Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is God's purpose and plan for us all to grow old and to go through physical changes. But it is not God's purpose for us to grow old and stop serving Him. Everything changes because our God is a God of change. There is nothing stationary about God. He is always moving and progressing forward and, as Christians, we are part of something God is doing, regardless of our age or physical condition. So regardless of how old you are or how you feel physically, God still has something for you to do for His kingdom. Regardless of age, you have high value to God. God does not want his people to retire from His service. He needs you now more than he has ever needed you in all your life. He needs you during all of your living years. I don't see any place in God's concept for life that people retire and sit in a rocking chair all the rest of their days. That is not God's plan for your life. Stop living like you are already dead! Be excited about your future regardless of how long your past goes back. The doors ahead of you are open. Be creative and productive all the way up to the time God calls you home. Get involved in your church or community organization. Be a light to the world and shine until your last breath. Don't let your age or physical inabilities ever stop you from doing what God is asking you to do. Grab hold of your eternal vision and God will use you for that ministry He still has planned for you.

Book excerpt: Is the world better off without Christianity? Combining narrative with keen critique of contemporary debates, author and historian John Dickson gives an honest account of 2,000 years of Christian history that helps us understand what Christianity is and what it's meant to be. To say that the Christian Church has an "image problem" doesn't quite capture it. From the Crusades and the Inquisition to the racism and abuse present in today's Church--both in Catholic and Protestant traditions--the institution that Christ established on earth has a lot to answer for. But the Church has also had moments throughout history when it has been in tune with Jesus' teachings--from the rise of charity to the invention of hospitals. For defenders of the faith, it's important to be able to recognize the good and bad in the church's history and be inspired to live aligned with Christ. For skeptics, this book is a thought-provoking introduction to the idea that Christianity is, despite all, an essential foundation of our civilization. Bullies and Saints will take you on a big-picture journey from the Sermon on the Mount to the modern church: Giving contextual accounts of infamous chapters of Christian history, such as the Crusades, and acknowledging their darkness. Outlining the great movements of the faith and defending its heroes and saints, some of whom are not commonly recognized. Examining the Church beside the teachings and life of Jesus and how it has succeeded in its mission to imitate Christ.

Download or read book Stories Streets and Saints written by Anthony V. Riccio and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories, Streets, and Saints documents the history of an important Italian American neighborhood, Boston's North End, from the age of immigration at the turn of the twentieth century to the era of neighborhood upheaval in the "New Boston" of the 1980s. Drawing on years of fieldwork, on-site photography, and scholarly research, Anthony V. Riccio records, translates, and transcribes compelling oral histories of elderly Italian American storytellers who weave social history in their unique village idiom, providing an intimate look at daily life in an Italian American neighborhood. Testimonies of post-Unification southern Italy reconstruct the dire social and economic conditions that caused millions to pursue the promise of America. Rare firsthand stories of the Spanish Flu offer timely narratives in the wake of COVID-19, and eyewitness descriptions reconstruct the horrific Molasses Explosion of 1919. Riccio's own photographs from 1979 to 1983, along with images from old family albums, illustrate these oral histories, creating a lasting record of the experiences of Italian Americans, who, like many other ethnic groups, contributed mightily to the building of America.
