Book The Art of Manipulating Fabric

Download or read book The Art of Manipulating Fabric written by Colette Wolff and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibilities for three-dimensional manipulation of fabric - gathering, pleating, tucking, shirring, and quilting woven materials - are seemingly endless. To describe them all would be to describe the entire history of sewing. In The Art of manipulating Fabric, Colette Wolff has set herself just this task, and she succeeds brilliantly. Working from the simplest possible form - a flat piece of cloth and a threaded needle - she categorizes all major dimensional techniques, show how they are related, and give examples of variations both traditional and modern. The result is an encyclopedia of techniques that resurface, reshape, restructure and reconstruct fabric. • More than 350 diagrams support the extensive how-tos, organized into broad general categories, then specific sub-techniques • Handsome photos galleries showcase the breathtaking possibilities in each technique and aid visual understanding by emphasizing the sculptured fabric surface with light and shadow • Textile artists and quilters, as well as garment and home decor sewers, will expand their design horizons with the almost limitless effects that can be achieved.

Book Theraplay Other Plays

Download or read book Theraplay Other Plays written by Christopher Bollas and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main characters of these five plays by Christopher Bollas struggle to survive in a post-"Catastrophe" world. As they go about ordinary life, it is clear that something insidious has both preceded their existence, colored it, and is everywhere and nowhere. Like the existential universe of some plays of the 1950's-Ionescu, early Pinter, Beckett-human meaning is in meager supply, but Bollas's work-clearly following in this tradition-examines existence in the 21st century through a new lens. He explores a damaged self that strives to find a way to live in a world devoid of meaning. One lives to fulfill a function. The absurd context in which many of the characters live seems eerily premonitional, as if some rough new character formation is slouching towards us all. Theraplay and Other Plays includes pieces such as: a theatre company which has one day to change the life of a damaged man; a friendship that comes to an end on grounds so petty that causation is up for laughs; a dinner party that descends into madness; a man assigned the task of interviewing people for a job that has never been explained to him; and a farce about a rock collector who visits a psychoanalyst to sort out the rock's object relations. These plays are dark, oddly amusing, and deeply moving. Bollas finds redemption within human frailty. His characters' bewilderment in the face of absurd conditions becomes an embarkation point for recovery from social disaster.

Book excerpt: When young would-be actor Michael Whistler meets eccentric Jewish artist Billy Zachariah and his consort Rose Tattoo in a London police station, he is drawn inexorably into their life in Westwoods - a house where portraits are painted, lessons are learnt, and fears confronted. The rowdy and caustic Billy becomes a father to him, and Rose a generous mother. Michael longs to uncover the secret history of the pseudonymous (and Catholic) Rose, but he is not prepared for the final scene in this passion play - when Rose has to carry out a life-saving mission that may destroy her. A rich and unconventional three-way love story (with cameo appearances by a miraculous painting and a rubber duck), this novel re-tells the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, travelling through the complex heart of true love, human memory, stigma, mental illness and God.

Book The Despair of Monkeys and Other Trifles

Download or read book The Despair of Monkeys and Other Trifles written by Françoise Hardy and published by Feral House. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I was for a very long time passionately in love with her, as I’m sure she’s guessed. Every male in the world, and a number of females also were, and we all still are.” —David Bowie “Françoise was the ultimate pin-up of most hip bedroom walls, and I know for a fact that Brian Jones and Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and many other pop stars were desperately interested in having Françoise Hardy become their girlfriend in some way.” —Malcolm McLaren Françoise Hardy is best known in Europe for originating the famed “Yé-Yé” sound in pop music which began a cultural scene in the early 1960s. Her teenage success grew as she became a much-photographed fashion model and actress. Adored for her shy beauty and emotional songwriting, she sang hit songs in French, Italian, and German. In The Despair of Monkeys and Other Trifles, she bares her soul and tells the truth of her relationships, fears, and triumphs as well as the hard-won wisdom carved from a life well-lived. This unusually-titled memoir has sold millions of copies in its French, German, Italian, and Spanish editions in recent years. This first English-language release is expertly translated by Jon E. Graham. The book contains dozens of images in addition to Hardy’s intimate recollections of her upbringing and career. Françoise Hardy, an accomplished songwriter and lyricist also collaborated with accomplished songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg, and Patrick Modiano. Both her early pop work and later material in a complex and mature style helped generate a dedicated cult following. Both her husband, Jacques Dutronc, and son, Thomas Dutronc, are respected musicians in France.
