Download or read book Settlement Morphology of Budapest written by Csapó Tamás and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of empirical research conducted by the authors, who personally surveyed the people they met on each and every street, square and public space in Budapest. It has four extensive chapters that discuss urban change and structure in Budapest and feature many rich color illustrations. The first chapter looks at the geographical circumstances impacting the city’s urban development in a historical context, as well as the evolution of its functions and demographic processes and the development of the ground plan and settlement structure. The second chapter concerns itself with the way the capital city of Hungary is built, demonstrating the horizontal homogeneity and vertical heterogeneity of development together with development types and locations in Budapest. The third chapter was written about the change in Budapest’s urban structure, especially in regard to the years after 1990. It lists the major factors influencing urban structure transformation, followed by a detailed analysis of Budapest’s functional zones. Lastly, the fourth chapter provides a detailed introduction to each capital city district, including their creation, development and functional structures.

Book Modeling Post Socialist Urbanization

Download or read book Modeling Post Socialist Urbanization written by Daniel Kiss and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Budapest’s urban development, planning, and governance between 1990 and 2010. In the face of socialist urbanization’s structural legacies, the recent radical decentralization of government and resources and the impacts of a post-socialist war of ideologies, a trend is analyzed which leads to an urbanization mostly characterized by business-dominated development projects not integrated into any grand urban design. The author claims this outcome to be typical of the development of post-socialist cities and presents it in an abstract model establishing links between particular historical background conditions and the phenomena of Budapest’s recent urbanization. With a conversation between Kees Christiaanse, Ákos Moravánszky, and the author.

Book Armenian Townscapes in Transylvania

Download or read book Armenian Townscapes in Transylvania written by Máté Tamáska and published by Böhlau Köln. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyzes and compares the architectural characteristics of four Armenian colonies from the beginning of the eighteenth to the turn of the twentieth century: Gherla/Szamosújvár, Dumbraveni/Erzsébetváros, Gheorgheni/Gyergyószentmiklós and Frumoasa/Csíkszépvíz. The Transylvanian Armenian population played a decisive role in the architecture of Transylvania, and this represents a fascinating feature in the history of Armenians in the world. The analyses compare the architecture of the colonies on four levels. The settlement's position in the network constitutes the first level. The second level comprises the structure, the building plots and street systems of the settlements. The third level consists of the analysis of the buildings. Finally, the last chapter presents the architectural-sociological interpretation of the townscapes at the turn of the twentieth century.

Book Budapest A Central European Capital

Download or read book Budapest A Central European Capital written by György Enyedi and published by *Belhaven Press. This book was released on 1992-07-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Cities series offers up-to-date authoritative and challenging profiles of the world's main urban centres. Each book blends urban history, sociology, ecology, economics, politics, transport, architecture and built environment into a fascinating portrayal of the contemporary urban scene. The series covers the major 'world cities, ' including the developed world metropolises as well as important cities in the Third World, cities in socialist countries (both industrial and Third World) and 'classic' cities like Vienna. Some 35 volumes are planned for the series, which will be concluded by a comparative volume. In this lively and authoritative study, the authors begin by tracing the historical development of Budapest over a 2000 year period, covering its emergence as a key central European capital during the middle ages and subsequently as part of the powerful Austro-Hungarian empire in the late 19th/early 20th century; and more recently its changing geopolitical role following World War II. Following the familiar World Cities series format, the book then goes on to focus on key themes such as the role of geographical location in different stages of urban development (including geopolitical factors, the Danube, tourism etc), environmental problems, influences on architecture and urban planning, demographic patterns and impact of industrialisation. The book concludes by examining Budapest's long term master plan - adopted in 1985 - from the perspective of the various alternatives for its future social and political development.

Book Retrofitting the City

Download or read book Retrofitting the City written by Stefan Bouzarovski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are responsible for three-quarters of the world s energy consumption. If we are to reduce our demands on the planet s resources how can we make our urban areas more energy efficient? One way is to refit existing buildings with more thermally efficient building materials. But such retrofitting involves significant issues of social acceptance and public participation. Retrofitting the City provides an important corrective to the assumptions that have been made concerning the ability of people and places to cope with such residential transformation. Drawing upon case studies from a number of European cities that have undergone far-reaching change in their built environments, the author shows that supposedly inadaptable people and places show a strong, if often hidden, degree of flexibility in responding to economic change and building transformation."
