Book Separating Boundary Layer Response to an Unsteady Turbulent Environment

Download or read book Separating Boundary Layer Response to an Unsteady Turbulent Environment written by David J Gwilliam (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the separating boundary layer of a wing subjected to periodic turbulent disturbances was conducted. Turbulence pulses were generated by a non-thrusting spinning rod placed upstream of the test airfoil at the reduced frequencies of .09 and .47. Time-varying velocity measurements were made at various heights above the 70% chord location at 12 deg. angle of attack (nearly separated flow) and 22 deg. angle of attack (fully separated flow). Split-film anemometry was used to determine flow speed and direction. The flow responses were compared to the quasi-steady state of undisturbed separated flow. Variation of reduced frequency had a dramatic influence on the effects which the periodic disturbance had on the flow response. At a reduced disturbance of .47 the periodic disturbance had no noticeable influence. Imposition of periodic disturbance of the same reduced frequency on attached flow near separation (12 deg. angle of attack) once again caused no apparent destabilizing effects. Lack of sensitivity of the separated boundary layers to the pulses generated at the higher reduced frequency of .47 apparently resulted from its inability to resolve turbulent pulses from one another. Imposition at 22 deg. angle of attack of a pulse at the reduced frequency of .09, however, first stabilized the flow, then greatly intensified the original separation before allowing the flow to return to its undisturbed separated state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the fundamental concepts of unsteady viscous flows have been known since the early part of the century. However, the past decade has seen an unprecedented number of publications in this area. In this monograph I try to connect materials of earlier contributions and synthesize them into a comprehensive entity. One of the main purposes of a monograph, in my opinion, is to fit together in a comprehensive way scattered contributions that provide fragmented information to the readers. The collection of such contributions should be presented in a unified way; continuity of thought and logical sequence of the presentation of ideas and methods are essential. The reader should be able to follow through without having to resort to other references, something that is unavoidable in the case of a research paper or even a review paper. Many of the solutions discussed in the literature address specific practical problems. In fact, in the process of collecting information, I discovered independent lines of investigations, dealing with the same physical problem, but inspired by different practical applications. For example, I found that two groups of investigators have been studying independently the response of a viscous layer to a harmonic external disturbance. One group is con cerned with mass transport and the transport of sediment over the bottom of the ocean, and the other is interested in the aerodynamics of lifting surfaces in harmonically changing environments.

Book The Prediction of Turbulent Boundary layer Separation Influenced by Blowing

Download or read book The Prediction of Turbulent Boundary layer Separation Influenced by Blowing written by Arnold Polak and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents an analysis predicting separation of a turbulent boundary layer over a cone-flare configuration with gas injected into the boundary layer ahead of separation point. Separation location and separation lengths are compared with experimental data obtained at Mach number of 6 and a range of Reynolds numbers. At the highest Reynolds numbers the extent of separation decreases with increasing Reynolds number. When compared to separation over cylinder-flare body it is found that the extent of separation is lower for the cone-flare configuration. (Author).

Book Twenty Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Twenty Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vive la Revolution!" was the theme of the Twenty-Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics held in Val de Reuil, France, from September 17-22, 2000 as more than 140 experts in ship design, construction, and operation came together to exchange naval research developments. The forum encouraged both formal and informal discussion of presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers. This book includes sixty-three papers presented at the symposium which was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research, the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Bassin d'Essais des Carènes. This book includes the ten topical areas discussed at the symposium: wave-induced motions and loads, hydrodynamics in ship design, propulsor hydrodynamics and hydroacoustics, CFD validation, viscous ship hydrodynamics, cavitation and bubbly flow, wave hydrodynamics, wake dynamics, shallow water hydrodynamics, and fluid dynamics in the naval context.
