Book excerpt: An eminent psychologist offers a major new theory of human cognition: movement, not language, is the foundation of thought When we try to think about how we think, we can't help but think of words. Indeed, some have called language the stuff of thought. But pictures are remembered far better than words, and describing faces, scenes, and events defies words. Anytime you take a shortcut or play chess or basketball or rearrange your furniture in your mind, you've done something remarkable: abstract thinking without words. In Mind in Motion, psychologist Barbara Tversky shows that spatial cognition isn't just a peripheral aspect of thought, but its very foundation, enabling us to draw meaning from our bodies and their actions in the world. Our actions in real space get turned into mental actions on thought, often spouting spontaneously from our bodies as gestures. Spatial thinking underlies creating and using maps, assembling furniture, devising football strategies, designing airports, understanding the flow of people, traffic, water, and ideas. Spatial thinking even underlies the structure and meaning of language: why we say we push ideas forward or tear them apart, why we're feeling up or have grown far apart. Like Thinking, Fast and Slow before it, Mind in Motion gives us a new way to think about how--and where--thinking takes place.

Book Managing Data in Motion

Download or read book Managing Data in Motion written by April Reeve and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Data in Motion describes techniques that have been developed for significantly reducing the complexity of managing system interfaces and enabling scalable architectures. Author April Reeve brings over two decades of experience to present a vendor-neutral approach to moving data between computing environments and systems. Readers will learn the techniques, technologies, and best practices for managing the passage of data between computer systems and integrating disparate data together in an enterprise environment. The average enterprise's computing environment is comprised of hundreds to thousands computer systems that have been built, purchased, and acquired over time. The data from these various systems needs to be integrated for reporting and analysis, shared for business transaction processing, and converted from one format to another when old systems are replaced and new systems are acquired. The management of the "data in motion" in organizations is rapidly becoming one of the biggest concerns for business and IT management. Data warehousing and conversion, real-time data integration, and cloud and "big data" applications are just a few of the challenges facing organizations and businesses today. Managing Data in Motion tackles these and other topics in a style easily understood by business and IT managers as well as programmers and architects. - Presents a vendor-neutral overview of the different technologies and techniques for moving data between computer systems including the emerging solutions for unstructured as well as structured data types - Explains, in non-technical terms, the architecture and components required to perform data integration - Describes how to reduce the complexity of managing system interfaces and enable a scalable data architecture that can handle the dimensions of "Big Data"

  • Author : Tony Hiss
  • Publisher : Knopf
  • Release : 2011-08-17
  • ISBN : 0307779734
  • Pages : 451 pages

Download or read book In Motion written by Tony Hiss and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this extraordinarily wide-ranging, insightful, and revelatory book, Tony Hiss—the much-praised author of The Experience of Place—delves into a unique and instantly recognizable (though previously undescribed) experience that can happen to us when we travel, a special understanding and ability that can leave us feeling exhilarated. He illustrates how throughout human history—from our ancestors walking upright for the first time to astronauts walking on the moon—we have repeatedly availed ourselves of this seemingly elusive quality, which he calls “Deep Travel.” The sensation of Deep Travel can overtake us, Hiss says, whenever we tap into a sophisticated, wide-awake awareness we all possess. With a wealth of examples—from evocative accounts of his own journeys to celebrated travel writing across the centuries—Hiss identifies and rescues this powerful capacity and sets out simple techniques for accessing it no matter where we are. And this is only a jumping-off point for an original and penetrating explanation of how Deep Travel radically alters our perception of not only where we are but also when we are, by placing us in an “extended present,” and how it acts as an open-sesame to enlarge and enrich the world around us. Going even further, he investigates how we can remain absolutely still but travel in time itself, as our horizons move backward to include layers of nature and human culture that have gone before, or project us forward to consider what our actions will mean to those who will inhabit our spot on earth a few generations from now. Whether travel takes you around the corner or around the world, once you’ve read In Motion, no journey will ever feel the same. From the Hardcover edition.

Book Our Thoughts Create Our Experience

Download or read book Our Thoughts Create Our Experience written by Raymond Simms LPC MA and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-07-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the whole man and how to align the body, soul and spirit as one. Your purpose and calling are tied together. As you discover your purpose, you will then discover your calling. Your purpose is inside, and your calling is outward. This book will assist you in the process of preparing first the foundation which begins in the soul. The reason people are so unhappy in what they do is that they have not discovered their God-given purpose inwardly, which is revealed by the Holy Spirit. Our purpose is internal and eternal; our souls are also internal and eternal. God-given purpose has to do solely with man's soul. It first begins with the soul, then outward to one's calling. It is important to first develop the soul's purpose as the soul houses the character of the man. Man's character will affect positively or negatively man's calling. This is the process that the Holy Spirit takes God's people through as He did with Jesus in the wilderness to test His character; that is, His soul.

