Book excerpt: A woman searches for the passion of a lifetime in nineteenth-century Hong Kong in this epic historical romance from the author of China Song. It is 1861 and Hong Kong is the most exotic, remote place on earth for a westerner like Serena Rose Bellamy Bolton. She is as greedy for love as she is for treasure. For Jason Frobisher, Hong Kong is just another place where he can lose himself and forget the woman who will never be his. Steven Bellamy is there to convert the heathen masses only to find that a change of heart has left his soul up for grabs. Daniel Cheng is the one man who stands to protect his homeland from the meddling hands of these westerners. Little does he know he will not be able to live without the beautiful hand of one of them.
Download or read book Other Rivers written by Peter Hessler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate and revelatory account of two generations of students in China’s heartland, by an author who has observed the country’s tumultuous changes over the past quarter century More than two decades after teaching English during the early part of China’s economic boom, an experience chronicled in his book River Town, Peter Hessler returned to Sichuan Province to instruct students from the next generation. At the same time, Hessler and his wife enrolled their twin daughters in a local state-run elementary school, where they were the only Westerners. Over the years, Hessler had kept in close contact with many of the people he had taught in the 1990s. By reconnecting with these individuals—members of China’s “Reform generation,” now in their forties—while teaching current undergrads, Hessler gained a unique perspective on China’s incredible transformation. In 1996, when Hessler arrived in China, almost all of the people in his classroom were first-generation college students. They typically came from large rural families, and their parents, subsistence farmers, could offer little guidance as their children entered a brand-new world. By 2019, when Hessler arrived at Sichuan University, he found a very different China, as well as a new kind of student—an only child whose schooling was the object of intense focus from a much more ambitious cohort of parents. At Sichuan University, many young people had a sense of irony about the regime but mostly navigated its restrictions with equanimity, embracing the opportunities of China’s rise. But the pressures of extreme competition at scale can be grueling, even for much younger children—including Hessler’s own daughters, who gave him an intimate view into the experience at their local school. In Peter Hessler’s hands, China’s education system is the perfect vehicle for examining the country’s past, present, and future, and what we can learn from it, for good and ill. At a time when anti-Chinese rhetoric in America has grown blunt and ugly, Other Rivers is a tremendous, essential gift, a work of enormous empathy that rejects cheap stereotypes and shows us China from the inside out and the bottom up. As both a window onto China and a mirror onto America, Other Rivers is a classic from a master of the form.

Download or read book China s Leftover Women written by Sandy To and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "sheng nu" ("leftover women") has been recently coined in China to describe the increasing number of women, especially highly educated professional women in their late twenties and over who have not married. This book explores this phenomenon, reporting on extensive research among "leftover women", research which reveals that the majority of women are keen to get married, contrary to the notion that traditional marriage has lost its appeal among the new generations of economically independent women. The book explains the reasons behind these women’s failures to get married, discusses the consequences for the future make-up of China’s population at the dawn of its modification of the one child policy, and compares the situation in China with that in other countries. The book provides practical solutions for educated women’s courtship dilemmas, and long term solutions for China’s partnering issues, gender relations, and marriage formation. The book also relates the ‘leftover women’ problem to theories of family, mate selection, feminism, and individualization.
Download or read book The Rendez vous written by Andrew Parkin and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2003 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an introduction centred on migration, exile, «the other», and the experience of multicultural communities in the modern world, followed by three sections of original poetry. In Part I, poems deal with Britain, Canada, and China (mainly Hong Kong). In Part II the focus shifts to Australia and then Europe again (mainly France). Part III, entitled «Shards» presents fragmentary lyric voices suggesting the processes of cultural fragmentation and change. In each part the poems connect with individual experience, historical events such as the French, Russian and Chinese revolutions, myth and art. Multicultural experience as a modern reality, loss, regeneration and creativity are all major concerns in the poems. Their many artistic references include, among others, Apollinaire, Bonnefoy, Michael Bullock, Rosalía de Castro, Dante, Robert Desnos, Anne Frank, Li Po, Magritte, Albert Namajira, Sidney Nolan, Bill Reid, Laura Wee Lay Laq and Zhang Ji. From the experience of living in modern multicultural societies, the writer envisages the kind of international modernity that tries to preserve the dignity of individuals and humane values. Such modernity has emerged from cultures fragmented by revolutions, globalization, and rapid change. These poems occupy both hemispheres, inhabit temperate and tropical zones, and make cultural transfers across them.

Download or read book The Art of Confidence written by Wendy Lee and published by Kensington Books. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I suppose I did it because I wanted something to show for the thirty years—longer than I had lived in my homeland—that I had been here in America. Something that was properly appreciated, even if someone else got all the credit.” Liu Qingwu doesn’t set out to commit a crime. He only wants to sell a painting—something more substantial than the Impressionist knockoffs he flogs to tourists outside New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. But the lucrative commission he receives from a Chelsea art dealer is more complicated than he initially realizes. Liu has been hired to create not an homage to Andrew Cantrell’s modernist masterpiece, Elegy, but a forgery that will sell for millions. The painting will change the lives of everyone associated with it—Liu, a Chinese immigrant still reeling from his wife’s recent departure; Caroline, a gallery owner intent on saving her aunt’s legacy; Molly, her perceptive assistant; and Harold, a Taiwanese businessman with an ethical dilemma on his hands. Weaving together their stories with that of Cantrell and the inspiration for his masterpiece, Wendy Lee’s intricate, multilayered novel explores the unique fascination of great art and the lengths to which some are driven to create it—and to possess it.
