Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a d104book Since the three volumes of "American Sewerage Practice" were published in 1914-1915, the authors have been urged to prepare a single-volume abridgment of them for class use in engineering schools. The authors were reluctant to do this, because of two conditions. The first is the great variation in the time devoted to sewerage engineering in different schools. This has the result that a textbook so brief as to verge on the superficial from the viewpoint of one class may be too detailed for another. The second condition is the fact that some of those features of sewerage engineering which in practice it is most important to master are apparently held by those laying out college courses to deserve little attention from students. For example, a wise estimate of the quantities of sewage and storm water to be handled is the basis of design of a sewerage system, yet the methods of preparing such estimates and actual practice in their use receive relatively little attention in college courses. Furthermore, the best arrangement of the main sewers in a sewerage plan may depend largely upon the treatment, if any, that the sewage must receive before disposal and upon the place of disposal, subjects involving a knowledge of the nature of sewage and the changes which it undergoes under natural conditions or those involved in specific methods of treatment. Yet some college classes in sewerage engineering receive no instruction in sewage treatment. As the requests for a textbook continued, the authors finally decided to prepare a book giving the information which they consider it desirable for the young student to acquire before taking up work in this field. In a sense, they have felt under obligations as professional engineering specialists to do their part in smoothing the way for the first steps taken by engineering students in this branch of engineering. This book can be used in two ways. The text can be read and mastered within the time allotted to the subject even when the course is very short. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Sewerage Practice, Vol. 3: Disposal of Sewage The developments in the art of sewage treatment during the nineteen years since the publication of the second edition of this volume have been so numerous and have spread out in so many directions that it has been necessary to rewrite completely a large proportion of the text. As the fundamental principles involved in the older methods of treat ment in large measure underlie the newer processes and as many of the more recent installations consist of combinations of the older and the newer features, an effort has been made to devote adequate space to both groups of processes and thus to maintain a balance that would be most helpful to readers in general, rather than to devote an excessively large proportion of space to the new processes, which naturally are of absorbing interest to many investigators. A few cost data have been included, for the purpose of giving readers a general idea of the costs of constructing and operating certain features of treatment plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Having had occasion in my own practice to in vestigate the information which of recent years has become available to engineers, through the researches of chemists and biologists, in relation to Water Supply, Sewerage and Sewage Disposal, I have thought that a concise summary of the most important data would be useful. I have confined this book as far as possible within the limits of data in connection with works of Sewerage and Sewage Disposal, although in dealing with River Pollution and Filtration of Impure Water, the allied subjects of Water Pollution and Sewage Purification necessarily overlap. In fact, the functions of micro-organisms, which affect the consideration of both, must be well understood by engineers who have to advise in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sewerage and Sewage Disposal HE subject of Sewerage and Sewage Disposal is one upon which many books have already been written, but, generally speaking, . They contain a considerable amount of matter which is more or less theoretical, and much information, of methods good and bad, from which the reader is left to draw his own conclusions. The present work is intended to be more in the nature of a practical handbook, giving definite advice, as far as possible, to those who have actually to carry out work, omitting descriptions of unsatisfactory methods, and leaving the theoretical side of the question alone. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book on Sewage Disposal in the United Kingdom "I have read with considerable interest the manuscript of Mr. Lemmoin-Cannon's 'd104book on Sewage Disposal in the United Kingdom.' The work not only contains a great deal of information on the subject, but gives evidence of a knowledge of detail concerning the matters with which it deals, put together in a practical manner, which should prove of value to students and others, either as Surveyors or Engineers. "It is within my knowledge that the Author was suffering under the greatest physical disadvantages at the time the book was written, and my admiration for the courage which surmounted all difficulties, together with my conviction that the work will prove a useful one, induce me to recommend it as a reliable textbook for those called upon to study this special subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Since the recognition of their significance in the promotion of the public health, methods of water