Book A SURFEIT OF AUNTS

Download or read book A SURFEIT OF AUNTS written by Daphne Coyne and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns life in the twenty-five years before and during the second world war. Born in 1922, my first ten years were very happy years. Things changed with the sudden death of my father. Because he was a vicar, the family had to leave the vicarage in six weeks with no home to go to and very little money. To help my mother, her three widowed sisters (the aunts) came on the scene. The only security, away from this merry-go-round of our family life, was in boarding school and then the services. My brother in the Army and I in the WRNS. I was a plotter and worked in operations rooms at several naval bases. The last one was shortly before the invasion began. I was sent to Fort Southwick, near Portsmouth. I worked here, in the underground, steel lined, plotting room of 'combined headquarters' as 'Operation Overlord' unfolded in miniature on the plotting table in front of me. When the invasion was safely under way, I was posted to 'tactical anti-submarine training' in Scotland.

Seizing the opportunity of his wife’s intervention, he demands that Rachael take his two young illegitimate children with her on her journey west; if she wants her father to remain alive. Traveling west from Brockport, New York, Rachael undertakes her first assignment from her new boss, the ranch owner. She will be required to transact business in a man’s world by overseeing the loading of supplies and freight along the train route. Her third business stop, Rock Springs, Wyoming, brings her face to face with four members of her new employer, three brothers and the ranch foreman. Overwhelmed, she unconsciously turns to one brother for security, beginning his commitment to her. During the next decade of hard work, Rachael struggles to bury her past. Her new family, the Prestons and their bunkhouse crew, give her an optimistic appreciation of life as she learns there are no social boundaries in the West. Book The Strauss Dynasty and Habsburg Vienna

Download or read book The Strauss Dynasty and Habsburg Vienna written by David Wyn Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of the Strauss family – Johann and his three sons, Johann, Josef and Eduard – enjoys enormous popular appeal. Yet existing biographies have failed to do justice to the family's true significance in nineteenth and early twentieth-century musical history. David Wyn Jones addresses this deficiency, engagingly showing that – from Johann's first engagements in the mid-1820s to the death of Eduard in 1916 – the music making of the family was at the centre of Habsburg Viennese society as it moved between dance hall, concert hall and theatre. The Strauss industry at its height was, he demonstrates, greater than any one of the individuals, with serious personal and domestic consequences including affairs, illness, rivalry and fraud. This zesty biography, spanning over a hundred years of history, brings the dynasty brilliantly to life across a large canvas as it offers fresh and revealing insights into the cultural life of Vienna as a whole.

Book Poulenc The Life in the Songs

Download or read book Poulenc The Life in the Songs written by Graham Johnson and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest modernist composers comes alive in this illuminating biography, a must-have for musicians and music-lovers alike. Francis Poulenc (1899–1963) is widely acknowledged as one of the twentieth century’s most significant masters of vocal music —solo, choral, and operatic— quite apart from his achievements in instrumental spheres. But what it cost him, and the determined bravery it took for his unusual talent to thrive, has always been underestimated. In this seminal biography, which will serve as the definitive guide to the songs, acclaimed collaborative pianist Graham Johnson shows that it is in Poulenc’s extraordinary songs, and seeing how they fit into his life —which included crippling guilt on account of his sexuality— that we discover Poulenc heart and soul. With Jeremy Sams’s vibrant new song translations, the first in over forty years, and the insight that comes from a lifetime of performing this music, Johnson provides an essential volume for singers, pianists, listeners, and readers interested in the artistic milieu of modernism in the first half of the twentieth century.

Book The Humility Imperative

Download or read book The Humility Imperative written by Dave Balter and published by Houndstooth Press. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Humility Imperative begs the question: can one be confident and have humility at the same time? In order to explore that, this book emphasizes the very personal nature of leadership. It delivers authentic, raw evidence that building anything requires constant attentiveness to interpersonal dynamics. The Humility Imperative follows entrepreneur and investor Dave Balter's journey from the sale of his fourth startup, BzzAgent, through the launch of three additional startups-Smarterer, Mylestone, and Flipside Crypto-as well as his time as both a corporate executive and as a partner in a venture capital fund. The experiences highlight the fact that while humility may be intended in one's heart, it only becomes genuine if it is reflected through the thoughts of others. The lessons are a reminder that every interaction-both professional and personal-is the lens by which your own intentions become clear. Humility is an imperative. And it lives in the eye of the beholder.
