Book Fusion for Robot Perception and Control

Download or read book Fusion for Robot Perception and Control written by Michelle Annabel Lee and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have long dreamed of robots that can perform a wide variety of tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, and exploring potentially dangerous environments. However, robotics adoption still struggles even in highly-structured environments. In factories, robots currently account for less than one third of the manufacturing workforce. Because many robots need to be hardcoded for every task, they often cannot deal with any errors in their models nor any changes to the environment. In academic research, recent works in machine learning are enabling robots to learn directly from data. Particularly in the areas of learning-based perception and control, we see advancements in deep learning for visual perception from raw images as well as deep reinforcement learning (RL) for learning complex skills from trial and error. However, these black-box techniques often require large amounts of data, have difficult-to-interpret results and processes, and fail catastrophically when dealing with out-of-distribution data. In order to create robotic systems that can flexibly operate in dynamic environments, we want robot perception and control algorithms that have three characteristics: sample efficiency, robustness, and generalizability. In this dissertation, I introduce the concept of ''fusion'' in robot perception and control algorithms to achieve these three characteristics. On the perception side, we fuse multiple sensor modalities and demonstrate generalization to new task instances and robustness to sensor failures. On the control side, we leverage fusion by combining known models with learned policies, making our policy learning substantially more sample efficient.

Download or read book Multisensor Fusion and Integration for Intelligent Systems written by Lee Suk-han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?eld of multi-sensor fusion and integration is growing into signi?cance as our societyisintransitionintoubiquitouscomputingenvironmentswithroboticservices everywhere under ambient intelligence. What surround us are to be the networks of sensors and actuators that monitor our environment, health, security and safety, as well as the service robots, intelligent vehicles, and autonomous systems of ever heightened autonomy and dependability with integrated heterogeneous sensors and actuators. The ?eld of multi-sensor fusion and integration plays key role for m- ing the above transition possible by providing fundamental theories and tools for implementation. This volume is an edition of the papers selected from the 7th IEEE International Conference on Multi-Sensor Integration and Fusion, IEEE MFI‘08, held in Seoul, Korea, August 20–22, 2008. Only 32 papers out of the 122 papers accepted for IEEE MFI’08 were chosen and requested for revision and extension to be included in this volume. The 32 contributions to this volume are organized into three parts: Part I is dedicated to the Theories in Data and Information Fusion, Part II to the Multi-Sensor Fusion and Integration in Robotics and Vision, and Part III to the Applications to Sensor Networks and Ubiquitous Computing Environments. To help readers understand better, a part summary is included in each part as an introduction. The summaries of Parts I, II, and III are prepared respectively by Prof. Hanseok Ko, Prof. Sukhan Lee and Prof. Hernsoo Hahn.

Download or read book Snake Robots written by Pål Liljebäck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snake Robots is a novel treatment of theoretical and practical topics related to snake robots: robotic mechanisms designed to move like biological snakes and able to operate in challenging environments in which human presence is either undesirable or impossible. Future applications of such robots include search and rescue, inspection and maintenance, and subsea operations. Locomotion in unstructured environments is a focus for this book. The text targets the disparate muddle of approaches to modelling, development and control of snake robots in current literature, giving a unified presentation of recent research results on snake robot locomotion to increase the reader’s basic understanding of these mechanisms and their motion dynamics and clarify the state of the art in the field. The book is a complete treatment of snake robotics, with topics ranging from mathematical modelling techniques, through mechatronic design and implementation, to control design strategies. The development of two snake robots is described and both are used to provide experimental validation of many of the theoretical results. Snake Robots is written in a clear and easily understandable manner which makes the material accessible by specialists in the field and non-experts alike. Numerous illustrative figures and images help readers to visualize the material. The book is particularly useful to new researchers taking on a topic related to snake robots because it provides an extensive overview of the snake robot literature and also represents a suitable starting point for research in this area.