Book Words in Motion

  • Author : Carol Gluck

Download or read book Words in Motion written by Carol Gluck and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the premise that words have the power to make worlds, each essay in this book follows a word as it travels around the globe and across time. Scholars from five disciplines address thirteen societies to highlight the social and political life of words in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The approach is consciously experimental, in that rigorously tracking specific words in specific settings frequently leads in unexpected directions and alters conventional depictions of global modernity. Such words as security in Brazil, responsibility in Japan, community in Thailand, and hijāb in France changed the societies in which they moved even as the words were changed by them. Some words threatened to launch wars, as injury did in imperial Britain’s relations with China in the nineteenth century. Others, such as secularism, worked in silence to agitate for political change in twentieth-century Morocco. Words imposed or imported from abroad could be transformed by those who wielded them to oppose the very powers that first introduced them, as happened in Turkey, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Taken together, this selection of fourteen essays reveals commonality as well as distinctiveness across modern societies, making the world look different from the interdisciplinary and transnational perspective of “words in motion.” Contributors. Book Rhetorica in Motion

Download or read book Rhetorica in Motion written by Eileen E. Schell and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-01-31 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetorica in Motion is the first collected work to investigate feminist rhetorical research methods in both contemporary and historical contexts. The contributors analyze the decision-making processes and methodologies employed in deciphering the origins, meanings, theories, workings, and manifestations of feminist rhetoric. The volume examines familiar themes, such as archival, literary, and online research, but also looks to other areas of rhetoric, such as disability studies; gerontology/aging studies; Latina/o, queer, and transgender studies; performance studies; and transnational feminisms in both the United States and larger geopolitical spaces. Rhetorica in Motion incorporates previous views of feminist research, outlines a set of principles that guides current methods, and develops models for undertaking future inquiry, including working as individuals or balancing the dynamics of group research. The text explores how feminist research embodies what has come before and reflects what researchers, institutions, and instructors bring to it and what it brings to them. Underlying the discovery of this volume is the understanding that feminist rhetoric is in constant motion in a dynamic that resists definition.

Book Maghrebs in Motion

Download or read book Maghrebs in Motion written by Suzanne Gauch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring films made in Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria from 1985 to 2009, Suzanne Gauch illustrates how late post-independence and early twenty-first century North African cinema prefigured many of the transformations in perception and relation that stunned both participants and onlookers during the remarkable uprisings of the 2011 Arab Spring. Through multifaceted examinations of key films by nine filmmakers--Farida Benlyazid, Mohamed Chouikh, Nacer Khemir, Nabil Ayouch, Ly s Salem, Nadia El Fani, Tariq Teguia, Faouzi Bensa di, and Nejib Belkadhi--Gauch delineates the shifting relation of politics to film in the era of neoliberal globalization. Each work, she argues, taps the power inherent in cinema to destabilize patterns of perception and judgment while taking film's role as popular entertainment in new directions. Highlighting how each film taps into the mobility at the core of cinema to break through the boundaries that have long circumscribed filmmaking from North Africa, Gauch shows how this cinema continues to forge and reflect unexpected trajectories for itself and its audiences.

Book What Set Me Free The Story That Inspired the Major Motion Picture Brian Banks

Download or read book What Set Me Free The Story That Inspired the Major Motion Picture Brian Banks written by Brian Banks and published by Atria Books. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *The story that inspired the film Brian Banks* Discover the unforgettable and inspiring true story of a young man who was wrongfully convicted as a teenager and imprisoned for more than five years, only to emerge with his spirit unbroken and determined to achieve his dream of playing in the NFL. At age sixteen, Brian Banks was a nationally recruited All-American Football player, ranked eleventh in the nation as a linebacker. Before his seventeenth birthday, he was in jail, awaiting trial for a heinous crime he did not commit. Although Brian was innocent, his attorney advised him that as a young black man accused of rape, he stood no chance of winning his case at trial. Especially since he would be tried as an adult. Facing a possible sentence of forty-one years to life, Brian agreed to take a plea deal—and a judge sentenced him to six years in prison. At first, Brian was filled with fear, rage, and anger as he reflected on the direction his life had turned and the unjust system that had imprisoned him. Brian was surrounded by darkness, until he had epiphany that would change his life forever. From that moment on, he made the choice to shed the bitterness and anger he felt, and focus only on the things he had the power to control. He approached his remaining years in prison with a newfound resolve, studying spirituality, improving his social and writing skills, and taking giant leaps on his journey toward enlightenment. When Brian emerged from prison with five years of parole still in front of him, he was determined to rebuild his life and finally prove his innocence. Three months before his parole was set to expire, armed with a shocking recantation from his accuser and the help of the California Innocence Project, the truth about his unjust incarceration came out and he was exonerated. Finally free, Brian sought to recapture a dream once stripped away: to play for the NFL. And at age twenty-eight, he made that dream come true. Perfect for fans of Just Mercy, I Beat the Odds, and Infinite Hope, this powerful memoir is a deep dive into the injustices of the American justice system, a soul-stirring celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, and an inspiring call to hold fast to our dreams.
