Book excerpt: The sequence stratigraphy, depositional systems and reservoir geology of the lower and middle Oligocene Frio Formation in the Red Fish Bay field, Nueces County, Texas, are examined based on 1,800 feet (548.6 m) of core, 28 wireline-logs and 30 mi2 of 3-D seismic data. The study interval is composed of an incomplete 3rd-order stratigraphic sequence with an incomplete lowstand systems tract (LST), a complete transgressive systems tract (TST) and an incomplete highstand system tract (HST). This 3rd-order succession is divided into 12 4th-order sequences with average thickness of 150 feet (45.7 m). The lowstand system tract (LST) from 4th-order sequence 1 to 4th-order sequence 7 displays an aggradational stacking pattern in cross-sections. The regressive part of each 4th-order sequence has an upward-coarsening trend that reflects a transition of depositional environments from offshore to lower, middle and upper shoreface. The transgressive part of each 4th-order sequence exhibits an upward-fining trend, commonly associated with backstepping cycles composed of shoreface, washover-fan, and back-barrier lagoonal deposits. Sandstone maps of 4th-order sequence and stratal-slice maps from 3-D seismic data within 3rd-order lowstand system tracts display a strike-elongate geometry, indicating wave-dominated depositional systems. The 3rd-order transgressive system tract (TST) displays a retrogradational stacking pattern in cross-sections. The overall upward-fining trend records water deepening during transgression, interpreted as a transition from lower-shoreface to shelf environments. The 3rd-order highstand system tract (HST) from 4th-order sequence 8 to 4th-order sequence 12 displays a progradational stacking pattern in cross-sections. It is upward-coarsening and upward-thickening, indicating a transition from to distal- to proximal-shoreline setting. The geometry of framework sandstone bodies, inferred from gross-sandstone and stratal-slice maps is relatively lobate, suggesting a wave-modified deltaic system. The sandstone body continuity is very good and heterogeneity is very low within shoreface or wave-dominated deltaic systems in LST and HST sequences in Redfish Bay. Sandstone thickness expands towards the growth fault, owing to structurally controlled accommodation, but is thicker in the southwest part of study area, where it is controlled by paleogeomorphology, related to the presence of a deltaic depocenter. The sandstone body thickness of each 4th-order sequence is as much as 240 ft (73.2 m) and commonly ~100 ft (30.5 m) in average. Sandstone development in the study succession is controlled by the sequence stratigraphic context, and modification by depositional processes. The average porosity and permeability of study interval are 19.4% and 33.6 md respectively. Lithology is the main control on porosity and permeability. Sedimentary and biogenic structures also modify grain-size sorting, indirectly affecting porosity and permeability. Reservoir quality in LST is higher than that in the HST, as the depositional environment in LST is within proximal-delta-front facies, whereas in the HST is within distal-delta-front facies. Reservoir quality varies greatly within each 4th-order sequence, owing to different levels of intensity in bioturbation per each sandstone bed.

The stratigraphic record is envisioned as a framework of repetitive packages of genetically-related strata, formed in response to the shifting base level, in which the locus of deposition of various sediment types may be anticipated. This attribute is rapidly promoting sequence stratigraphy as an indispensable tool for prediction of facies in exploration and production geology. In hydrocarbon exploration the application of sequence stratigraphy has ranged from anticipating reservoir- and source-rock distribution to predicting carbonate diagenesis, porosity and permeability. The capability to anticipate vertical and lateral distribution of facies and reservoir sands in the basinal, shoreface, incised valley-fill and regressive settings alone has been a great asset for exploration. In frontier areas, where data are often limited to seismic lines, sequence-stratigraphic methodology has helped determine the timing and of types of unconformities and anticipate transgressive- and regressive-prone intervals. In production it is aiding in field development by providing improved source and seal predictions for secondary oil recovery. A recognition of stratigraphic causes of poor recovery through improved understanding of internal stratal architecture can lead to new well recompletions and enhanced exploitation in existing fields. The sequence-stratigraphic discipline is in a state of rapid expansion.

