Book excerpt: I never really thought about living to be 73 years old, but here I am. Not only have I survived, I am comparatively healthy and happy. I do notice, however, several people around my age, who have different levels of health issues and impairments. This observation has led me to do some research into what would make an older person's life a little easier. Of course, we would all benefit from a full-time maid or cook, but for most of us that is not realistic. So, this book is dedicated to the middle class, and the working class of people who are not millionaires, or able to easily move to an expensive assisted living facility. If you gain one thing from this book that makes your life safer and easier as you age, then I have accomplished my mission. If you gain many things from this book that make your life simpler and easier, then I am very grateful to have been the one to enlighten you. There are great many HINTS posted in the main text of this Guide to give you something to strive to change or accomplish now. There are also many, many resources at the end of this Guide for you to do more research and learn more about the topic or topics of aging that interest you most.

Book More Senior Moments

Download or read book More Senior Moments written by David Wayne Silva and published by David Silva. This book was released on 2007-01-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seniors, this is our book. It contains our stories and our ideas. It is about us. I just put it together. Most of the stories and information in this book come from your friends and neighbors, from my own experience and from the medical profession that takes care of us. After years of working as a counselor I find it easy to approach my senior friends and ask for their ideas on different subjects. They feel comfortable talking about their emotions and their physical problems, even touchy subjects like dressing themselves, sexual matters, loneliness and depression. Many senior men and women have worked together with me on this book. It is good that we can band together and help each other have more enriching lives while we accept the challenges of aging. Be Encouraged. You are not alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving collection of essays on aging and happiness Drawing on more than six decades' worth of lessons from his storied career as a writer and professor, Willard Spiegelman reflects with candid humor and sophistication on growing old. Senior Moments is a series of discrete essays that, when taken together, constitute the life of a man who, despite Western cultural notions of aging as something to be denied, overcome, and resisted, has continued to relish the simplest of pleasures: reading, looking at art, talking, and indulging in occasional fits of nostalgia while also welcoming what inevitably lies ahead. Spiegelman's expertly crafted book considers, with wisdom and elegance, how to be alert to the joys that brim from unexpected places even as death draws near. Senior Moments is a foray into the felicity and follies that age brings; a consideration of how and what one reads or rereads in late adulthood; the eagerness for, and disappointment in, long-awaited reunions, at which the past comes alive in the present. A clear-eyed book of memories, written in eight searching and courageously honest essays, Senior Moments is guaranteed to stimulate, stir, and restore.

Getting to the good solutions for complex management challenges can make the difference between fulfillment and frustration for teams—and, ultimately, between the success and failure of companies. Will Larson’s An Elegant Puzzle focuses on the particular challenges of engineering management—from sizing teams to handling technical debt to performing succession planning—and provides a path to the good solutions. Drawing from his experience at Digg, Uber, and Stripe, Larson has developed a thoughtful approach to engineering management for leaders of all levels at companies of all sizes. An Elegant Puzzle balances structured principles and human-centric thinking to help any leader create more effective and rewarding organizations for engineers to thrive in.

Book excerpt: Monica Graham got her first inkling that her eighty-nine-year-old mother might not be able to continue living on her own when she coated chicken breasts with dishwashing liquid for dinner. It was an easy mistake--the yellow detergent lived right beside the olive oil on the kitchen counter. Graham could easily have done the same thing herself, she thought. But as her visit with her mom in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, progressed, Graham--who lives in Pictou, Nova Scotia--began to recognize that her mother had been successfully hiding increasingly apparent signs that her memory was failing; she wasn't getting by as well as she had been letting on. So began the arduous process of finding and securing a safe place for her mother to live--and of clearing out several decades' worth of belongings. Part memoir, part cautionary tale, part how-to guide, Senior Moment offers insight and practical guidance for Atlantic Canadians on how to usher a loved one into the world of continuing care. With wit, wisdom, and a dose of whimsy, author Monica Graham explores the inevitable hurdles of caring for our elders.
