Book The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond

Download or read book The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond written by Peter Hadfield and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond includes a wealth of unique memories and experiences from a collection of railway enthusiasts, who in their youth were fascinated by the steam locomotives that ruled the rails. Discover what it was like growing up in York and experiencing the sights and sounds of the giants of the former LNER system, including A4s, A3s, A2s, A1s and V2s, along with the Jubilees, the Royal Scots, and Black Fives of the former LMS system and the BR Standards. Explore life on the footplate of the engines allocated to Royston shed, right up to the end of steam. Read about the push and pull service that ran from Cudworth - Barnsley - Cudworth across the iconic Oaks Viaduct, as well as the Barnsley - Doncaster and York - Doncaster - Darlington journeys. Memories of Leeds, Normanton, Doncaster, Wath and Penistone are also included, in addition to shed layout drawings of Royston, Doncaster and York. Providing a fascinating insight into a railway system now long gone, the book is designed to ignite the memories of anyone who enjoyed the thrill of trainspotting during the 1950s and early 1960s, when steam was still king, before the rapid introduction of diesel and electric traction led to the complete elimination of steam from the rail network in 1968, with the exception of Flying Scotsman. The 1970s saw the return of steam on the mainline with steam specials powered by preserved locomotives.

Book Steroid Contraceptives and Women s Response

Download or read book Steroid Contraceptives and Women s Response written by Rachel Snow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacokinetic variability of contraceptive steroids is a relatively under-explored area of contraceptive research, and hardly a common point of discussion among those who plan and deliver family planning services. Nevertheless, numerous independent studies over the last 15 years have indicated that women in different regions of the world vary in their pharmacokinetic response to contraceptive steroids. The causes of such variability are not known, but it has important consequences for contraceptive effectiveness. It may also offer insight to the basis of contraceptive side-effects. The impetus for this volume was to collect documentation of pharmacokinetic variability of contraceptive steroids, and to explore both the possible causes and implications of these data. Factors known to affect steroid pharmacokinetics, such as concurrent use of specific medications, are reviewed by Back and Orme. Other factors known to affect endogenous steroid dynamics are presented in chapters by Bradlow, Longcope, Goldin and Snow, because of their possible role in contraceptive steroid pharmacokinetics.

Book Southern and West Country Airfields of the D Day Invasion Air Force

Download or read book Southern and West Country Airfields of the D Day Invasion Air Force written by Peter Jacobs and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As part of the Aviation Heritage Trail series, the airfields and interest in this book are concentrated in a particular area in this case West Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and Cornwall. The South and South-west of England emerged from six years of war with a rich diversity of RAF bomber and fighter airfields used by the 2nd Tactical Air Force, both before and after the D-Day landings. Much of this proud legacy is now threatening to disappear. However, the tourist can combine visits to an abundance of disused and active airfields, country houses and museums with countless attractions, imaginative locations, broad land, and coastal hideaways that have no equal. The airfields and other places of interest include Hartford Bridge, Lasham, Westhamptonett, Merston, Odiham, Holmsley South, Funtington, Hurn, Ford, Tangmere, Ibsley, Perranporth, Thruxton, Thorney Island, Appledram, Selesy, Needs Oar Point, Zeals, Lee-on-Solent and Bognor Regis. This book looks at the history and personalities associated with each base, what remains today and explores the favorite local wartime haunts where aircrew and ground crew would have sought well-deserved entertainment and relaxation. Other museums and places that are relevant will also be described and general directions on how to get them included."

Book One Coach s Journey from East to West

Download or read book One Coach s Journey from East to West written by Vladimir Zaglada and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE COACHS JOURNEY FROM EAST TO WEST: HOW THE FALL OF THE IRON CURTAIN CHANGED THE WORLD OF GYMNASTICS Until the fall of the Soviet Union the West and the Communists were engaged not only in a heated arms race but a race for Olympic gold, and Moscow poured tremendous resources into the effort, attracting some of the country's greatest minds. Author Vladimir Zaglada provides a look inside some of the Soviet Unions gymnastics think tanks, such as the Moscows Lenin Institute. One Coach's Journey from East to West also introduces us to some of the brilliant and colorful figures that have advanced the art of gymnastics and examines how the flood of coaching talent into the West has shifted the "balance of power." The force of this "flood" has been somewhat impeded by cultural and language barriers, which are also discussed in the book. "Hot topics" such as the relentless increase in the difficulty level of artistic gymnastics are also discussed and a number of technical issues are covered, complete with illustrations. Zaglada provides a rare look inside the world of Soviet gymnastics at its height and provides information never before published in English. Did the machinery that cranked out Soviet gymnastics champions allow for a happy childhood? Why has the balance of power in gymnastics shifted in America's favor but will Russia retake the throne? The rigid line between "amateurs" (who are true professionals in almost all senses of the word) and professionals is the "amateur" in "amateur gymnastics sacred? Is there an ideal physique for women's gymnastics? How much of current American coaching practice can be traced back to Soviet sports institutes? Ever heard of the "profile system"? What is the difference between an Arabian, an Onodi, and a Mostepanova? Why a few basic terms are constant sources of confusion. How effective was the system of incentives for Soviet gymnasts and coaches? How did the nomenklatura system of privileges and patronage impact Soviet gymnastics?
