Book Sewage Disposal in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewage Disposal in the United States Classic Reprint written by George W. Rafter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal in the United States Quoted matter has generally been indicated by the use of smaller type. Quotations have been freely made in Part I. In all those cases where the quoted matter appears necessary for a complete discussion, or where nothing can be added to what the various authors have originally written. In Part II. We have preferred to quote at length from available memoirs prepared by the engineers who have actually designed and constructed the different works, because these memoirs, by reason of embodying the results of personal experience, are more valuable than any mere abstract could be possibly made. We have assumed, in short, that the making of the ideal sewage disposal manual is to some extent a matter of discreet editing. Book Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint written by George W. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal The limiting factors and conditions in present practice are described at length, with suitable summaries. The third part of this book deals with what have been generally called preparatory arrangements for the treatment of sewage. Screening, settling tanks, septic tanks, chemical precipitation tanks, electrolytic treatment and strainers are discussed in much detail, particularly septicization in two-story tanks. Resumes as to their present standing are given for each device. The fourth part deals with filtration matters with a view to recording present practice. The closing pages of the book are devoted to aeration, sterilization and ozonization processes as they are now understood, with a few explanations as to institutional and residential plants, and a final comparative summary of general costs and efficiencies. If any particular veiwpoint has prevailed in connection with the preparation of this book, it is that of the operator of disposal works. I desire to acknowledge my obligation, for data and aid, to Mr. C. B. Hoover, Mr. E. S. Chase and Mr. R. S. Lanphear, in charge of the operation of the disposal works at Columbus, Ohio; Reading, Pa.; and Plainfield, N. J., respectively. At a time when medical authorities have a tendency to favor complete sewage purification regardless of the need or cost of such a project, it is hoped that the results of practical accomplishments as described in this book may be of aid. The same may be said as to the descriptions of the underlying chemical, biological and physical conditions which should receive attention from the engineer who has to design and build disposal works either for dispersion in large bodies of water or for clarification, filtration or sterilization. Use has been made freely in this book of various professional papers prepared in recent years by me and also professional reports which I have made both individually and as a member of the former firm of Hering Fuller. Lawrence data have also been used freely and suggestions have been received from Mr. H.W. Clark in regard to some of the reports of the Massachusetts State Board of Health since 1894, when there was published a summary of results, prepared by me, of the first seven years of operation of the Lawrence experiment station. Book Sewer Building and Sewage Disposal by the American System

Download or read book Sewer Building and Sewage Disposal by the American System written by John N. McClintock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewer Building and Sewage Disposal by the American System: Discovered by Amasa S. Glover, Protected by United States Patents No. 559522 and 719357 Owned by American Sewage Disposal Company of Boston In considering the construction of a sewer system, a rough estimate of the probable cost is generally sought. The preliminary topographical plan will cost from 50 cents to per acre of territory to be drained, according to the characteristics of the surface, whether flat or diversified, thinly or thickly settled. A well considered design may cost from 2 to 10 cents per inhabitant, according to the size of the place; making plans for building and record will cost from to $40.00per mile of sewer pipe. A twelve-inch pipe with proper inlets can be laid eight feet below the surface for per foot. If ledge is en countered the cost is increased. Ledge work will cost from to per cubic yard, according to the hardness of the stone and depth below the surface. Manholes and catch basins averaging 150 feet apart will cost about or each. The separate system for sewage and surface water is usually recommended, with proper appliances for flushing, to save cost of work. Disposal works will cost approximately from to per inhabitant. Plans for the same may be furnished at 5% of their cost. Chemical precipitation will cost per year 20 cents per inhabitant. The cost of the trunk sewers of a system, of course, will depend upon their size. A completed sewer system in running order will cost from to per running foot or from to per mile, for a place of considerable size. Small systems will cost less. Book Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a Textbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a Textbook Classic Reprint written by Leonard Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a d104book Since the three volumes of "American Sewerage Practice" were published in 1914-1915, the authors have been urged to prepare a single-volume abridgment of them for class use in engineering schools. The authors were reluctant to do this, because of two conditions. The first is the great