  • Author : Nicole R. Fleetwood
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2015-07-15
  • ISBN : 0813575257
  • Pages : 119 pages

Download or read book On Racial Icons written by Nicole R. Fleetwood and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What meaning does the American public attach to images of key black political, social, and cultural figures? Considering photography’s role as a means of documenting historical progress, what is the representational currency of these images? How do racial icons “signify”? Nicole R. Fleetwood’s answers to these questions will change the way you think about the next photograph that you see depicting a racial event, black celebrity, or public figure. In On Racial Icons, Fleetwood focuses a sustained look on photography in documenting black public life, exploring the ways in which iconic images function as celebrations of national and racial progress at times or as a gauge of collective racial wounds in moments of crisis. Offering an overview of photography’s ability to capture shifting race relations, Fleetwood spotlights in each chapter a different set of iconic images in key sectors of public life. She considers flash points of racialized violence in photographs of Trayvon Martin and Emmett Till; the political, aesthetic, and cultural shifts marked by the rise of pop stars such as Diana Ross; and the power and precarity of such black sports icons as Serena Williams and LeBron James; and she does not miss Barack Obama and his family along the way. On Racial Icons is an eye-opener in every sense of the phrase. Images from the book. (http://rutgerspress.rutgers.edu/pages/Fleetwood.aspx)

Book Martin McLean Middle School Queen

Download or read book Martin McLean Middle School Queen written by Alyssa Zaczek and published by Union Square + ORM. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “fun, inspiring, and delightful” debut, a seventh grader finds his voice—and his inner diva—as he navigates friendship, family, first crushes and more (School Library Journal). Seventh-grader Martin McLean has always been surrounded by people who can express themselves. His mother is an artist, his colorful Tío Billy works in theater, and his best friends Carmen and Pickle are outgoing charmers. But Martin can only find the right words when he’s answering a problem at a Mathletes competition—until his tío introduces him to the world of drag. In a swirl of sequins and stilettos, Martin creates his fabulous drag queen alter ego, Lottie León. As Lottie, he is braver than he’s ever been; but as Martin, he doesn’t have the guts to tell anyone outside of his family about her. Not Carmen and Pickle, not his fellow Mathletes, and definitely not Chris, an eighth-grader who gives Martin butterflies. When Martin discovers that his first-ever drag show is the same night as an important Mathletes tournament, he must find a way to pull off both appearances—and channel his inner drag superstar.

Book The Pragmatics of Politeness

Download or read book The Pragmatics of Politeness written by Geoffrey Leech and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This readable book presents a new general theoretical understanding of politeness. It offers an account of a wide range of politeness phenomena in English, illustrated by hundreds of examples of actual language use taken largely from authentic British and American sources. Building on his earlier pioneering work on politeness, Geoffrey Leech takes a pragmatic approach that is based on the controversial notion that politeness is communicative altruism. Leech's 1983 book, Principles of Pragmatics, introduced the now widely-accepted distinction between pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic aspects of politeness; this book returns to the pragmalinguistic side, somewhat neglected in recent work. Drawing on neo-Gricean thinking, Leech rejects the prevalent view that it is impossible to apply the terms 'polite' or 'impolite' to linguistic phenomena. Leech covers all major speech acts that are either positively or negatively associated with politeness, such as requests, apologies, compliments, offers, criticisms, good wishes, condolences, congratulations, agreement, and disagreement. Additional chapters deal with impoliteness and the related phenomena of irony ("mock politeness") and banter ("mock impoliteness"), and with the role of politeness in the learning of English as a second language. A final chapter takes a fascinating look at more than a thousand years of history of politeness in the English language.

Book Conversational Routine

Download or read book Conversational Routine written by Florian Coulmas and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses the notion of 'conversational routine', and explores the characteristics of some of the more prepatterned, formulaic, and conventionalized aspects of conversational activity from a variety of perspectives. In his preface, Coulmas claims conversational interaction has its own rules, different from a linguist's notion of 'rule', and that 'conversational rules and routines purport to structure and make possible both the predictable and the non-predictable aspects of conversation' (p. x). Hence the importance of this relatively unexplored side of conversational patterning. Of the thirteen papers included here, three have been previously published in academic journals; the rest are new. Half the authors are European, half are North American; and their disciplines range through linguistics, English, educational linguistics, language teaching, sociology, and psycholinguistics. -- From http://www.jstor.org (Feb. 13, 2015).