Book excerpt: Regional depositional systems analyses combining surface and subsurface geological and geophysical data provide the framework for a sequence stratigraphic study of the Lower Oligocene Vicksburg Formation of the Gulf Coastal Plain. The results describe the eustatic history of the Vicksburg stratigraphic unit. The two primary Texas depocenters, the Houston embayment and the Rio Grande embayment, were separated by a deep-rooted structural nose: the San Marcos arch. A barrier / strandplain intervened between the Louisiana deltaic depocenter and the Houston embayment. Within the embayments, deltaic complexes merged along strike with barrier / strandplains. Contemporaneous growth faulting controlled deltaic depositional patterns in the Rio Grande embayment and, to a lesser degree, in the Houston embayment. Smaller wave-dominated delta complexes interspersed with barrier / strandplains extended across the San Marcos arch. Updip of the paralic depocenters, fluvial systems traversed coastal plain units. Seaward of the paralic systems, sand and mud deposits prograded across and built up over the relict Jackson shelf and shelf margin. The contact between the Vicksburg Formation and the underlying Jackson Group marks the position of the Eocene - Oligocene boundary within the Gulf Coastal Plain section. On regional dip-oriented well-log cross sections there is a distinct, abrupt, seaward shift in the paralic facies at the Jackson - Vicksburg boundary; this contact corresponds to an Exxon-model Type 1 unconformity. The unconformity is related to the development of an Antarctic ice sheet in the earliest Oligocene. During middle Vicksburg time, a minor transgression (genetic stratigraphic sequence boundary) flooded the coastal plain. Overlying the progradational Vicksburg Formation, the lower Frio Formation accumulated in an aggradational mode; this switch of depositional modes corresponds to an Exxon-model Type 2 sequence boundary. Construction of genetic stratigraphic sequence diagrams and comparison to Exxon's coastal onlap curves across different areas of the Oligocene coast show that the effects of local depocenters (sediment influx) may mask eustatic effects. Only truly regional events, such as the middle Vicksburg transgression and the basal Vicksburg seaward shift in coastal position, correlate across the coastal plain and may result from a eustatic change.

Book excerpt: This study defines depositional environments and constructs the sequence stratigraphic framework of the lower Miocene Oakville Formation and the basal part of the middle Miocene Lagarto Formation in the Carancahua Bay area. The Early Miocene of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico represents a tectonically stable period with a high sediment influx. The analysis is based on a data set composed of 45 well logs and 200 mile2 area 3D seismic volume. The study interval was divided into five depositional sequences 1-5 that encompass 0.6-2.5 My. LST, TST, and HST systems tracts were recognized by stacking patterns and bounding surfaces. Sequence thickness increases from sequence 1 to 3 and displays reverse thickness trends from sequence 3 to 5, implying changes in accommodation space relative to sediment supply, beginning with high rates of accommodation and evolving into low accommodation rates relative. Besides type-1 depositional sequence which forms during relative sea-level fall below the shoreline break, regressive units of T-R sequence model were also defined and delineated. The interval contains four regressive units, R-Unit1-4. The R-Unit net sandstone maps exhibit the same characteristic of a dip-oriented source of delta-plain origin and a delta-front depocenter basinward. Integration of well log patterns, sandstone dispersal trends from net sandstone maps and seismic stratal slices led to interpretation of depositional environments in each sequence. LST deposits are represented mainly by incised-valley fill facies. TSTs are composed predominantly of retrogradational barrier/tidal-inlet facies, whereas other TSTs contain lagoonal and reworked deltaic systems. HST1 is composed mainly of fluvial-dominated deltaic systems, whereas deltaic systems in other HSTs exhibit wave-influenced deltaic and strandplain depositional systems. The integrated methodology reveals depositional facies variations in contrast to previous work that interpreted these deposits as shorezone systems. During LSTs coarse-grained sediments bypassed shelf through incised valley systems to a downdip depocenter. More sandy sediments were stored on shelf as deltaic and strandplain deposits during HSTs. In contrast to the others, destructive process occurred in TSTs and reworked sandy sediments, for example from delta fronts to barrier bar and lagoonal facies. Submarine fans form by sediments transported through incised-valley systems and delta fronts are commonly good reservoirs. Hence, presence of such depositional facies in the study area might be genetically linked to exploration targets.
