Book Sex Ratios Northern Pike in Minto Flats 2018

Download or read book Sex Ratios Northern Pike in Minto Flats 2018 written by Matthew Albert and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilized a laboratory assay to nonlethally determine the sex of northern pike Esox lucius sampled in Minto Flats, Alaska. A total of 592 nonlethal tissue samples were collected from northern pike with unknown sex. Sampled fish ranged from 340–940 mm fork length (FL). Genomic DNA isolated from the tissue samples was assayed using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with DNA primers that targets sex-specific regions of the master sex determining gene (amhby) for northern pike. Positive and negative control samples were included in the laboratory assay to ensure the validity of the results. Positive controls included PCRs on DNA isolated from known-sex individuals as well as a secondary PCR targeting a conserved gene region to confirm suitable DNA quality. Assays were done at the University of Alaska Museum Ichthyology Laboratory in Fairbanks, Alaska. Sex was determined for 584 of the unknown-sex samples. Male fish were found to be more prevalent in length strata 450-649 mm FL, with the sex ratio shifting toward female dominance in fish lengths ≥650 mm FL. Of the 33 sampled fish ≥800 mm FL, 32 (96.97%) were female.

Book Estimated Abundance of Northern Pike in the Chatanika River and Minto Lakes 2018

Download or read book Estimated Abundance of Northern Pike in the Chatanika River and Minto Lakes 2018 written by Matthew Albert and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A three-event mark-recapture experiment was conducted on northern pike Esox lucius in Minto Flats, Alaska from March through August 2018. Abundance was estimated for 2 specific populations: 1) an overwintering population residing in the Chatanika River upriver from its confluence with Goldstream Creek, called the Chatanika River Overwintering Area (CROA); and 2) a summer population occupying a wetland complex defined as the Minto Lakes Study Area (MLSA). Fish were sampled and marked in the CROA from 7-23 March 2018 and 12-21 June 2018 in the MLSA. Recapture events occurred in the MLSA from 12-21 June 2018 (concurrent with marking) and 7-16 August 2018. One-hundred radio tags were deployed during March 2018 to evaluate movements of northern pike relative to the mark-recapture experiment. Two models were used to estimate abundances: a traditional two-event Petersen mark-recapture model for closed populations, and a multinomial Bayesian model. The Petersen model abundance estimate of fish ≥600 mm fork length (FL) in the CROA was 14,817 (SE = 1,836) and for the MLSA was 11,956 (SE = 5,836). The Bayesian multinomial model abundance estimate for fish ≥600 mm FL in the CROA was 14,675 (SE = 1,631) and for the MLSA was 11,443 (SE = 1,651). The Bayesian multinomial model generated more precise estimates because it used data from all sampling events and incorporated information from the radiotagged fish. There were significantly more northern pike in the MLSA than what was found in 2008. Biases in the estimates were addressed and the 2 modeling approaches were evaluated. The current exploitation rate of northern pike in Minto Flats is 7.3%, which is well below the maximum threshold stipulated by the joint sport and subsistence fishery management plans.

Book Seasonal Movements of Northern Pike in Minto Flats Alaska

Download or read book Seasonal Movements of Northern Pike in Minto Flats Alaska written by Matthew L. Albert and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern pike (Esox lucius) is a large, long-lived piscivorous species that are harvested in sport and subsistence fisheries in Alaska. My study described the seasonal movements of northern pike that inhabit the Minto Lakes portion (Goldstream Creek drainage) of the Minto Flats wetland complex, Alaska, from May 2008 through January 2010. Very high frequency (VHF) radio tags (n = 220) were surgically implanted in northern pike in Minto Flats in May 2007, 2008, and 2009, and fish were relocated with fixed telemetry stations and aerial- and boat-based telemetry surveys. Radio-tagged northern pike displayed a distinct spring pre-spawning migration into the Minto Lakes study area, where they remained for the duration of the open-water season. A protracted out-migration occurred between late September and early December, with downstream movements peaking in November and October of 2008 and 2009, respectively. Radio-tagged fish present in the Minto Lakes study area during the open-water season overwintered exclusively in a 26-km reach of the Chatanika River from its confluence with Goldstream Creek upstream to the Murphy Dome Road access point. Daily movement rates were greatest during May and August. In addition to providing a better understanding of northern pike life history in Minto Flats, these results will aid managers and researchers by identifying critical habitats and providing information to better design future population assessment experiments.

Book Reproductive and Developmental Strategies

Download or read book Reproductive and Developmental Strategies written by Kazuya Kobayashi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides new insights into the universality of biological systems in animal reproduction and development by a comparative study of a variety of mechanisms in animals ranging from basal invertebrates to vertebrates, including mammals. Animals accomplish genetic diversity through meiosis and fertilization, and during embryogenesis animals must produce specialized cell types, including germ cells, in accordance with their individual body plan. This series of phenomena is essential to the continuity of life in the animal kingdom, and animals show various reproductive and developmental strategies. This volume, comprising four parts, reviews animal kingdom diversity, including reproductive strategies and germ cell differentiation mechanisms (Part 1), sex determination and differentiation (Part2), the mechanisms of fertilization (Part 3), and body axis formation (Part 4). Readers will find descriptions of the reproduction or development of 180 species, 13 phyla, 35 classes, 74 orders, 117 families, and 151 genera in this book. Of particular interest is the diversity of molecules and mechanisms used to achieve the same biological purpose in different animals. Undergraduates, graduate students, and professional scientists who want a deeper understanding of animal reproductive and developmental mechanisms will find this book to be of great value.

Book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management

Download or read book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management written by Jason Link and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible fisheries management is of increasing interest to the scientific community, resource managers, policy makers, stakeholders and the general public. Focusing solely on managing one species of fish stock at a time has become less of a viable option in addressing the problem. Incorporating more holistic considerations into fisheries management by addressing the trade-offs among the range of issues involved, such as ecological principles, legal mandates and the interests of stakeholders, will hopefully challenge and shift the perception that doing ecosystem-based fisheries management is unfeasible. Demonstrating that EBFM is in fact feasible will have widespread impact, both in US and international waters. Using case studies, underlying philosophies and analytical approaches, this book brings together a range of interdisciplinary topics surrounding EBFM and considers these simultaneously, with an aim to provide tools for successful implementation and to further the debate on EBFM, ultimately hoping to foster enhanced living marine resource management.
