Download or read book What America Read written by Gordon Hutner and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-05 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vigorous study of modern American fiction, today's readers are only familiar with a partial shelf of a vast library. Gordon Hutner describes the distorted, canonized history of the twentieth-century American novel as a record of modern classics insufficiently appreciated in their day but recuperated by scholars in order to shape the grand tradition of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner. In presenting literary history this way, Hutner argues, scholars have forgotten a rich treasury of realist novels that recount the story of the American middle-class's confrontation with modernity. Reading these novels now offers an extraordinary opportunity to witness debates about what kind of nation America would become and what place its newly dominant middle class would have--and, Hutner suggests, should also lead us to wonder how our own contemporary novels will be remembered.

Book Conrad in the Public Eye

Download or read book Conrad in the Public Eye written by John Gerard Peters and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of difficult-to-find and typically early commentary on Conrad¿s life and works. The selections contained shed light on Conrad¿s life and works, as well as the way in which his works were promoted to the public. Selections include those by the American novelist Christopher Morley and the Irish novelist Liam O¿Flaherty. Also included is a previously unpublished essay by Conrad¿s friend Richard Curle. Of particular interest are the promotional materials, which are collected together for the first time and reveal how Conrad was perceived by the general reading public and how he was marketed by his publishers.

Book The Hemingway Short Story

Download or read book The Hemingway Short Story written by George Monteiro and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Hemingway revolutionized the American short story, establishing himself as a master of realist fiction in the tradition of Guy de Mauppasant. Yet none of Hemingway’s emulators has succeeded in duplicating his understated, minimalist style. In his Iceberg Theory of fiction, only the tip of the story is seen on the surface—the rest is submerged out of sight. This study surveys the scope of Hemingway’s mastery of the short story form, enabling a fuller understanding of such works as “Indian Camp,” “Big Two-Hearted River,” “The Killers,” “The Mother of a Queen,” “In Another Country,” “Hills Like White Elephants,” “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” and “The Mercenaries,” among many others. All 13 stories from his underrated Winner Take Nothing collection are evaluated in detail.

Book The Critical Reception of Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises

Download or read book The Critical Reception of Hemingway s The Sun Also Rises written by Peter L. Hays and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2011 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This History of the criticism of The Sun Also Rises shows not only how Hemingway's first major novel was received over the decades, but also how different critical modes have dominated different decades, and what, besides tenure, critics of different eras looked for in it. As such, it shows what has interested critics, how they have reinterpreted the novel, and how they have seen the characters playing different roles. Thus the novel becomes a mirror, reflecting not only Paris and Spain in 1925, but us.

Book excerpt: Volume 7 of the Cather Studies series explores Willa Cather’s iconic status and its problems within popular and literary culture. Not only are Cather’s own life and work subject to enshrinement, but as a writer, she herself often returned to the motifs of canonization and to the complex relationship between the onlooker and the idealized object. Through textual study of her published novels and her behind-the-scenes campaign and publicity writing in service of her novels, the reader comes to understand the extent to which, despite her legendary claims and commitment to privacy, Willa Cather helped to orchestrate her own iconic status.