variation in the time devoted to sewerage engineering in different schools. This has the result that a textbook so brief as to verge on the superficial from the viewpoint of one class may be too detailed for another. The second condition is the fact that some of those features of sewerage engineering which in practice it is most important to master are apparently held by those laying out college courses to deserve little attention from students. For example, a wise estimate of the quantities of sewage and storm water to be handled is the basis of design of a sewerage system, yet the methods of preparing such estimates and actual practice in their use receive relatively little attention in college courses. Furthermore, the best arrangement of the main sewers in a sewerage plan may depend largely upon the treatment, if any, that the sewage must receive before disposal and upon the place of disposal, subjects involving a knowledge of the nature of sewage and the changes which it undergoes under natural conditions or those involved in specific methods of treatment. Yet some college classes in sewerage engineering receive no instruction in sewage treatment. As the requests for a textbook continued, the authors finally decided to prepare a book giving the information which they consider it desirable for the young student to acquire before taking up work in this field. In a sense, they have felt under obligations as professional engineering specialists to do their part in smoothing the way for the first steps taken by engineering students in this branch of engineering. This book can be used in two ways. The text can be read and mastered within the time allotted to the subject even when the course is very short. Book Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint written by J. Tillmans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Since the recognition of their significance in the promotion of the public health, methods of water purification and sewage disposal have earned a steadily increasing importance. Consequently, these branches of industry have enjoyed the most zealous atten tion of the scientist and of the engineer. I have endeavoured in the present monograph to give a survey, short perhaps, but as complete as possible, of the present position in regard to Water Purification and Sewage Disposal. Owing to the wide range of this subject particular processes could only be treated shortly in the space at disposal. One chapter, which is very fully treated in the present volume, though slightly elsewhere, is the disposal of industrial sewage. Many of the processes of purification are of quite recent date, and fresh experience is being obtained daily and reported upon in the most diverse publications. I have endeavoured to collect such information. In the translation some small changes and additions have been made in the chapters on sand filtration, the removal of manganese, and Travis and Emscher wells. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Having had occasion in my own practice to in vestigate the information which of recent years has become available to engineers, through the researches of chemists and biologists, in relation to Water Supply, Sewerage and Sewage Disposal, I have thought that a concise summary of the most important data would be useful. I have confined this book as far as possible within the limits of data in connection with works of Sewerage and Sewage Disposal, although in dealing with River Pollution and Filtration of Impure Water, the allied subjects of Water Pollution and Sewage Purification necessarily overlap. In fact, the functions of micro-organisms, which affect the consideration of both, must be well understood by engineers who have to advise in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal Works: Their Design and Construction In other works dealing with this subject it has been customary to use as illustrations, drawings of works actually carried out by their authors or other engineers. While these are interesting and valuable to a certain extent, their application under other conditions is limited, and their use fulness is thus much reduced. In the present volume the illustrations Of the various-details Of construction do not, as a rule, represent actual working drawings adapted to any particular set Of conditions, but are shown in diagrammatic form for the purpose Of serving as suggestions to engineers in search Of ideas which they can adapt to meet the require ments Of any particular scheme upon which they may be engaged. It will follow that the engineer must. In all cases rely upon his own practical experience and judgment in deciding to adopt any of the various methods Of design and construction illustrated and described in the following pages and it may be found that a combination Of several types, or even a combination Of several details Of different types, combined with practical experience and mature judgment, will frequently produce the most suitable and efficient scheme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sewerage and Sewage Disposal HE subject of Sewerage and Sewage Disposal is one upon which many books have already been written, but, generally speaking, . They contain a considerable amount of matter which is more or less theoretical, and much information, of methods good and bad, from which the reader is left to draw his own conclusions. The present work is intended to be more in the nature of a practical handbook, giving definite advice, as far as possible, to those who have actually to carry out work, omitting descriptions of unsatisfactory methods, and leaving the theoretical side of the question alone.
