Book Would Everybody Please Stop

Download or read book Would Everybody Please Stop written by Jenny Allen and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor "One of the funniest writers in America." That’s what The New Yorker’s Andy Borowitz calls Jenny Allen—and with good reason. In her debut essay collection, the longtime humorist and performer declares no subject too sacred, no boundary impassable. With her eagle eye for the absurd and hilarious, Allen reports from the potholes midway through life’s journey. One moment she’s flirting shamelessly—and unsuccessfully—with a younger man at a wedding; the next she’s stumbling upon X-rated images on her daughter’s computer. She ponders the connection between her ex-husband’s questions about the location of their silverware, and the divorce that came a year later. While undergoing chemotherapy, she experiments with being a “wig person.” And she considers those perplexing questions that we never pause to ask: Why do people say “It is what it is”? What’s the point of fat-free half-and-half ? And haven’t we heard enough about memes? Jenny Allen’s musings range fluidly from the personal to the philosophical. She writes with the familiarity of someone telling a dinner party anecdote, forgoing decorum for candor and comedy. To read Would Everybody Please Stop? is to experience life with imaginative and incisive humor.

Book Welcome to Oxnard

  • Author : Cristina Herrera
  • Publisher : University of Pittsburgh Press
  • Release : 2024-07-15
  • ISBN : 082299142X
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Welcome to Oxnard written by Cristina Herrera and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michele Serros (1966–2015) is widely known for her groundbreaking book Chicana Falsa and Other Stories of Death, Identity, and Oxnard. Despite her status as a major figure in Chicanx literature, no scholar has written a book-length examination of her body of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction—until now. Cristina Herrera, also from Oxnard, weaves in history, autoethnography, and literary analysis to explore Chicana adolescence and young womanhood with a focus on place-making. Factoring in location, region, and landscape, Herrera asks what it means to grow up Chicana in settings that carry centuries of colonial violence, segregation, and everyday racism against Mexican American communities. She contends that Serros used her hometown to broaden understandings of who and what constitutes Chicanx communities and identities. By reading Serros’s work in tandem with her lived experience in the same setting, Herrera uncovers moments of adolescent subjectivity that could only be vocalized and constructed within this particular locale. Herrera pushes against the tendency to separate the author from the text and argues for a spatial understanding of Chicana adolescence, race, class, and young womanhood.

Book Comic Performativities

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dustin Goltz
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2017-06-14
  • ISBN : 1351723766
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Comic Performativities written by Dustin Goltz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comic Performativities: Identity, Internet Outrage, and the Aesthetics of Communication studies patterns of criticism and public debate in the relationship between humour, identity, and offense. In an increasingly reductive and politically charged debate, right-wing pundits argue leftist politics has compromised a free and open discussion, while scholars take right-wing critics to task for reifying systems of oppression under the guise of reason and respect. In response, Goltz scrutinises twenty-first century "comedic controversies," the notion of "political correctness," and the so-called "outrage machine" of social media. How should we appropriately determine whether a joke is "sexist," "racist," or "offensive"? Informed by communication, performance, and critical identity theory, Goltz examines infamous controversies involving performers like Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer, and Seth MacFarlane, and the social media backlash that redefined these events. He investigates the ironic interplay between spoken word, identity, physicality and, as a result, the contrasting meanings potentially construed. Consequently, the book encourages a greater appreciation of the aesthetics involved in comedic performance that help signpost interpretation and emphasizes the role of the audience as self-reflexive and self-aware. This book highlights the significant parallels between the nature of performance art and comedic performance in order to elevate analysis of, and discussion around, contemporary comedy. In doing so, it is an important critical contribution to the field of performance studies and cultural criticism, as well as communication studies, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Book Entertainment Media and Politics

Download or read book Entertainment Media and Politics written by Robert Lance Holbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prominence of politically-themed entertainment is evident across the global media landscape. Given its popularity, it is important to gain a firm understanding of the mechanisms through which this diverse and multi-faceted content can generate democratic outcomes. In addition, it is essential to isolate and predict properly the strength of a given effect and the conditions under which a specific outcome will become evident. The works contained in this edited volume explore affect- and cognition-driven processes of influence, recognizing that humans are both emotional and rational beings. In addition, empirical evidence is offered to isolate and compare specific types of political entertainment media content (e.g., different types of satire) and citizens’ proclivities for this content (e.g., a person’s Affinity for Political Humor), in order to best understand the complex means by which entertainment media can generate political influence. Attention is also paid to expanding what can and should be defined as "political entertainment" media, which includes opinion-based political talk programming. The collection and its authors represent a global perspective to reflect the rise of political entertainment media as a global phenomenon. This book was originally published as a special issue of Mass Communication and Society.

