Book excerpt: Sensory Theatre: How to Make Interactive, Inclusive, Immersive Theatre for Diverse Audiences by a Founder of Oily Cart is an accessible step-by-step guide to creating theatre for inclusive audiences, such as young people on the autism spectrum or affected by other neuro-divergent conditions and children under two. Conventional theatre relies on seeing and hearing to involve its audience; sensory theatre harnesses the power of five or more senses to address its participants who have different ways of relating to the world around them. This book is an insightful history of Oily Cart and its pioneering development of work for the very young, including Baby Theatre, and for neuro-divergent audiences including those on the autism spectrum. It gives a clear introduction to the fundamental concepts of this theatre, suggests a host of practical techniques drawn from over forty years of experience, and describes some of Oily Cart’s most radical innovations, including theatre on trampolines, in hydrotherapy pools, and with flying audiences in the company of aerial artists. The book also includes copious photos from the Oily Cart’s archives and links to videos examples of the company’s work. Readers will learn how to: Research the intended audience while not being led astray by labels. Create a welcoming, immersive sensory space in classrooms, nurseries, school halls, and playgrounds. Devise sensory stories that can be adapted to suit different audiences. Recruit, audition, cast, and run rehearsals. Ensure that the production is truly sensory and interactive. Written for Theatre for Young Audiences, Drama in Education, and specialized Applied Theatre courses, as well as educators and theatre practitioners interested in creating inclusive, interactive productions, Sensory Theatre offers a goldmine of ideas for making work that connects with audiences who can be the hardest to reach.

Book The Provocation of the Senses in Contemporary Theatre

Download or read book The Provocation of the Senses in Contemporary Theatre written by Stephen Di Benedetto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Di Benedetto considers theatrical practice through the lens of contemporary neuroscientific discoveries in this provoking study, which lays the foundation for considering the physiological basis of the power of theatre practice to affect human behavior. He presents a basic summary of the ways that the senses function in relation to cognitive science and physiology, offering an overview of dominant trends of discussion on the realm of the senses in performance. Also presented are examples of how those ideas are illustrated in recent theatrical presentations, and how the different senses form the structure of a theatrical event. Di Benedetto concludes by suggesting the possible implications these neuroscientific ideas have upon our understanding of theatrical composition, audience response, and the generation of meaning.

Book Ability inclusive Sensory Theatre in the United States

Download or read book Ability inclusive Sensory Theatre in the United States written by Molly Mattaini and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines ability-inclusive sensory theatre, an immersive-participatory form of theatre centered on audience of young people with cognitive disabilities, as it has been practiced in the United States from 2007-2020. It argues that sensory theatre is primarily an aesthetic practice, subverting the notion that art practices around disability and youth must be either educational or therapeutic. The paper includes a history of the development of sensory theatre within the United States and the influences of the US educational and arts funding systems upon artistic practice. It argues the aims of sensory theatre are primarily affective rather than semiotic, allowing for a flexible cognitive engagement with the performance text. It catalogs methods of collaboration with audiences in both development and performance to determine to what extent these practices constitute co-authorship. The communication of risk within invitations to participate in the performance are analyzed for their alignment with the concept of "dignity of risk." In the final chapter, the intra-audience viewing dynamics of immersive theatre spaces are placed in conversation with Rosemarie Garland-Thomson's visual rhetorics of disability to examine how the management of the audience's gaze at times subverts and at other times reifies existing socio-cultural narratives around youth and disability.

