Book Service Learning and the Liberal Arts

Download or read book Service Learning and the Liberal Arts written by Mark D. Gearan and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the connections between service-learning and a liberal arts education? That is the central question of this volume and scholars from a variety of disciplines-chemistry, economics, education, philosophy, political science, psychology, public policy, religious studies, and sociology-answer it here. The scholars collected by Craig A. Rimmerman ground their essays in a positive assumption about the importance of service-learning in contributing to students' moral, ethical, and social development within the broader context of a liberal arts education. The contributors engage in the critique of service and then respond to that critique within the context of their individual chapters. Readers will have a better understanding of what does and does not work in and out of the classroom and why. The practical appeal of this volume lies in the fact that other teachers and students who are interested in both developing their own service-learning courses and connecting those courses to broader issues of citizenship, democracy, theories of justice, ethics, and morality can find advice and applications of successful service-learning endeavors within it. This seventh volume in the Outreach Scholarship book series contributes a unique discussion of how service learning functions as a critical cornerstone of outreach scholarship. The sections and chapters of this book marshal evidence in support of the idea that undergraduate service learning, infused throughout the curriculum and coupled with outreach scholarship, is an integral means through which higher education can engage people and institutions of the communities of this nation in a manner that perpetuate civil society. The editors, through this series of models of service learning, make a powerful argument for the necessity of "engaged institutions".

Book In Defense of a Liberal Education

Download or read book In Defense of a Liberal Education written by Fareed Zakaria and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CNN host and best-selling author Fareed Zakaria argues for a renewed commitment to the world’s most valuable educational tradition. The liberal arts are under attack. The governors of Florida, Texas, and North Carolina have all pledged that they will not spend taxpayer money subsidizing the liberal arts, and they seem to have an unlikely ally in President Obama. While at a General Electric plant in early 2014, Obama remarked, "I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree." These messages are hitting home: majors like English and history, once very popular and highly respected, are in steep decline. "I get it," writes Fareed Zakaria, recalling the atmosphere in India where he grew up, which was even more obsessed with getting a skills-based education. However, the CNN host and best-selling author explains why this widely held view is mistaken and shortsighted. Zakaria eloquently expounds on the virtues of a liberal arts education—how to write clearly, how to express yourself convincingly, and how to think analytically. He turns our leaders' vocational argument on its head. American routine manufacturing jobs continue to get automated or outsourced, and specific vocational knowledge is often outdated within a few years. Engineering is a great profession, but key value-added skills you will also need are creativity, lateral thinking, design, communication, storytelling, and, more than anything, the ability to continually learn and enjoy learning—precisely the gifts of a liberal education. Zakaria argues that technology is transforming education, opening up access to the best courses and classes in a vast variety of subjects for millions around the world. We are at the dawn of the greatest expansion of the idea of a liberal education in human history.

Book The Future of Service Learning

Download or read book The Future of Service Learning written by Jean R. Strait and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a new generation of practitioners engages with service learning, at a time when higher education faces questions about learning outcomes and costs, and in the context of such issues as globalization and the environment, this book poses important questions about practice, institutional sustainability, and future directions. Among these are:What counts as service learning? What value does it bring to institutions? Is it appropriate for all students? How is globalization impacting service learning? Divided into three thematic parts, this book successively covers institutional and administrative issues; service learning as a springboard for research; and presents new practices that address emerging challenges and changing student populations. The contributors review how different institutional types have structured their service learning activities; address the issue of centralization or decentralization; propose better ways to form community partnerships; consider promotion and tenure implications; postulate framing service-learning and community engagement as scholarship; and examine service-learning as a springboard for research. Further chapters offer a new blueprint for funding to achieve sustainability; examples of international service learning from a European perspective; a case study and framework for using on-line formats to extend the reach of a program; raise the urgent issue of the experiences and contributions of underrepresented students; and present the rationale and processes for developing effective student-led evaluation of programs.

