At the same time, it appeared to afford an excellent opportunity to include full details of all the various methods of design and construction in general use, and thus provide a complete work dealing with the whole subject. The result is the present volume, which, it is hoped, will prove of value to those engaged in this branch of engineering. In any future editions that may be required, it will be the endeavour of the Author to omit any details which may have become obsolete, and to include particulars of any new methods of construction, systems or appliances, which may be brought into use from time to time, and he will therefore be glad to receive particulars of new appliances and systems as they are introduced. The author has endeavoured to meet the want of an illustrated guide to the construction of Sewage Works, by bringing together in this volume some of the best examples Of executed works. He has, however, been unable to obtain the particulars relating to some good examples, and this fact will account for their non-inclusion. In preparing the first part of the work, the author has not hesitated to make such references to the various Commissions on River Pollution as he thought necessary. Such information may be ancient history to the Older practitioners, but to the student it is indispensable. During the long period in which the author was connected with the Wimbledon Works, be had opportunities Of seeing Sewage treated under almost every condition, and be fully appreciates the difficulty of finding a universal solution to the Sewage problem. Progress is, however, being constantly made, and it will be conceded that, especially in the treatment Of sludge, means are now available, by the employment of which that troublesome material may be dealt with without causing offence. This in itself is of the first importance as regards works where the clarification of the Sewage is effected by means of tanks and chemicals.