Book Multisensory Shakespeare and Specialized Communities

Download or read book Multisensory Shakespeare and Specialized Communities written by Sheila T. Cavanagh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can theatre and Shakespearean performance be used with different communities to assist personal growth and development, while advancing social justice goals? Employing an integrative approach that draws from science, actor training, therapeutical practices and current research on the senses, this study reveals the work being done by drama practitioners with a range of specialized populations, such as incarcerated people, neurodiverse individuals, those with physical or emotional disabilities, veterans, people experiencing homelessness and many others. With insights drawn from visits to numerous international programs, it argues that these endeavors succeed when they engage multiple human senses and incorporate kinesthetic learning, thereby tapping into the diverse benefits associated with artistic, movement and mindfulness practices. Neither theatre nor Shakespeare is universally beneficial, but the syncretic practices described in this book offer tools for physical, emotional and collaborative undertakings that assist personal growth and development, while advancing social justice goals. Among the practitioners and companies whose work is examined here are programs from the Shakespeare in Prison Network, the International Opera Theater, Blue Apple Theatre, Flute Theatre, DeCruit and Feast of Crispian programs for veterans, Extant Theatre and prison programs in Kolkata and Mysore, India.

Book Community Cultural Arts Participation Through Sensory Friendly Theatre

Download or read book Community Cultural Arts Participation Through Sensory Friendly Theatre written by Caroline J. Umeda and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Children with sensory processing and developmental disabilities and their families experience barriers in the built, sensory, and social environments that limit their community cultural arts participation. Occupational therapists have begun using innovative service delivery approaches to dismantle these barriers and provide this population with community participation access. Using organization-level consultation, occupational therapists partner with community cultural arts organizations to develop sensory friendly programs that utilize environmental modifications, preparatory materials, and trained staff to support cultural arts participation for this population of children and families. Objective: The primary aim of this research was to investigate family and organization experiences and impacts of a sensory friendly theatre program developed with organization-level occupational therapy consultation. A secondary aim was to investigate organization perspectives on the sensory friendly program development process and partnership with the occupational therapy consultant. Methods: Qualitative case study methodology was used to investigate parent and organization experiences and perspectives. Primary data were collected through in-person semi-structured interviews with nine parents and four theatre staff. Parent and staff interview data were coded and analyzed separately using an inductive approach to identify themes unique to each stakeholder group. Results: Sensory friendly theatre as a “Deeply Meaningful Family Participation Experience” was the primary theme emerging from the parent data. Two secondary themes, the “Power of the Social Environment” and “Unique Children Need Unique Supports” informed understanding of the factors behind families’ positive experiences. A final secondary theme, “Inclusive but Safe Participation Experiences” described parents’ visions for future community opportunities. Conceptualization of the sensory friendly program as “Ignited by Organizational Mission and Personal Commitment” was the prominent theme emerging from the organizational data. Additional themes, “Pathfinding with Expert Consultation and Internal Resources” and “Challenges Worth Tackling,” described staff’s perceptions of key program facilitators and challenges. A final theme, “Powerful Personal and Organization Impacts,” described perceived positive outcomes of sensory friendly program development. Limitations: The scope of this research was limited by the inclusion of only two stakeholder groups and lack of direct data from children with disabilities, actors, and crew members. The primary investigator’s involvement in program development increased potential for bias. Thus, methodological elements including member checks, multiple modes of data collection, peer review, and collaboration between multiple researchers were incorporated to promote trustworthiness of results. Conclusions: Research findings support the potential of sensory friendly programming to promote successful cultural arts participation among families with children with sensory processing and developmental disabilities. Findings also support organization-level consultation as a promising service delivery model to enhance community organizations’ capacities to serve diverse populations. More research is needed to broaden understanding of sensory friendly theatre’s impacts on stakeholders including children with disabilities, actors, and crew members. Further exploration of the consultative occupational therapy process within cultural arts and other community organizations is also needed to support development of best practices for this innovative service approach.

