Book After the New Testament

Download or read book After the New Testament written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable diversity of Christianity during the formative years of the first three centuries has become a plain, even natural, "fact" for most ancient historians. However, until now there has been no source book of primary texts that reveals the many varieties of Christian beliefs, practices, ethics, experiences, confrontations, and self-understandings. To help readers recognize and experience the rich diversity of the early Christian movement, After the New Testament provides a wide range of texts, both "orthodox" and "heterodox". It includes such works as the Apostolic Fathers, the writings of Nag Hammadi, early pseudepigrapha, martyrologies, anti-Jewish tractates, heresiologies, canon lists, church orders, Liturgical texts, and theological treatises. In addition, rather than including only fragments of texts, this collection provides substantial sections -- entire documents wherever possible -- organized under social and historical rubrics.

"Pearson is one of the most thorough and perceptive scholars in Gnostics studies today. The topics he deals with here are current and important, and no doubt will remain so for some time. This volume is a must for everyone in the field." ——Douglas M. Parrott, University of California, Riverside "Uniformly excellent contributions on the subject.... Students and teachers will benefit from Pearson's insightful and creative observations." ——Marvin Meyer, Chapman College

Book Paradise Reconsidered in Gnostic Mythmaking

Download or read book Paradise Reconsidered in Gnostic Mythmaking written by Tuomas Rasimus and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new understanding of Sethianism and the origins of Gnosticism by examining the mythology in and social reality behind a group of texts to which certain leaders of the early church occasionally attached the label ‘Ophite.’ In the unique Ophite mythology, which rewrites the Genesis paradise story and is attested, for example, in Irenaeus’ Adversus haereses 1.30, The Apocryphon of John and On the Origin of the World, the snake’s advice to eat of the tree of knowledge is considered positive, the creator and his angels are turned into demonic beasts and the true Godhead is presented as an androgynous heavenly projection of Adam and Eve. It is argued that Hans-Martin Schenke’s influential model of the ‘Sethian system’ only reveals part of a larger whole to which the Ophite material belongs as an important and organic component.

Book A Guide to Early Jewish Texts and Traditions in Christian Transmission

Download or read book A Guide to Early Jewish Texts and Traditions in Christian Transmission written by Gabriele Boccaccini and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish culture of the Hellenistic and early Roman periods established a basis for all monotheistic religions, but its main sources have been preserved to a great degree through Christian transmission. This Guide is devoted to problems of preservation, reception, and transformation of Jewish texts and traditions of the Second Temple period in the many Christian milieus from the ancient world to the late medieval era. It approaches this corpus not as an artificial collection of reconstructed texts--a body of hypothetical originals--but rather from the perspective of the preserved materials, examined in their religious, social, and political contexts. It also considers the other, non-Christian, channels of the survival of early Jewish materials, including Rabbinic, Gnostic, Manichaean, and Islamic. This unique project brings together scholars from many different fields in order to map the trajectories of early Jewish texts and traditions among diverse later cultures. It also provides a comprehensive and comparative introduction to this new field of study while bridging the gap between scholars of early Judaism and of medieval Christianity.

Book Exploring the Scripturesque

Download or read book Exploring the Scripturesque written by Robert Alan Kraft and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays span about a third of a century and include both previously published and some unpublished studies by Robert A. Kraft which focus on interfaces between Jewish materials and the worlds in which they were transmitted and/or perceived, especially Christian contexts. The initial section on general context and methodology is followed by several detailed studies by way of example. The final section touches on some related issues involving Philonic and other texts. The primary concern is with "scripturesque" materials and traditions, whether they later became canonical or not, that seem to have been respected as “scriptural” by some individuals or communities in the period prior to (or apart from) the development of an exclusivistic canonical consciousness in some Jewish and Christian circles.

Book The Embroidered Bible Studies in Biblical Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha in Honour of Michael E Stone

Download or read book The Embroidered Bible Studies in Biblical Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha in Honour of Michael E Stone written by Lorenzo DiTommaso and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Festschrift contains forty-one original essays and six tribute papers in honour of Michael E. Stone, Gail Levin de Nur Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies and Professor Emeritus of Armenian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The volume’s main theme is Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, envisioned in its broadest sense: apocryphal texts, traditions, and themes from the Second-Temple period to the High Middle Ages, in Judaism, Christianity and, to a lesser extent, Islam. Most essays present new or understudied texts based on fresh manuscript evidence; the others are thematic in approach. The volume’s scope and focus reflect those of Professor Stone’s scholarship, without a special emphasis on Armenian studies.

Book The A to Z of Prophets in Islam and Judaism

Download or read book The A to Z of Prophets in Islam and Judaism written by Scott B. Noegel and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both traditions recognize and draw theological and historical lessons from some of the same narrative sources, but this is the first comparative resource to provide interdisciplinary coverage of the history and textual sources associated with prophets and prophecy. This thorough treatment of a difficult and increasingly controversial subject area will encourage and cultivate knowledge and understanding. Entries are drawn from five main fields: 1. Ancient Near Eastern Studies 2. Bible and Biblical Studies 3. Judaism and Jewish Studies 4. The Quran and Quranic Studies 5. Islam and Islamic Studies The A to Z of Prophets in Islam and Judaism treat each entry as a compilation of relevant data culled from these different traditions in order to take the reader beyond the expected parameters of research. Originally envisioned as an initial resource for students of comparative religion, the extensive chronology, bibliography, and the overall accessibility of the passages make the book suitable for a much wider audience.
