Two hundred and twelve undergraduate students from James Madison University completed an anonymous 29-question survey regarding EC. Results indicated that students were reasonably knowledgeable regarding the purpose and use of EC, with the majority of respondents answering eight out of ten questions correctly. A chi-square analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between gender and attitudes towards EC. Data showed a significant relationship between gender and attitude about (1) whether the advanced provision of EC contributes to increased risky sexual behavior and (2) whether the use of EC is the females decision only. Regarding types of risky sexual behaviors, four behaviors were evaluated: sex under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, age of first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners within the past year, and frequency of use of protection with sexual partner. Overall, of those respondents who were sexually active, majority engaged in few risky sexual behaviors and appeared to participate in safe sexual practices (having few sexual partners and frequent use of protection).