Book Tomas and the Library Lady

Download or read book Tomas and the Library Lady written by Pat Mora and published by Knopf Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Common Core Exemplar Text by an award-winning author-illustrator team Tomás is a son of migrant workers. Every summer he and his family follow the crops north from Texas to Iowa, spending long, arduous days in the fields. At night they gather around to hear Grandfather's wonderful stories. But before long, Tomás knows all the stories by heart. "There are more stories in the library,"Papa Grande tells him. The very next day, Tomás meets the library lady and a whole new world opens up for him. Based on the true story of the Mexican-American author and educator Tomás Rivera, a child of migrant workers who went on to become the first minority Chancellor in the University of California system, this inspirational story suggests what libraries--and education--can make possible. Raul Colón's warm, expressive paintings perfectly interweave the harsh realities of Tomás's life, the joyful imaginings he finds in books, and his special relationships with a wise grandfather and a caring librarian. "A gentle text and innovative artwork. . . . While young readers and future librarians will find this an inspiring tale, the end note gives it a real kick: the story is based on an actual migrant worker [Tomás Rivera] who became chancellor of a university--where the library now bears his name."--Publishers Weekly

Book Attention in Performance

Download or read book Attention in Performance written by Cassis Kilian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elucidates how learning from actors enables an intense education of attention for anthropologists. Actors perform the perception of sunshine, the sensation of pain, affects such as shock and emotions such as happiness; they act quarrels, erotic attraction, leadership and submission on stage. In order to achieve that, they undergo an education of attention, allowing them to develop skills that are also useful for anthropologists, particularly when doing research on phenomena that often elude academic procedures. Drawing on her own acting experiences and ongoing research with actors from Africa and Europe, Cassis Kilian takes up Tim Ingold’s manifold proposals to reconfigure anthropological research. She introduces approaches actors use to explore the complexity of human life and its bodily, sensual and emotional dimensions, which can be difficult for academics to grasp when examining topics such as everyday practices, traumatic experiences and power relations. Though the book discerns pitfalls in anthropological research and suggests artistic approaches to overcome them, it values anthropology as a discipline whose radical self-reflexive approach allows for such experiments. Including exercises and practical approaches, this is valuable reading for scholars interested in anthropological methods, sensory anthropology, perception and materiality, and theatre anthropology.

Book New World Drama

  • Author : Elizabeth Maddock Dillon
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2014-09-01
  • ISBN : 0822395738
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book New World Drama written by Elizabeth Maddock Dillon and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In New World Drama, Elizabeth Maddock Dillon turns to the riotous scene of theatre in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world to explore the creation of new publics. Moving from England to the Caribbean to the early United States, she traces the theatrical emergence of a collective body in the colonized New World—one that included indigenous peoples, diasporic Africans, and diasporic Europeans. In the raucous space of the theatre, the contradictions of colonialism loomed large. Foremost among these was the central paradox of modernity: the coexistence of a massive slave economy and a nascent politics of freedom. Audiences in London eagerly watched the royal slave, Oroonoko, tortured on stage, while audiences in Charleston and Kingston were forbidden from watching the same scene. Audiences in Kingston and New York City exuberantly participated in the slaying of Richard III on stage, enacting the rise of the "people," and Native American leaders were enjoined to watch actors in blackface "jump Jim Crow." Dillon argues that the theater served as a "performative commons," staging debates over representation in a political world based on popular sovereignty. Her book is a capacious account of performance, aesthetics, and modernity in the eighteenth-century Atlantic world.

Book Sensing Greek Drama

Download or read book Sensing Greek Drama written by Zachary Case and published by Cambridge Philological Society. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensing Greek Drama explores ancient Greek tragedy and comedy through the lens of the senses. It works within and beyond a number of recent developments in the scholarship of Classics and related fields. The individual chapters engage with the senses in drama in manifold ways: through various theoretical frameworks borrowed from kindred fields in the humanities and sciences – postmodernism, humanism, feminism, phenomenology, cognitive theory and neuroscience, to name a few – as well as through the more traditional approaches within Classics, including philology, historicism, performance studies and reception. Above all, Sensing Greek Drama serves as a call to “to recover our senses”, as Susan Sontag wrote in her famous essay “Against Interpretation”, in a modern age characterized by sensory overload and deprivation.
