This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hafren Power's proposal for an 18km fixed tidal barrage across the Severn estuary between Brean in England and Lavernock Point in Wales is likely to require a very high level of support over many years. It is not believed at this stage that the barrage would be competitive with other low-carbon technologies. Hafren Power have failed to answer the serious environmental concerns about a potential barrage adequately. The scale of mitigation measures and compensatory habitat required is unprecedented, and questions remain about how a barrage such as the one proposed would comply with EU legislation. Tidal energy is a vast resource which remains largely untapped. However, tidal and marine projects must demonstrate their economic, environmental and technological credentials and their ability to gain stakeholder support. The Government should consider whether a smaller tidal facility could develop expertise and provide evidence before a decision about scaling up is taken. Although construction of the barrage would be privately financed, Government support would be required for approximately thirty years through Contracts for Difference (CfD) or a similar mechanism. The long lifecycle of a tidal barrage, thought to operate for over 120 years, could lower the overall levelised cost of energy but is far too distant a prospect to overcome more immediate concerns. The strike price required by Hafren Power is unknown, but the ability of the project to compete with other low-carbon forms of energy is questionable. The likelihood of a high strike price over many years risks eating up an excessively large proportion of the funds available under the Levy Control Framework

Book The EU s Target for Renewable Energy

Download or read book The EU s Target for Renewable Energy written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 27th report from the European Union Committee (HLP 175-I, ISBN 9780104013656) and examines the European Union target for renewable energy. Known as the 20/20 package, the European Commission wishes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, as well as increasing the proportion of final energy consumption from renewable sources to 20%, both by 2020. Each Member State will be given a national target based on their existing renewable generation, their GDP and a flat-increase for all. The Committee believes that achieving the 20% increase of energy via renewable resources will be extremely challenging, and states that further research is required in this area. Further, the Commission's objective of creating a standardised Guarantee of Origin (GoO), where Member States could meet part of their targets by counting energy generated in another country for which they have bought a GoO certificate, is seen by the Committee as potentially undermining efforts to increase renewable generation domestically. The starting point for the Government is a reduction of the absolute level of final energy consumption through energy efficiency and saving measures. Further the Government needs to commit more fully to increasing the level of renewable heat in the UK and should increase grants for microgeneration along with support to bring emerging technologies, such as wind power to a commercially viable state. The Committee also highlights the barriers of meeting its targets in respect of the access given to renewable generators to the electricity grid, and believes the generators should be allowed to connect ahead of grid capacity upgrades. The Committee believes that the 20/20 targets are unachievable unless the Government take quick and decisive action on all fronts, including large -scale generation, microgeneration and energy efficiency. Meeting the target will increase energy costs for consumers, but offers a way forward in moving away from the use of fossil fuels in the future.

Book Environmental Hydraulics Volume 1

Download or read book Environmental Hydraulics Volume 1 written by Georgos C. Christodoulou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades environmental hydraulics as an academic discipline has expanded considerably, caused by growing concerns over water environmental issues associated with pollution and water balance problems on regional and global scale. These issues require a thorough understanding of processes related to environmental flows and transport phenomena, and the development of new approaches for practical solutions. Environmental Hydraulics includes about 200 contributions from 35 countries presented at the 6th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics (Athens, Greece, 23-25 June 2010). They cover the state-of-the-art on a broad range of topics, including: fundamentals aspects of environmental fluid mechanics; environmental hydraulics problems of inland, coastal and ground waters; interfacial processes; computational, experimental and field measurement techniques; ecological aspects, and effects of global climate change. Environmental Hydraulics will be of interest to researchers, civil/environmental engineers, and professional engineers dealing with the design and operation of environmental hydraulic works such as wastewater treatment and disposal, river and marine constructions, and to academics and graduate students in related fields.

Book Principles of Sustainable Energy

Download or read book Principles of Sustainable Energy written by Frank Kreith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A transition from a fossil fuel–based economy to one that uses renewable energy has become inevitable; this transition will not only be an engineering challenge, but will also be an economic and environmental one. Offering an interdisciplinary, quantitative approach, Principles of Sustainable Energy presents a comprehensive overview of the major renewable energy technologies currently available, including biomass and biofuels, solar thermal conversion, photovoltaics, and wind energy conversion. Written by renowned expert Frank Kreith, the book emphasizes economics as well as energy return on investment analyses for each technology and integrates the need for energy conservation with the overall aspects of building a sustainable energy system with renewable sources. The author covers energy storage in depth, because it is considered one of the most important, and problematic, requirements for building a sustainable renewable energy system. Treatments of the economics of nuclear power and options for transportation systems are also included. The book contains worked-out example problems illustrating engineering analyses from a systems perspective and problem sets to reinforce concepts and applications. Examples and exercises relating to solar energy systems cover latitudes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and use current worldwide solar radiation data. But this text is not merely academic: its clearheaded look at the energy picture from the ground up, and the environmental, economic, and sustainability benefits that renewable energy systems can provide, make it a resource for government and industry as well as a text for engineering students.
