Download or read book The Land Marks of Snake Poison Literature written by Vincent Richards and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land-Marks of Snake Poison Literature: Being a Review of the More Important Researches Into the Nature of Snake-Poisons The main objects of the publication of this sketch, which in part originally appeared in separate papers, are to assist future investigators in discovering what has already been done to throw light upon the difficult subject of which it treats, so that their time may not be wasted in useless investigations and to prevent an unnecessary and reckless sacrifice of animal life. Experiments performed upon the lower animals, either in ignorance of what has already been accomplished, or out of mere scientific curiosity, are alike inexcusable. But, unfortunately, owing to the want of some such little work as this, investigators have sometimes unconsciously travelled over the same ground, only to prove that which had already been placed beyond doubt. An old friend once remarked to the author that he thought the conduct of these researches was a useless expenditure of time and labour, for, said he, "Contra vim motris non herbula crescit in hortis." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Snake Poisons, Their Nature and Effects The following is an attempt to present in a concise form the chief features of snake-poisoning as seen in India. The object that has been kept in view has been to define, as closely as possible, the conditions on which the mortality from snake-bite depends, both as regards the physiological nature of the poisoning process, and the relations between the reptiles and their victims, so as to indicate the way in which we should best proceed with the hope of diminishing the fearful mortality that exists. The observations were made by the author in India under the auspices of the Government. It was during the experiments made for the purpose of finding out the exact cause of the fatal results - one of the first steps that must be taken whenever a method of treatment is sought - that the great and numerous differences in the effects of the various poisons became manifest. Download or read book About Method written by Jutta Schickore and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists’ views on what makes an experiment successful have developed dramatically throughout history. Different criteria for proper experimentation were privileged at different times, entirely new criteria for securing experimental results emerged, and the meaning of commitment to experimentation altered. In About Method, Schickore captures this complex trajectory of change from 1660 to the twentieth century through the history of snake venom research. As experiments with poisonous snakes and venom were both challenging and controversial, the experimenters produced very detailed accounts of their investigations, which go back three hundred years—making venom research uniquely suited for such a long-term study. By analyzing key episodes in the transformation of venom research, Schickore is able to draw out the factors that have shaped methods discourse in science. About Method shows that methodological advancement throughout history has not been simply a steady progression toward better, more sophisticated and improved methodologies of experimentation. Rather, it was a progression in awareness of the obstacles and limitations that scientists face in developing strategies to probe the myriad unknown complexities of nature. The first long-term history of this development and of snake venom research, About Method offers a major contribution to integrated history and philosophy of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Snake-Poison Its Action and its Antidote Case Studies - Successful and unsuccessful Historical Text on treatment of snake bites Since the method of treating snakebite-poisoning by hypodermic injections of strychnine, discovered by the writer and published but a few years ago, has already been adopted by the medical profession throughout the Australian colonies, and practised even by laymen in cases of urgency with much success, it has been repeatedly suggested to him that the subject calls for further elucidation at his hands; that the morbid processes engendered by the snake venom and the modus operandi of the antidote should be explained by him in a manner satisfying the demands of science, and at the same time within the grasp of the intelligent, moderately educated layman. When the latter, in a case of pressing emergency and in the absence of medical aid, is called upon to administer a potent drug in heroic doses, the aggregate of which would be attended by serious consequences in the absence of the deadly ophidian virus, an intelligent insight alone into the process he is about to initiate will give him that decision and promptitude of action, on the full exercise of which on his part it may depend whether, within a few hours, a valuable and to him probably dear life will be saved or lost.
