Book The Obvious Choice

Download or read book The Obvious Choice written by Mike Teke and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is driven by ambition, dreams, expectations, wishes and desires. We all believe we are the obvious choice to be selected, noted, identified, appointed or anointed. We may think and believe we are the obvious choice in many areas of our lives, but the reality is that this is not the case. When your boss informs you that you are not getting that role you assumed was in the bag (and you'd already informed your family and friends that it was yours – and had even bought the attire to go with it), you ask: what happened? What happened when you were bypassed for the lead role in a project? You believed in your potential and you believed that everyone in your organisation and circle saw you as the main person, the leader or the 'go-to person', and yet you were bypassed and someone else in your team was selected. You were the obvious choice, weren't you? Think of the assignment you prepared, the one you believed was the perfect presentation and would earn you a distinction, and then you flunked it. Where did you go wrong? Mike Teke's book is about showing you that you can be the obvious choice, in business or in life, but that being the obvious choice does not simply fall from any tree. Without focus, diligence and a strong work ethic you are unlikely to succeed, no matter how much you think you're entitled to. The Obvious Choice debunks myths and prevailing negative mindsets. And, most usefully, it provides guidelines and lessons to prepare you for the journey to leadership greatness, to become the obvious choice in whatever setting or endeavour the universe presents. Mike Teke has gained extensive experience in people management, business management and leadership at BHP and Impala, and as CEO of Optimum Coal Holdings. Today he is the CEO of Seriti Resources Holdings and the Chairperson and controlling shareholder of the Masimong Group. He serves as Chair/Non-Executive Director at the Anchor Group and Rolfes Group, and is the past President of the Minerals Council South Africa. In 2023 he was inducted into the SA Mining Hall of Fame and appointed as Professor of Practice at the University of Johannesburg.

Book excerpt: As a man thinks within himself, so he is. Have you ever wondered why some people do phenomenally well and others seem to merely exist? Why do some pilot their lives with great resilience, while others are derailed by suicide or other debilitating thoughts or behaviors? Success is not based on the things you do; it is based on your state of being. The higher your emotional intelligence is, the higher your success rate will be. Self-mastery is about learning how to pilot your life with such accuracy that you will no longer zigzag through life, but lead a course that will guide you straight to destiny. “Self-Mastery: The Lost Key to Living an Overcoming and Fulfilling Life grabs your attention and raises important dialogue on transformation. Though most of us have an acute awareness of the goals we want to achieve, we have little insight into how we respond to questions central to successful goal attainment. What is a realistic goal? Can we turn intentions to actions? Why do we need a support system? It is within this context that this volume identifies a series of actionable strategies to push readers to master self-control and consequently optimize goal progress.

Book Routledge International Handbook of Self Control in Health and Well Being

Download or read book Routledge International Handbook of Self Control in Health and Well Being written by Denise de Ridder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to prioritise long-term goals above short-term gratifications is crucial to living a healthy and happy life. We are bombarded with temptations, whether from fast-food or faster technologies, but the psychological capacity to manage our lives within such a challenging environment has far-reaching implications for the well-being not only of the individual, but also society as a whole. The Routledge International Handbook of Self-Control in Health and Wellbeing is the first comprehensive handbook to map this burgeoning area of research by applying it to health outcomes and personal well-being. Including contributions from leading scholars worldwide, the book incorporates new research findings that suggest that simply inhibiting our immediate impulses isn’t the whole story; there may be more options to improve self-control than simply by suppressing the ego. Divided into six coherent sections, the book provides an overview of the research base before discussing a range of interventions to help improve self-control in different contexts, from smoking or drinking too much to developing self-control over aggression or spending money. The only definitive handbook on this far-reaching topic, this essential work will appeal to researchers and students across health and social psychology, as well as related health sciences.

Book Psychology Serving Humanity Proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology

Download or read book Psychology Serving Humanity Proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology written by Saths Cooper and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes collecting the key proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology, the first to be held in Africa in the 123 years of its history. The theme of the conference was "Psychology Serving Humanity", a recognition of psychology's unfulfilled mission in the majority world and a reflection of what that world requires from psychology. Mainstream Psychology finds its largest number of exponents and leading personalities in the high income countries of the global West. The Other Psychologies, referred to by different names, are scattered across the rest of the world. Some of the names of these other forms of Psychology include indigenous Psychology. The main driver of indigenous and other forms of non-mainstream Psychology is the endeavour to embed the discipline in the dynamics of local societies. Psychology has entered an interesting era, however. While the dominant philosophy underpinning the discipline remains Western, Psychology in the majority world in 2000s may have reached a tipping point. It took over a hundred years but the 2004 and 2012 International Congresses of Psychology held in China and South Africa heralded a newfound possibility for the discipline. There is an opening of the field to potentially new thought and forms of the practice of Psychology. These proceedings are published in the hope that all psychologists, especially those located in well-resourced institutions in the West, confront the divided reality that characterizes Psychology so as to creatively consider the opportunity opened up by the growing field at the peripheries. Care was taken when assembling both conference and proceedings to ensure that the entire international psychological community was represented. Volume One contains contributions to Majority World Psychology. Volume Two contains contributions to Western Psychology.

Book Love Or Greatness Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Love Or Greatness Routledge Revivals written by Roslyn Wallach Bologh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, first published in 1990, reissues the first thorough examination of the essentially masculine nature of Max Weber's social and political thinking. Through a detailed examination of his central texts, the author demonstrates Weber's masculine reading of 'social life' and shows how his work advocates a masculine form of life that poses a challenge to contemporary women and to feminism. In particular, she addresses the patriarchal implications of Weber's belief in the need to relegate the ethic of brotherly love to a private sphere in order to make possible rational action and the achievement of greatness in the public sphere.