Book Humor Empathy and Community in Twentieth Century American Poetry

Download or read book Humor Empathy and Community in Twentieth Century American Poetry written by Rachel Trousdale and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humor, Empathy, and Community in Twentieth-Century American Poetry explores how American poets of the last hundred years have used laughter to create communities of readers and writers. For poets slightly outside of the literary or social mainstream, humor encourages mutual understanding and empathic insight among artist, audience, and subject. As a result, laughter helps poets reframe and reject literary, political, and discursive hierarchies--whether to overturn those hierarchies, or to place themselves at the top. While theorists like Freud and Bergson argue that laughter patrols and maintains the boundary between in-group and out-group, this volume shows how laughter helps us cross or re-draw those boundaries. Poets who practice such constructive humor promote a more democratic approach to laughter. Humor reveals their beliefs about their audiences and their attitudes toward the Romantic notion that poets are exceptional figures. When poets use humor to promote empathy, they suggest that poetry's ethical function is tied to its structure: empathy, humor, and poetry identify shared patterns among apparently disparate objects. This book explores a broad range of serious approaches to laughter: the inclusive, community-building humor of W. H. Auden and Marianne Moore; the self-aggrandizing humor of Ezra Pound; the self-critical humor of T. S. Eliot; Sterling Brown's antihierarchical comedy; Elizabeth Bishop's attempts to balance mockery with sympathy; and the comic epistemologies of Lucille Clifton, Stephanie Burt, Cathy Park Hong, and other contemporary poets. It charts a developing poetics of laughter in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, showing how humor can be deployed to embrace, to exclude, and to transform.

Book EN ANGEL STORM S01E04

Download or read book EN ANGEL STORM S01E04 written by CRAMER and published by GALAHAD. This book was released on 2015-01-17 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ANGEL&STORM is a fantasy novel about the virtual reality game GALAHAD. You are reading this in A.D. 2045; it is an actual situation where everything is well controlled again by the emergence of New World Order (NWO). 29 year ago, anything related to Japanese yen had defaulted due to economic and environmental collapse of Japan, the country which used to be one of the main powers in East Asia. As a result, powerless countries were knocked down one after another by financial paralysis like falling dominoes. Moreover, the massive outbreak of the fatal yet unknown virus killed billions of people in some countries like China and Africa, and some mutant humans were born after the virus(e.g. Modified Ebola) outbreak. Each country strengthened its governmental authority and imposed martial law, justifying that it is to find terrorists and to protect citizens. Not so long after, a religious conflict caused a nuclear war in Israel. In 2017, nuclear wars had begun in many countries simultaneously, and the Illuminati intensified the war between South and North Korea, the powder keg of East Asia, to gain enormous profits and supremacy. The United States, once called the mediator, tried to confront the full scale invasion of China and Russia, but soon it collapsed feebly and lost the title of “the most powerful country in the world.” Meanwhile, the mercenaries in the broad battlefield selectively killed the disarmed people. The citizens from all over the world were left in chaos as they could not tell who their enemies and allies were. They could not take any more inflation, conflicts between countries and regions, and a food crisis, so the citizens started the first worldwide riot. The massive natural disasters from abrupt climate changes and tectonic movements made the citizens go through the worst era. Then NWO appeared in front of them. It led the survived population of five hundred million people using powerful control and justified that its control over people was to restore Earth. By the time 20 years of Earth restoration project was ended, almost all tasks in society were handled by Zion’s selected executors and robots, and the citizen from all over the world had received the new class called “commoner” and the identification system from NWO. World’s commoners were losing jobs as they were restricted from accessing high quality upper class information for security and safety purposes, and they ended up taking over the simple manufacturing and the mining jobs. World’s commoners who had lost their life goals began to have complaints against NWO, and the world was on the verge of facing the second worldwide riot. However, instead of forcibly cracking down on the riot, NWO was generous enough to create a virtual realty world, justifying that the virtual reality world was to ensure every commoner’s happy life. As commoners regained the stabilities of their lives, there were no more riots or complaints; however, they were repeating the same history in the virtual reality given by NWO. The revolutionary armies and the scholars around the world could not neglect what commoners were doing in GALAHAD anymore. To change commoner’s consciousness to civic consciousness, they began to infiltrate themselves into GALAHAD… What would you do if you can change the tragic history? What if justice you believe in is false? In this virtual reality world with a medieval era setting, the mute girl Aru who wanted to become the pirate queen started the adventure with her mercenaries, traveling vast oceans and perilous lands. However, Illuminati and Freemason, the secretive organizations that established New World Order, tried to interrupt them… What would be the truth of human history that they tried to hide from commoners? ANGEL&STORM is the fantasy novel with new perspectives on angels and demons, deceits of creationism, reinterpretations of religion and history, alternating points of view, and the expansive storyline with numerous characters. This novel consists of six seasons, and each season is split into 15 to 20 series. One season will be released over a year.
