Book Sermons Addressed to Individuals Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons Addressed to Individuals IT is often asserted that sermons as a rule make very poor reading Somehow they seem to lose their human interest when they pass into the printed page and the personality of the preacher is withdrawn. Such, of course, is not always the case, as the sermons of Spurgeon, Phillips Brooks, and Robertson of Brighton clearly testify; but it must be admitted that these are the exception, not the rule. Most sermonic literature is dry reading, or if it be the reported verbatim utterance of the preacher - and this is not literature - the colloquial isms and direct style of address have a tendency to become irritating to the reader. This tendency is especially noticeable if reported sermons are issued in permanent form. With these considerations in view something in the nature of an experiment is being attempted in the issue of the present volume. The sermons included herein are not literature, they are ex tempore speech; they are face to face teaching and exhortation addressed to an audience which, at the time, and to the preacher, consisted as it were of but one individual. They are human documents called forth by living human experiences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sermons to Young Men

Download or read book Sermons to Young Men written by Henry Van Dyke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons to Young Men: A New and Enlarged Edition of "Straight Sermons" It has not seemed necessary, and perhaps it would not be possible, to disguise the contents of this small volume as essays, or to set it forth under a general and taking title which might offer some allurement to curiosity. Let it go for what it is, - a hook of sermons, straight and simple. They were made for a church in which, fortunately, there are a great many young men, and they have since been preached, with one exception, in college chapels at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and elsewhere. This fact is mentioned merely to account for their practical tendency, and to explain, or excuse, the singular circumstance that there is nothing peculiar in their religious teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zion Builders Sermons: A Series of Sermons Addressed to the Young People of the Church You might naturally imagine that after a man has preached for a number of years under various conditions that he would approach a sermon or a series of sermons with absolute nu concern, but I believe that whenever a man reaches that con dition he ceases to preach. He may keep on talking but he is not preaching any longer. Certainly I have never felt a more profound feeling of responsibility than I feel in entering upon this series of meetings, and I depend very greatly upon your faith and prayers. The subject as announced for to-night is that of faith, and the text is found in Mark Have faith in God, the language of our Lord and Master. Some two or three weeks ago a group of Chinese students studying in the University of Illinois sent out a questionnaire to one thousand prominent men of the United States, men supposed to be Christians. There were only three questions in this questionnaire: Do you believe in God? If so, why? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Important Subjects The command here addressed to the Israelites, is binding upon every impenitent sinner, to whom the Gospel shall be addressed. He is required to perform the same duty, upon the same penalty. It becomes, therefore, a matter of infinite importance that we should well understand, and fully and immediately 'obey, the requirement. The questions that would naturally arise to a reflecting mind on reading this text, are the following. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sermons and Addresses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons and Addresses Classic Reprint written by John A. Broadus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons and Addresses Some of these sermons have been published in periodi cals, or printed for private distribution; others are now for the first time in print. Nearly all were taken down by stenographers, whether for a periodical or for the preacher. In revising, it has not usually seemed best to remove the colloquial phrases, and the occasional breaks in construo tion, which naturally mark freely spoken discourse. Where necessary in order to account for illustrations or other allusions in a sermon or address, the occasion of its delivery has been stated in a note. Several of the' sermons have been preached to a good many churches; and persons who remember well in that line may be interested in noticing differences, sometimes numerous and considerable, due to altered circumstances or the preacher's varying moods. Some of the addresses are quite familiar in tone; others were made on a dignified or solemn occasion. Everything in the volume that -is not of quite recent origin, has been carefully revised. The task has awakened a thousand precious memories of those among whom I have gone preaching the gospel. I pray God's blessing upon them all; and his blessing upon these printed dis courses, that they may do some good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Sermons: Practical and Controversial The following discourses are published at the suggestion and by the solicitation of friends, and not because of any special merit the author attaches to them. Some of them were written years ago, and now appear again, slightly revised. Others have been recently written, and now for the first time appear in print. The sixth sermon is an address to young men by J. Randolph tucker, formerly attorney-general of Virginia, revised and amended by the author of this work. 'i regard it as the best lay sermon extant, and as largely contributing to the value of this book. The eighteenth sermon, by Bro. Geo. Plattenburg, is a very suitable one with which to close the volume, and is specially commended to the consideration of the reader. I have not written for the critic, but for the candid enquirer after the truth; and if I have sometimes seemed severe, I beg the reader to remember that truth is a two-edged sword, cutting both ways. Book Sermons on Various Subjects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons on Various Subjects Classic Reprint written by Thomas Asbury Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Various Subjects Several considerations have induced me to consent to the publication of these Sermons. The want of a small volume of instructive discourses on various religious sub jects, suited in matter, manner, and cost to our people, and especially in the west, has long been felt by them, particularly as we have no such work on the Catalogue 'of Books printed and sold at.our Book Concern. The Methodist Episcopal Church abounds in periodicals, biogra phy, and history, but not in sermons of her own authorship. Perhaps one reason of this is, Mr. Wesley's Sermons are supposed by many to supersede the necessity of all others among us. I am perfectly free to admit, they are the best ever written, or that probably ever will be written; still that work is too voluminous and costly to meet the case of those for whom this is more especially designed. Be sides, it is not clear to my mind, that all the sermons made in America, having a special adaptation to the state of society here, should die with their authors, without ever appearing in print, merely because superior ones for general purposes have been imported. There are in all communi ties some peculiarities, which are best understood by the ministers who serve them. The Book Committee at Cin cinnati, including the Editors, have several times, officially, requested the preparation of such a work as this is designed to be, while the Agents of that Concern, and other brethren in the west, have, for years, kindly encouraged the under taking; and, hence, hoping it might do some good, I finally, though with much fear and trembling, consented to make the attempt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Five Village Sermons Hen we read such psalms as the one from which this verse is taken, we cannot help seeing, if we consider, a great difference between them and any hymns or religious poetry which are commonly written or read in these days. The hymns which are most liked now, and the psalms which people most willingly choose out Of the Bible, are those which speak, or seem to speak, about God's dealings with people's own souls, while such psalms as this are overlooked. People do not care really about psalms of this kind when they find them in the Bible, an'd they do not expect or wish nowadays any one to write. Poetry like them. For these psalms of which I speak praise and honour God, not for what He has done to our souls, but for what He has done and is 66mg, in Que. Gas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Various Subjects, Written and Preached at Different Places and Times, During His Public Ministry of Forty-Four Years I have also thought proper to affix to each Sermon, the date or time of its first composition, for reasons 1 need not here state, as they will naturally suggest themselves to the reader. It will, at least, show that my religious system has been substantially the same throughout the whole period of my ministry: as in the General Convention of 1844, I was publicly charged with having changed my religious sentiments and principles since I came into Virginia. For the same purpose this volume begins with the first, and closes with the last Sermon I ever preached to my own people. I had, indeed, before the fall of 1811, been two and a-half years in the ministry, but I labor ed only as an assistant in the parish of another. The first church, of which I was rector, is that of St. James', Wilmington, N. C. My first Sermon there, indeed, is rather declamatory, and bears marks of ar dent youth, and of the necessary haste in which it was written, immediately after I reached Wilmington. But the reader, I trust, will know how to pardon this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
