Book Seven Wonders of Asteroids Comets and Meteors

Download or read book Seven Wonders of Asteroids Comets and Meteors written by Ron Miller and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From earliest times, humans have wondered about the sky above them and have studied all visible objects. People began to identify differences between stars and planets, and as technology advanced with telescopes and space probes, they sought deeper understanding of the millions of bits of debris rocketing through the solar system. Scientists determined that most of these objects are left over from the creation of the planets and their moons. They classified these leftovers into categories such as asteroids, comets, and meteors. In this book, we'll explore seven wonders of asteroids, comets, and meteors. Ceres is a huge mountain-sized asteroid that orbits with other asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. Other marvels include Ganymede, the largest asteroid in the group called Earthgrazers or Near-Earth Objects, and Halley's comet, a ball of ice, that passes Earth every seventy-five or so years. We'll also explore the amazing impact that space debris can have on planets and moons. The Borealis Basin, a wondrous crater more than 5,000 miles across, formed when an asteroid collided with Mars in the ancient past. Then we will travel to the far-off Kuiper belt, where as many as 200 million icy bodies orbit, and wonder at the mystery of planetlike objects, such as Pluto and Charon. Finally, we’ll can experience a space wonder firsthand by standing outside on a night in August to watch the spectacular Perseid meteor shower fill the sky.

Book Seven Wonders of Space Technology

Download or read book Seven Wonders of Space Technology written by Fred Bortz and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From earliest times, humans have looked to the sky in wonder, and their wonder and curiosity fueled science. Ancient peoples built enormous temples and monuments to observe the sun and track the movement of stars. And as scientific knowledge expanded, technologies grew more sophisticated. Each development changed the way we viewed our place in the universe. But no technology changed our understanding more than the ability to launch scientific equipment—and human explorers—into space. In this book, we'll explore seven wonders of space technology. Scientists and engineers have built vehicles and equipment to explore the farthest reaches of the solar system. Orbiting satellites and telescopes have given us everything from more accurate weather reports to glimpses back to the beginning of the universe. International teams have built an orbiting space laboratory and are working on plans for human lunar settlements and missions to other planets. Learn about the people and the science behind these amazing advances in space technology.

Book Seven Wonders of the Universe That You Probably Took for Granted

Download or read book Seven Wonders of the Universe That You Probably Took for Granted written by C. Rene James and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the scientific mysteries behind our everyday world—from night, light and gravity to our cosmic home and wonder itself. So much of what surrounds us feels familiar and mundane—until we look closer. C. Renée James opens the Universe to fantastical contemplation in this whimsical tour of seven everyday experiences: night, light, stuff, gravity, time, home, and wonder. James introduces each of these seven wonders with a simple question that appears to be easily answered. The questions are deceptive, though. Although we need light to see, there’s much more to it than meets the eye. When you get down to the atomic level, physical things are made of almost entirely empty space—99.9% nothing. And James’s contemplation of our place in the Universe shows that it’s not just a place to hang your hat—and that there’s really nothing else like it. James’s accessible discussion uses common analogies and entertaining illustrations to explain historical discoveries and concepts such as relativity, antimatter, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Fun and edifying, Seven Wonders of the Universe That You Probably Took for Granted is an inviting introduction to secret knowledge of our everyday world.

Book The Planets Are Very Very Very Far Away A Journey Through the Amazing Scale of the Solar System

Download or read book The Planets Are Very Very Very Far Away A Journey Through the Amazing Scale of the Solar System written by Mike Vago and published by The Experiment, LLC. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solar system unfolds before your eyes in this cheeky, myth-busting book (grounded in real math)! Quick: Picture the solar system. Do you see nine planets on tidy rings around the Sun? Then you have been lied to! It’s not without reason: We have to draw the solar system that way to fit it on a place mat, or a lunch box, or into an ordinary book. But that familiar diagram is wrong about almost everything—and so this is no ordinary book. Seven double-gatefold pages open out not once but twice, capturing our planetary neighbors at scale. At a 100,000,000,000-to-1 scale, the Sun is about the size of a dime. And five feet away from the Sun, we find . . . Earth, the size of a pinhead. A hundred-billion-to-one scale is not nearly small enough to fit our solar system into a book (or onto a soccer field)! How small do we need to go? Unfold the next three spreads to find out . . .
