Book Serenity in Crisis

Download or read book Serenity in Crisis written by Ortwin de Graef and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A polymath well versed in European literature and philosophy, one of the founders of deconstruction, and a widely respected teacher, Paul de Man brought unprecedented attention and acclaim to the so-called Yale Critics. His fame was at a zenith when he died suddenly in 1983. A few years later, Ortwin de Graef found the de Man had written for the collaborationist press during the Nazi occupation, a discovery that ignited an international reassessment of de Man's work. Serenity in Crisis is the first sustained account of the complex, intertextual tradition in which de Man wrote and of the persistent concerns expressed in his early work. It reconstructs the truth-models with which de Man justified his political choice before and during the occupation and traces them back to an ambitious intention to integrate the competing truths of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and literature. The significance of de Man's ideational framework and the decisions that followed from it have extended well beyond the disasters of World War II. De Graef clearly illuminates and critiques the abstruse paths of logic in de Man's early writings as well as in the reformulations of de Man's thought expressed in his writings of the 1950s.

Book excerpt: This novel follows the journey of a group of Greek refugees who were displaced from their homeland in Asia Minor and settled in the summer of 1923 in a desolate corner of the coast, near Athens. Told in the authors characteristic sparse, lyrical style and inspired by his own experience of migration, it details their hatred of war, their love for the nature surrounding them, the hostility of their new neighbours and their struggle to find meaning as they adapt to a new life. Though published in 1937, Serenity is a timely evocation of the eternal condition of the refugee, as seen by a writer with a deeply human eye.

Book excerpt: In a provocative and practical look at modern stress, Seeking Serenity offers an empowering new message: Stress can serve as a guide to living our happiest and healthiest lives. In Seeking Serenity, stress columnist Amanda Enayati challenges our long-held assumptions about stress, painting a groundbreaking picture that separates myth from reality when it comes to what is commonly referred to as the plague of modern life. Weaving together stories, research from science, history, philosophy and diverse faiths, and everyday exercises, she crafts a fascinating tale that begins with the behind-the-scenes machinations of corporate villains and ends in the power of our stories to shape our realities. We are living in an era of dramatic highs and lows, with lives that move at a pace and intensity impossible at any other time in history. These contradictions throw us off-kilter, out of harmony and balance, creating what we perceive as never-ending and destructive cycles of stress. But life itself has always been—and will always be—a series of fluctuations: the good days, the bad days, the excruciating days. The key to mastering stress lies in the way we experience it. Seeking Serenity presents ten revolutionary principles developed from the emerging science of stress and reinforced by literature, philosophy and age-old spiritual wisdom that help us to differentiate between destructive and constructive stress, and to master stress in the everyday by learning how to: Shift our perceptions to interpret inevitable challenges in a way that serves us better; Embrace a narrative that casts stress as a pathway to adaptation and growth; and Commit to breaks, buffers, and protective practices that will minimize and neutralize the adverse impacts of toxic stress. Drawing on extensive research and remarkable case studies, Seeking Serenity presents a clear and accessible action plan to achieving more joyful and productive lives, stronger communities and a better world.

Book Journey to Serenity

Download or read book Journey to Serenity written by Diane Bellack and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Astract] This study addresses the question, What is the experience of discovering the calm in the eye of the storm?" Personal experiences are described and explored using the heuristic research model. Heuristic investigation was used because of the intimate and solitary nature of the phenomenon of journeying to serenity. Through the Heuristic investigation, a deep level of understanding of the phenomenon was allowed to surface. A literature review of books, journals and dissertations revealed that no similar study had been completed, but did reveal a wealth of material on various aspects of a deep felt sense of calm and how one might discover it in the midst of a personal life crisis. The material for the study was obtained through self-searching and co-researcher participation and was deemed original by the researched. An immersion into the researcher's own experiencing of discovering the calm in the eye of the storm was undertaken by the researcher. Data was obtained from nine co-researchers' personal experiences of journeying to serenity. Six co-researchers were women and three were men. Each interview as tape-recorded, transcribed and reviewed for themes. All major themes, which emerged from these interviews, and the researcher's self-searching, were identified and illustrated. The identified themes were: I. Personal crisis involving intense pain/trauma, II. Point of No Return, III. Openness/Willingness to change, IV. Peak Experience, V. Anchors, VI. Continued Unfolding. Five subthemes were identified and illustrated under the major theme of Peak Experience. These were: Loss of Fear, Being one with all, that is Tacit knowing, Dichotomies are Transcended or Resolved, Peace/Serenity. The identified themes depicted the process the co-researchers underwent in their own personal times of intense pain that led to the discovery of the calm that gave them hope, clarity, and understanding. Discovering the calm in the eye of the storm for the co-researchers, is an ongoing process of embracing the polarities of life, while seeking movement towards healing. The findings of this study could be used by educators, clinicians, and medical professionals

Book Toward Serenity

Book excerpt: Serenity, the topic of this book, means to be at peace with oneself, one's Higher Power and with the world. Serenity is a work in progress; we can not attain it in its perfection. However, the effort that you make to attain Serenity brings with it a conflict-free happiness. In this book, Vince simplifies the process of therapy by outlining common-sense steps which the reader can use to guide himself on the way to a more peaceful life. It is not a book to be read at one sitting, cover to cover. Rather, at times when one is confused, or in crisis, the reader can refer to the various sections - e.g. Communications, Grief, Addiction, - and find practical suggestions to meditate upon. By keeping it simple, and avoiding psychobabble, Vince has combined a number of theories of mental health into a unified, uncomplicated book dealing with the stumbling blocks we encounter in life.

Book Theory s Empire

Download or read book Theory s Empire written by Daphne Patai and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-04-20 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not too long ago, literary theorists were writing about the death of the novel and the death of the author; today many are talking about the death of Theory. Theory, as the many theoretical ism's (among them postcolonialism, postmodernism, and New Historicism) are now known, once seemed so exciting but has become ossified and insular. This iconoclastic collection is an excellent companion to current anthologies of literary theory, which have embraced an uncritical stance toward Theory and its practitioners. Written by nearly fifty prominent scholars, the essays in Theory's Empire question the ideas, catchphrases, and excesses that have let Theory congeal into a predictable orthodoxy. More than just a critique, however, this collection provides readers with effective tools to redeem the study of literature, restore reason to our intellectual life, and redefine the role and place of Theory in the academy.
