Book Settlement and Burial in Apollonia and Its Area Albania

Download or read book Settlement and Burial in Apollonia and Its Area Albania written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents an analysis of data pertaining to the Archaic and Classical periods at Apollonia (Albania), one of the major Greek colonies in the Mediterranean. Conclusions are based on a long history of research and investigations that have been carried out in the form of excavations and surface survey within the city walls of Apollonia, in its necropolis, and in its chora. Part of this work is dedicated to a thorough collection and collation of published information from Apollonia, while the core of my analyses considers recent data from the systematic surface survey in its territory sponsored by the Mallakastra Regional Archaeological Project and the excavation of one of the many tumuli in its large necropolis. The approach taken here is both regional and interdisciplinary, and it is shown that only the integration of data from different disciplines and various kinds of field projects, set in a regional context, can provide us with a better understanding of life at Apollonia during the Archaic and Classical periods. The comparison of data from excavations within the city with those coming from the survey and the necropolis has been particularly useful in exploring various aspects of the social, economic, and cultural dynamics of ancient society. This study should be considered as a prolegomenon that should be followed by further analyses and explorations with contemporary techniques and methods not only within the city walls, but also in the necropolis and in the chora of the city-state.

Book The Earliest Urbanized Settlements in the Hinterland of Apollonia Albania

Download or read book The Earliest Urbanized Settlements in the Hinterland of Apollonia Albania written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the earliest inhabited settlements of the hinterland of the Greek colony at Apollonia (Albania) during the Protourban period (ca. 700 - 450 B.C). The areas of Myzeqe and Mallakastra are the geographical focus of this detailed analysis. The first chapter concentrates on the discussion of the physical landscape of these areas, and the history of archaeological research. The second chapter consists of the list of sites that are discussed in this thesis. Their fortifications, domestic architecture, and pottery are analyzed. In the third chapter a discussion of the inter-settlement and intra-settlement levels is made. The lack of burials near the native sites is noted. Trade in the hinterland of Apollonia, and appearances of imported pottery, namely Corinthian and Ionian are discussed. The fourth chapter is a survey of burial rites at Apollonia and the factors that may have influenced the Greeks to adopt the rite of tumuli.

Book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania

Download or read book The Excavation of the Prehistoric Burial Tumulus at Lofkend Albania written by Lorenc Bejko and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burial tumulus of Lofkend lies in one of the richest archaeological areas of Albania (ancient "Illyria"), home to a number of burial tumuli spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages of later prehistory. Some were robbed long ago, others were reused for modern burials; few were excavated under scientific conditions. Modern understanding of the pre- and protohistory of Illyria has largely been shaped by the contents of such burial mounds. What inspired the systematic exploration of Lofkend by UCLA was more than the promise of an unplundered necropolis; it was also a chance to revisit the significance of this tumulus and its fellows for the emergence of urbanism and complexity in ancient Illyria. In addition to artifacts, the recovery of surviving plant remains, bones, and other organic material contribute insights into the environmental and ecological history of the region.

Book Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province Results of the Projekti Arkeologjik I Shkodr s PASH

Download or read book Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province Results of the Projekti Arkeologjik I Shkodr s PASH written by Michael L. Galaty and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, very few northern Albanian archaeological sites have been surveyed and excavated. Situated beyond the reach, and allure, of the Classical Greek colonies of south-central Albania, the region has drawn less scholarly attention. But in various ways, northern Albania is just as important to the ongoing archaeological debates regarding the origins of inequality and the rise of social complexity. Some of the earliest and largest hill forts and tumuli (burial mounds) in Albania, dating to the Bronze and Iron Age, are located in Shkodër. Shkodër (Rozafa) Castle became the capital of the so-called Illyrian Kingdom, which was conquered by Rome in the early 3rd century BC. This research report, focused on the province of Shkodër, is based on five years of field and laboratory work and is the first synthetic archaeological treatment of this region. The results of the Projekti Arkeologjik i Shkodrës (or PASH) are presented here in two volumes. Volume 1 includes geological context, a literature review, historical background, and reports on the regional survey and test excavations at three settlements and three tumuli. In Volume 2, the authors describe the artifacts recovered through survey and excavation, including chipped stone, small finds, and pottery from the prehistoric, Classical, Roman, medieval, and post-medieval periods. They also present results of faunal, petrographic, chemical, carpological, and strontium isotope analyses of the artifacts. These two volumes place northern Albania--and the Shkodër Province in particular--at the forefront of archaeological research in the Balkans.

Book Memory and Nation Building

Download or read book Memory and Nation Building written by Michael L. Galaty and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory and Nation Building addresses the complex topic of collective memory, first described by sociologist Maurice Halbwachs in the first half of the 20th century. Author Michael Galaty argues that the first states appropriated traditional collective memory systems in order to form. With this in mind, he compares three Mediterranean societies – Egypt, Greece, and Albania – each of which experienced very different trajectories of state formation. Galaty attributes these differences to varying responses to collective memory in all three places through time, with climaxes in the Ottoman period, during which all three were under Ottoman control. Egypt was characterized by deeply meaningful memory tropes concerning national unity, which spanned all of Egyptian history, while Greece experienced memory fragmentation, a condition exacerbated by periods of imperial conquest. Albania adapted and assimilated when faced with foreign domination, such that an indigenous Albanian state did not form until 1912. Galaty builds a diachronic model of state formation and its relationship to memory and political control. Memory and Nation Building culminates in an analysis of modern collective memory systems and resistance to those systems, which are often framed as conflicts over “heritage”. The formation and eventual fall of the short-lived Islamic State serves as an example of extreme memory work, with lessons for other modern nations.

Book A Sanctuary in the Hora of Illyrian Apollonia

Download or read book A Sanctuary in the Hora of Illyrian Apollonia written by Jack L. Davis and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years 2004-2006, a joint team from the International Centre for Albanian Archaeology in Tirana, Albania, the Institute of Archaeology in Tirana, and the University of Cincinnati conducted excavations in the plain west of the walls of the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia, a short distance to the southwest of the modern village of Pojan. The site lies almost entirely within a complex of farm buildings known locally as Bonjaket. This volume represents the full publication of the results of three campaigns of excavation at the site. The new excavations discovered and documented a previously unknown monumental temple and have made it possible to describe for the first time the material remains of Greek rituals as practiced at the time of, or not long after, the foundation of Apollonia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tumuli were the most widespread form of monumental tombs in the ancient world. Their impact on landscape, their allurement as well as their symbolic reference to a glorious past can still be felt today. The need of supra-regional and cross-disciplinary examination of this unique phenomenon led to an international conference in Istanbul in 2009. With almost 50 scholars from 12 different countries participating, the conference entitled TumulIstanbul created links between fields of research which would not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. The proceedings of TumulIstanbul revolve around the question of the symbolic significance of burial mounds in the 1st millennium BC in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black-Sea regions, providing further insight into Kurgan neighbours from Eurasia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of Pichvnari, located to the east of the Black Sea in Georgia and one of the most important sites of ancient Colchis, the legendary land of the Golden Fleece. Greek vessels, dating from the 6th century BC onwards, and figurines and other objects illustrate the dominant influence of Greek religion and culture in this distant outpost of hellenisation. Pichvnari degenerated into swampland in the early 2nd century BC but excavation elsewhere in the region has found evidence for continuing Greek and Roman occupation until the 4th century AD. The book includes an examination of the archaeological evidence and concludes with an overview of the region's history and numerous illustrations of artefacts and archaeological remains.
