The contributors address barriers, strategies, and considerations such as the comparative merits of starting a career at an HBCU or PWI, or at a public or private institution.Their stories shine light on how to develop the most effective leadership style, how to communicate, and the importance of leading with credibility. They dwell on the necessity of listening to one’s inner voice in guiding decisions, of maintaining integrity and having a clear sense of values, and of developing a realistic sense of personal limitations and abilities. They illustrate how to combine institutional and personal priorities with service to the community; share how the authors carved out their distinct and purposeful career paths; and demonstrate the importance of the mentoring they received and provided along the way. A theoretical chapter provides a frame for reflecting on the paths traveled. These accounts and reflections provide enlightenment, inspiration, and nuggets of wisdom for all Black women who want to advance their careers in higher education.

Book excerpt: This study examined the extent of work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC) among senior female administrators in Mid-Atlantic community colleges. Further, this study examined measures of job satisfaction and occupational commitment as outcomes of WFC and FWC for the participants of the study. This quantitative study surveyed five hundred and three (n = 503) women in senior administrative positions in 103 Mid-Atlantic community colleges which were member institutions of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Significant findings indicated that the participants experienced more WFC as compared to FWC. Other findings revealed that age and marital status significantly influenced the levels of WFC. Although the participants reported a significant level of WFC, no correlations to organizational commitment and job satisfaction were established. Implications and recommendations for community college boards of trustees and human resource officers are suggested as community colleges evaluate their work-family culture, policies and practices. -- Abstract.

Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others—included expanded opportunities for higher education in their Declaration of Sentiments at the first Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York, in l848. By then, the first American institutions to educate women had been founded, among them, Mt. Holyoke Seminary, in l837. However, not until after the Civil War did most universities admit women—and not for egalitarian purposes. War casualties had caused a drop in enrollment and the states needed teachers. Women students paid tuition, but, as teachers, were paid salaries half that of men. By the late 20th century, there were more female than male students of higher education, but women remained underrepresented at the higher levels of educational leadership and training. This volume covers everything from historical and cultural context and gender theory to women in the curriculum and as faculty and administrators.

Book excerpt: The perceptions and experiences of female community college administrators, particularly those that are part of the Millennial generation, have often been neglected in current research. This study examines community college leadership in a new context, by exploring the lived experiences of female identifying Millennials. More specifically, this study was developed to better understand how gender may impact Millennial women's perceptions of leadership overall, as well as their perceived ability to move into senior-level leadership roles within the community college. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this study included the use of semi-structured interviews to obtain data from twenty female Millennial community college administrators across the United States. This study utilized a phenomenological approach in order to identify key themes from the interviews. Findings from this study support the view that inequities and injustices are still present for women, including Millennial women, working in community college administration. The findings further revealed that institutions of higher education need to continue striving for more equitable policies and procedures. The stories and experiences shared within this study shed light on the current environment and institutional culture as it pertains to female identifying, Millennial administrators. More broadly, this research provides new insight into identifying and altering existing structures of inequity within the community college.