purification and sewage disposal have earned a steadily increasing importance. Consequently, these branches of industry have enjoyed the most zealous atten tion of the scientist and of the engineer. I have endeavoured in the present monograph to give a survey, short perhaps, but as complete as possible, of the present position in regard to Water Purification and Sewage Disposal. Owing to the wide range of this subject particular processes could only be treated shortly in the space at disposal. One chapter, which is very fully treated in the present volume, though slightly elsewhere, is the disposal of industrial sewage. Many of the processes of purification are of quite recent date, and fresh experience is being obtained daily and reported upon in the most diverse publications. I have endeavoured to collect such information. In the translation some small changes and additions have been made in the chapters on sand filtration, the removal of manganese, and Travis and Emscher wells. Book Principles of Sewage Treatment Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Sewage Treatment During the last few years I have been repeatedly asked to write a comprehensive book on the sewage problem. About a year ago, when preparing a lecture on the then position of the subjects of river pollution and sewage treatment, I decided to abandon the scruples which I had previously held against writing such a book, f then thought the task was an easy one, for during the previous ten years or more I had carefully followed all matters connected with the sewage problem. However, I have had to make many inquiries and investigations, and my material has gradually become almost unlimited, so that it would now be easier for me to compile a work of reference than to write a short book on the principles of the subject. I do not consider the time ripe for the publication of a work of reference, because the whole problem of sewage disposal is developing just now at such a rapid rate that opinions which have been held for a very long time are daily giving way in the face of newly-established facts. Under these circumstances, those who have not been able to follow the separate phases of this development become hopelessly lost in attempting to follow the literature on the subject; they do not recognise all the new forms of apparatus which are mentioned and the new names which are used, and thus feel the need of a book dealing with the principles of the subject, a book written during the development itself, and grouping and critically describing the various phases of this development. Such a book cannot pretend to deal fully with all the numerous legal enactments and proposals which have been made with regard to sewage treatment. Bearing all this in mind, I have repeatedly been forced to omit some facts which are of themselves valuable as supporting various opinions, and others which appeared to require further investigation before being finally accepted. Whilst the book has been passing through the press a considerable number of contributions to the subject have been published. I have tried to include these as far as possible in my material, but a full discussion will appear as a kind of appendix to this book in the pages of the Gesundheits-Ingenieur. Download or read book Sewage Disposal in the United States Classic Reprint written by Geo W. Rafter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal in the United States Questions of River Pollution and Sewage Disposal have assumed so much importance in this country that no excuse is necessary for putting forth an American treatise on the subject. The chief object, therefore, of this book is to specifically call the attention of sanitary authorities, engineers, and others interested in questions of public sanitation, to the fact that we have already accumulated a considerable stock of experience in sewage disposal in this country, and that for the future Americans, who wish to study the subject in detail, will not be obliged, as until recently was the case, to go abroad for the purpose. In making this remark we do not wish to be understood as discouraging the study of foreign precedents in sewage disposal; on the contrary, it is cheerfully conceded, inasmuch as the necessity for sewage purification first arose abroad, that consequently the foreign engineers had the opportunity to attack the problem first, and we may very properly profit by their experience. The full idea is that the conditions here are generally quite dissimilar from those obtaining abroad, and that, with most of the feasible methods of sewage purification now in successful operation, the chances are decidedly in favor of quite as much profit from studying carefully the results obtained here as can be expected from the casual examination of executed projects abroad, which, after all, are for the most part only relatively applicable. The experience at Worcester, Massachusetts, is a striking exemplification of the truth that in the end the American engineer must design works to suit his specific case. In the preliminary discussion at Worcester it was nearly universally assumed that, by reason of an identity of climatic conditions between Worcester and Danzig, the sewage irrigation fields of the latter city might be duplicated at Worcester, and results obtained quite as successful as those attending sewage farming at Danzig. Rut Mr. Allen took the ground that the climatic conditions were sufficiently dissimilar to render an extensive sewage farm at Worcester an experiment, relative to which it was impossible to predicate success from what had occurred at Danzig.