Book Student Perspectives of Service learning at a Private Liberal Arts College

Download or read book Student Perspectives of Service learning at a Private Liberal Arts College written by Maribeth Iona Wright and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Service-learning provides a tool for higher education institutions to focus on student learning and development, while contributing to the needs of communities and society. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning students made of their service-learning experiences and how these experiences contributed to student learning and self-awareness. This understanding clarified connections students made between academic achievement, self-awareness, life experiences, and service-learning. This study was conducted at Central College, a four-year, liberal arts college, in Pella, Iowa. The participants were enrolled in a psychology course where service-learning was integrated into course requirements. The data collection methods utilized were a combination of focus group interviews, individual in-depth interviews, and document analysis (student journals). Students shared the following elements were key to their service-learning experiences and contributed to their learning and self-awareness: structured reflection, articulated purposes and goals, concrete experiences to coincide with course material, the role of the professor, and the interaction and establishment of relationships with others. The experiences that students had involving service played a role in their learning and self-development. These experiences became an intertwined web connected to each other, all contributing to how students made connections between life experiences, academic achievement, self-awareness and service-learning. Students learned from their actual lived service-learning experiences. These experiences provided a direct link between learning of course material and actual application of what they learned to their service site. Through service-learning, students made connections with their personal and intellectual development. The emotional power of these service-learning experiences helped students connect with what was occurring in the classroom; therefore, learning was enhanced. It became a more holistic learning environment engaging students' minds, as well as their hearts. Students developed a better sense of self-awareness when challenged to interact with others in diverse environments. Exposure and experiences through service-learning provided opportunities for students to evaluate their views, morals, and beliefs, as well as future career and personal goals. Service-learning is an avenue where practical and academic knowledge become integrated. It is through this integration that higher education professionals can foster successful and holistic learning environments for students.

Book Fostering the Liberal Arts in the 21st Century Community College

This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberal arts education is one of the founding missions of community colleges. However, it has drifted toward vocational training to such an extent that the dominant narrative of the 21st-century community college portrays a job (re)training center more than an educational institution. This volume offers a timely, much-needed, and persuasive argument for the importance of a liberal arts education, particularly in the humanities, for all students attending a public, comprehensive community college. Download or read book Curriculum by Design written by Mary Thomas Crane and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how a team of colleagues at Boston College took an unusual approach (working with a design consultancy) to renewing their core and in the process energized administrators, faculty, and students to view liberal arts education as an ongoing process of innovation. It aims to provide insight into what they did and why they did it and to provide a candid account of what has worked and what has not worked. Although all institutions are different, they believe their experiences can provide guidance to others who want to change their general education curriculum or who are being asked to teach core or general education courses in new ways. The book also includes short essays by a number of faculty colleagues who have been teaching in BC’s new innovative core courses, providing practical advice about the challenges of trying interdisciplinary teaching, team teaching, project-or problem-based learning, intentional reflection, and other new structures and pedagogies for the first time. It will also address some of the nuts and bolts issues they have encountered when trying to create structures to make curriculum change sustainable over time and to foster ongoing innovation.

Book Redesigning Liberal Education

Download or read book Redesigning Liberal Education written by William Moner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redesigning liberal education requires both pragmatic approaches to discover what works and radical visions of what is possible. The future of liberal education in the United States, in its current form, is fraught but full of possibility. Today's institutions are struggling to maintain viability, sustain revenue, and assert value in the face of rising costs. But we should not abandon the model of pragmatic liberal learning that has made America's colleges and universities the envy of the world. Instead, Redesigning Liberal Education argues, we owe it to students to reform liberal education in ways that put broad and measurable student learning as the highest priority. Written by experts in higher education, the book is organized into two sections. The first section focuses on innovations at 13 institutions: Brown University, College of the Holy Cross, Connecticut College, Elon University, Florida International University, George Mason University, Georgetown University, Lasell College, Northeastern University, Rollins College, Smith College, Susquehanna University, and the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. Chapters about these institutions consider the vast spectrum of opportunities and challenges currently faced by students, faculty, staff, and administrators, while also offering "radical visions" of the future of liberal education in the United States. Accompanying vision chapters written by some of the foremost leaders in higher education touch on a wide array of subjects and themes, from artificial intelligence and machines to the role that human dispositions, mindsets, resilience, and time play in how we guide students to ideas for bringing playful concepts of creativity and openness into our work. Ultimately, Redesigning Liberal Education reveals how humanizing forces, including critical thinking, collaboration, cross-cultural competencies, resilience, and empathy, can help drive our world. This uplifting collection is a celebration of the innovative work being done to achieve the promise of a valuable, engaging, and practical undergraduate liberal education. Isis Artze-Vega, Denise S.
