Book Seventh U S National Conference on Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Seventh U S National Conference on Earthquake Engineering written by Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the twenty-ninth volume in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute's series, Connections: The EERI Oral History Series. EERI began this series to preserve the recollections of some of those who have had pioneering careers in the field of earthquake engineering. Significant, even revolutionary, changes have occurred in earthquake engineering since individuals first began thinking in modern, scientific ways about how to protect construction and society from earthquakes. The Connections series helps document this important history. This volume in the EERI Oral History Series presents the life and career of Anil K. Chopra, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. After he graduated from college in India, he went to UC Berkeley to earn his Master's and PhD degrees, then taught at the University of Minnesota before returning to join the faculty of UC Berkeley for the next 47 years, retiring in 2016. The first class he was asked to teach at UC Berkeley was structural dynamics, a course which had been started by his mentors, Ray Clough and Joe Penzien. His work in that field resulted in a number of publications on a wide range of topics in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. Chopra chaired the structural analysis committee of the project producing the influential ATC-3, Tentative Provisions for the Development of Seismic Regulations for Buildings, and he tells interesting stories about working with Nate Newmark, Emilio Rosenblueth, Henry Degenkolb, and others. His expertise in structural dynamics resulted in his being asked to write the EERI monograph on structural dynamics, Dynamics of Structures: A Primer, and later led to his very widely used university textbook, Dynamics of Structures: Theory and Application to Earthquake Engineering, now in its fifth edition. A major theme in Chopra's research is the seismic analysis and design of concrete dams. He and a number of PhD students developed procedures for earthquake analysis of concrete dams, and he has consulted on dozens of major projects around the world. In 2020 he published his comprehensive book on the subject, Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams: Analysis, Design, and Evaluation.

Book Facing Hazards and Disasters

Download or read book Facing Hazards and Disasters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-09-10 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social science research conducted since the late 1970's has contributed greatly to society's ability to mitigate and adapt to natural, technological, and willful disasters. However, as evidenced by Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean tsunami, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and other recent events, hazards and disaster research and its application could be improved greatly. In particular, more studies should be pursued that compare how the characteristics of different types of events-including predictability, forewarning, magnitude, and duration of impact-affect societal vulnerability and response. This book includes more than thirty recommendations for the hazards and disaster community.

Book The 1755 Lisbon Earthquake Revisited

Download or read book The 1755 Lisbon Earthquake Revisited written by Luiz Mendes-Victor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1755 earthquake and tsunami were influential not only in Portugal but in all European and North African countries where the devastating effects were felt. The entire world was deeply impressed and the discussion of its causes generated a large amount of scientific and metaphysical speculation. It inspired philosophers, poets and writers. The socio-economic consequences of the event were great and affected the future organization and development of Portugal. The possibility of a similar occurence urges society and the scientific community to reflect on its lessons. Audience This work is of interest to experts in seismology, earthquake engineering, civil protection, urban planning and it is a reference book for doctoral students.

Book Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions Second Edition

Download or read book Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions Second Edition written by George G. Penelis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete (R/C) is one of the main building materials used worldwide, and an understanding of its structural performance under gravity and seismic loads, albeit complex, is crucial for the design of cost effective and safe buildings. Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions comprehensively covers of all the analysis and design issues related to the design of reinforced concrete buildings under seismic action. It is suitable as a reference to the structural engineer dealing with specific problems during the design process and also for undergraduate and graduate structural, concrete and earthquake engineering courses. This revised edition provides new and significantly developed coverage of seismic isolation and passive devices, and coverage of recent code modifications as well as notes on future developments of standards. It retains an overview of structural dynamics, the analysis and design of new R/C buildings in seismic regions, post-earthquake damage evaluation, pre-earthquake assessment of buildings and retrofitting procedures, and several numerical examples. The book outlines appropriate structural systems for many types of buildings, explores recent developments, and covers the last two decades of analysis, design, and earthquake engineering. It specifically addresses seismic demand issues and the basic issues of structural dynamics, considers the "capacity" of structural systems to withstand seismic effects in terms of strength and deformation, and highlights the assessment of existing R/C buildings under seismic action. All of the material has been developed to fit a modern seismic code and offers in-depth knowledge of the background upon which the code rules are based. It complies with European Codes of Practice for R/C buildings in seismic regions, and includes references to current American Standards for seismic design.

Book Lifeline Earthquake Engineering

Download or read book Lifeline Earthquake Engineering written by Michael J. O'Rourke and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent advances in research, practice, post earthquake investigation, and public policy in lifeline earthquake engineering as a discipline and as a component of infrastructure rehabilitation. Written by utility engineers, consultants, managers, and transportation agency personnel from various nations, papers review newer emerging topics of lifeline interaction and socio-economic effects, as well as hazard assessment methods, analysis procedures, and design approaches. Topics range from bridge analysis and rehabilitation to bridge earthquake damage assessment, electric power and communications to gas and liquid fuels. Case studies and papers detail the seismic assessment of offshore pipelines; above ground pipeline response to random ground motion; bridge prioritization for emergency responses; inspection and rehabilitation of tunnels across faults; and spectral characteristics of vertical ground motion in the Northridge and other earthquakes.
