Book An Intimate Life

Download or read book An Intimate Life written by Cheryl T. Cohen-Greene and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real life behind Helen Hunt’s Oscar-nominated performance in The Sessions: “A provocative and unusual book about a provocative and unusual profession” (Booklist). For the past forty years, Cheryl Cohen Greene has worked as a surrogate partner, helping clients to confront and ultimately accept their sexuality. In this riveting memoir, Cohen Greene shares some of her most moving cases, and also reveals her own sexual coming-of-age. Beginning with a rigid Catholic upbringing in the 1950s, where she was taught to think sex and sexual desires were unnatural and wrong, Cohen Greene struggled to reconcile her sexual identity. In the 1960s Sexual Revolution, Cohen Greene found herself drawn to alternative sexual paths, and ultimately achieved a rich and rewarding career as a surrogate partner. Sex surrogacy as a profession was first developed by noted sex researchers Masters and Johnson in the 1960s, and since its inception has remained in the shadows. An Intimate Life offers a candid look into the personal and professional life of a surrogate partner, examining the cultural and emotional ramifications of pursuing something most people consider taboo. The memoir opens with Cohen Greene’s work with Berkeley-based poet and journalist Mark O’Brien, who was confined to an iron lung after contracting polio at age six. His short essay “On Seeing A Sex Surrogate” was adapted into the film The Sessions starring John Hawkes and Helen Hunt as Cheryl T. Cohen Greene.

Book Sex Is the Least of It

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tova Feder
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014-09-29
  • ISBN : 9780692288597
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Sex Is the Least of It written by Tova Feder and published by . This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of surrogate partners grew out of the work of Masters and Johnson in the mid-1960s. Their initial research centered on understanding and improving the sex lives of married couples. Eventually their work addressed the issue of helping un-partnered individuals treat their sexual dysfunction. As necessity is the mother of invention, they recruited an untrained group of women to aid these single individuals in resolving their sexual problems. Masters and Johnson created a mechanical approach to sexuality, devoid of emotional intimacy. This book seeks to present the human face of a profession that has been shrouded in myths, misconceptions, and negative judgments. Rather than hearing the words of sexual robots, the participants reflect competence, intelligence (please see paragraph below), compassion, and wisdom. It is a profession that requires the ability to think and feel; to analyze and participate; to become emotionally involved yet maintain professional boundaries. Over the past four decades, surrogate partner therapy has grown to combine social therapeutic modalities in addition to sexual therapeutic techniques. This book utilizes, in part, the approach of interviewing 25 current and former surrogate partners to examine, compare, and contrast their experiences. It seeks to present the skills of surrogates as opposed to the sexual sensationalism which clouds objective evaluation of the subject. In addition to the interviews there are several relevant articles, being used with permission, exploring the work of other surrogates.

Book Sister Wives Surrogates and Sex Workers

Download or read book Sister Wives Surrogates and Sex Workers written by Angela Campbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did she choose that?’ Or, more normatively, ’Why would she choose that?’ This book critiques and offers an alternative to these questions, which have traditionally framed law and policy discussions circulating around controversial genderized practices. It examines the simplicity and incompleteness of choice-based rhetoric and of presumptions that women’s conduct is shaped, in an absolute way, either by choice or by coercion. This book develops an analytical framework that aims to discern the meaning and value that women may ascribe to morally ambiguous practices. An analysis of law’s approach to polygamy, surrogacy and sex work, particularly in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, provides a basis for evaluating the choice-coercion binary and for contemplating alternate modes for assessing, from a law and policy standpoint, the palatability of social practices that appear pernicious to women. Weaving together interdisciplinary research, an innovative analytical framework for assessing choices ostensibly harmful to women, and a critique of the legal rules governing such choices, this book bears relevance for students, scholars, practicing jurists and policymakers seeking a richer understanding of conduct that moves women to the margins of law and society.

Book Sexual Surrogate

Download or read book Sexual Surrogate written by Heather Hill and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More than half of all American couples are dissatisfied with their sex lives. Yet few know that effective professional help is available. As early as the 1950's, Masters and Johnston demonstrated that such common sexual problems as impotence and frigidity could be alleviated by using paid sex partners as part of a carefully planned therapeutic program. But the public remains skeptical. In her ten years as a sexual surrogate, Heather Hill, who is licensed as a sex counselor by the city of Los Angeles, has grown to expect skepticism, but has not yet become resigned to it. "Aren't you really just a high-priced called girl?" is a frequent question. This book is her reply. While it is true that she sometimes functions as a paid sexual partner, Hill sees her role as much broader and more professionally based than that. Essentially it's a therapeutic one. The cases described in Sexual Surrogate range from the familiar to the bizarre. Heather Hill's moving account of how she helps troubled men and women who come to her is at once disturbing and reassuring -- but it is always fascinating." -- book jacket.

Book The Pimping of Prostitution

Download or read book The Pimping of Prostitution written by Julie Bindel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines one of the most contested issues facing feminists, human rights activists and governments around the globe – the international sex trade. For decades, the liberal left has been conflicted as to whether pro-prostitution activists or abolitionists hold the correct view, and debates are ongoing as to who holds the key to the solutions facing the women and girls involved. Over the course of two years, Bindel conducted 250 interviews in almost 40 countries, cities and states, traveling around Europe, Asia, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and East and South Africa. Visiting legal brothels all around the world, Bindel got to know pimps, pornographers, survivors of the sex trade, and the women being sold by men classed as ‘business entrepreneurs’. Whilst meeting feminist abolitionists, pro-prostitution campaigners, police and government officials, and the men who drive the demand, Bindel uncovered the lies, mythology and criminal activity that shroud this global trade, and suggests here a way forward for the women seeking to abolish the oldest oppression. Informed by the lived human experience of those interviewed, this book will be of great interest to feminists, students, criminal justice advocates, criminologists and human rights activists.
