Book Sex Lies and Cigarettes

Download or read book Sex Lies and Cigarettes written by Sharon Anne Cook and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite well documented health risks, young women are still drawn to the act of smoking and continue to smoke at an alarming rate. A century ago, women were vocal leaders of campaigns against tobacco across North America. In Sex, Lies, and Cigarettes, Sharon Anne Cook explores the history of the paradoxical relationship between women and the cigarette, in a sensitive and lively description of the many different meanings that smoking has held for women. Focusing on the social context of smoking, Cook explores its allure for elite, middle-class, working, and marginalized women from the late-nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. She argues that smoking's attraction is rooted in women's changing identity formation and in strategies for empowerment, an idea enriched through extensive analysis of visual culture. It is in these images (yearbooks, posters, photographic collages, print advertisements, billboards, movies) but also in the act of smoking itself, that women harnessed the power of the visual. Smoking remains a powerful way for women to express themselves and is closely connected to the processes of modernity, sexualization, and commodification of desire. Textual documents (newspapers, magazine features, textbooks, teachers' guides) and oral testimony are also explored to show how dominant discourses of smoking, sexuality, and health have shaped women's experiences and how women have moulded these discourses themselves. The first comprehensive study of women and smoking in Canada, Sex, Lies, and Cigarettes creates a rich portrait of the cultural factors that have resulted in over a century of women smokers.

  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Risky Lessons written by Jessica Fields and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curricula in U.S. public schools are often the focus of heated debate, and few subjects spark more controversy than sex education. While conservatives argue that sexual abstinence should be the only message, liberals counter that an approach that provides comprehensive instruction and helps young people avoid sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy is necessary. Caught in the middle are the students and teachers whose everyday experiences of sex education are seldom as clear-cut as either side of the debate suggests. Risky Lessons brings readers inside three North Carolina middle schools to show how students and teachers support and subvert the official curriculum through their questions, choices, viewpoints, and reactions. Most important, the book highlights how sex education's formal and informal lessons reflect and reinforce gender, race, and class inequalities. Ultimately critical of both conservative and liberal approaches, Fields argues for curricula that promote social and sexual justice. Sex education's aim need not be limited to reducing the risk of adolescent pregnancies, disease, and sexual activity. Rather, its lessons should help young people to recognize and contend with sexual desires, power, and inequalities.

  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book From Teacher to Lover written by Tara Star Johnson and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decade since Mary Kay Letourneau's infamous liaison with her sixth-grade student was exposed, the reporting of sexual misconduct cases among teachers has proliferated. The amount of media attention - to women teachers in particular - has increased because the public is titillated and baffled by such cases of aberrant female sexuality. This is a qualitative case study of two high school English teachers, Hannah and Kim, who each had a sexual relationship with a student. Their cases are examined, along with those of Letourneau and Heather Ingram, two headline-heavy teachers whose backgrounds and patterns of behavior within the relationships are similar to Hannah's and Kim's. Without judging or sympathizing, this book elucidates the process by which these women crossed the ethical and professional line from teacher to lover. Teacher educators concerned about raising issues of gender, sexuality, and embodiment in their classes will find this a thorny but compelling text for generating dialogue about the taboo topic of bodies in education.

Book Sex Lies and Triathlon

Download or read book Sex Lies and Triathlon written by Leib Dodell and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triathletes are a unique breed. Amateur triathlete and humorist Leib Dodell has been living among them for years, often chronicling their foibles and eccentricities in the pages of Inside Triathlon magazine. Whether you are a beginning triathlete, a battle-tested age-grouper, or an elite competitor, the hilarious stories and anecdotes in Sex, Lies and Triathlon perfectly capture the triathlon lifestyle. Or maybe you've never even considered doing a race, but there's a triathlete in your life somewhere - a relative, colleague, boyfriend or girlfriend, or (God help you) a spouse. Sex, Lies and Triathlon will give you a wickedly funny, if somewhat frightening, glimpse into their world. Here are a few examples: On training workouts: "Basically, a good hard workout is like the exact opposite of casual sex: You always dread it beforehand, but afterwards you're always really glad you did it."On warming up before a race: "I generally consider it a successful warm-up if I can find a reasonably clean bathroom with toilet paper and a door that closes - and that's just in my apartment."On winning the "lottery" to compete in the Hawaii Ironman: "Competing in the Ironman is hardly the kind of windfall one normally associates with winning a lottery. It's like getting a letter in the mail that says, in giant 24-point type, 'CONGRATULATIONS! YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY WON 12 HOURS OF EXCRUCIATING MISERY AND PAIN!!'"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Backstreet By: Daniel Vincent Pierce Three teenage boys, Michael, Sean, and Brandon, seem to be typical high school students at Evan Senior High School: they love sports, parties, and having fun. They all have to deal with different things while they grow up, but they eventually find friendship and support from each other. They discover a hot new hangout, BACKSTREET. It becomes the hottest place for teenagers to party on the weekends, but it also brings more danger than anyone could imagine. The three boys, misled by their arrogance and ego, don’t realize their bad decisions can haunt them for the rest of their life. Hopefully, the readers will picture their own high school experiences while reading this book. In particular those born in the 1950’s and 1960’s and remember the riots in the late 1960’s after Dr. King’s assassination. Some readers may find that their own children and teenagers in general continue to deal with the same issues.

Book Schooling in Disadvantaged Communities

Download or read book Schooling in Disadvantaged Communities written by Carmen Mills and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a study of one secondary school located in a disadvantaged community in Australia, this book provides a different perspective on what it means to ‘play the game’ of schooling. Drawing on the perspectives of teachers, parents and students, this book is a window through which to explore the possibilities of schooling in disadvantaged communities. The authors contend that teachers, parents and students themselves are all involved in the game of reproducing disadvantage in schooling, but similarly, they can play a part in opening up opportunities for change to enhance learning for marginalised students. Rather than only attempting to transform students, teachers should be also be concerned to transform schooling; to provide educational opportunities that transform the life experiences of and open up opportunities for all young people, especially those disadvantaged by poverty and marginalised by difference. The book is also designed to stimulate understanding of the work of Bourdieu as well as of a Bourdieuian approach to research. Seeing transformative potential in his theoretical constructs, it airs the possibility that schools can be more than mere reproducers of society.
