Book The Diary of Andrew Fuller 1780 1801

Download or read book The Diary of Andrew Fuller 1780 1801 written by Michael D. McMullen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite his prominent role during the last quarter of the eighteenth century in promoting evangelical Calvinism among British Particular Baptists, only portions of the diary of Andrew Fuller (1754-1815), one of the most important surviving manuscripts from that century, have appeared in print in various volumes published between 1816 and 1882, portions usually inaccurately transcribed and highly editorialized. The current edition is the first complete and accurate transcription of Fuller’s diary based on the sole surviving volume now residing at Bristol Baptist College. This edition, with exhaustive identifications, notes, and valuable appendices for students of Baptist history, provides a fascinating glimpse into Fuller’s ministry at Soham and Kettering during a period (1780-1801) when he became the titular head of the Particular Baptists as a result of his preaching throughout Northamptonshire and surrounding counties; his writing, such as his influential work, The Gospel Worthy of All Acceptation (1785); and his multi-national work as founding secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society (1792), a position he diligently maintained until his death in 1815, having left a legacy unequalled by any other minister of his generation.

Book A Discourse on Self Examination

Download or read book A Discourse on Self Examination written by Nathaniel Vincent and published by . This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathaniel Vincent (1639-1697) was a nonconformist puritan divine. His colleagues called him ¿smart¿brisk and well-rounded as a minister of the Gospel, holding a facetious and jolly humor, as well as being a considerable scholar.¿In one of the best treatments on self-examination ever written, Vincent takes great care teaching, ¿Prove your own selves,¿ from 2 Corinthians 13:5. Christians often do not take the necessary time to examine themselves in light of true Christian conversion and practice. The Apostle Paul even says that Christians must examine themselves before coming to the Lord¿s Supper. It is a requirement and commandment of utmost importance.Vincent explains what it means to prove ourselves, what it is to be proved, what we are to prove, the manner of proving, the rule of proving, special seasons of proving, and arguments for self-examination. He also shows differences between Christians and unbelievers in several cases of conscience, with a practical section of sin-mortifying application. He then concludes the book with how self-examination works prior to the Lord¿s Supper, and gives a number of personal meditations on how Christians should think before they come to the Lord¿s Supper. This is not a scan or facsimile, and has been updated in modern English for easy reading. It also has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Ideological Stylistics and Fictional Discourse

Download or read book Ideological Stylistics and Fictional Discourse written by Ganakumaran Subramaniam and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on ideology and its function in fictional discourse, exploring the link between textual ideologies and real ideologies in text-production environments. It attempts this through a specific focus on the social and linguistic elements that control the presence, the use, and the presentation of ideology, and also the way in which linguistic elements are controlled and manipulated by the collective consciousness of the text producer. This correlation between fictional discourse and ideology is revealed through a series of chapters that cover four closely interrelated areas, focusing specifically on Malaysian and Singaporean fiction. Firstly, the positioning of Malaysian and Singaporean literatures in English as individual literary traditions. This is to counter the non-recognition of Malaysian and Singaporean literatures as individual traditions in spite of five decades of independence. Secondly, establishing a contextual (socio-cultural and political) framework as a basis for discussion on real ideology, arguing that Malaysian and Singaporean writers have moved beyond the anti-western nationalistic stage and on to more personal and communal concerns such as race relations, identity and a sense of belonging. Thirdly, rationalising the social structures of ideology that are likely to be found in the Malaysian and Singaporean social milieus, especially location and text-specific social variables of ideology. Lastly, it seeks to reveal a linguistic-oriented approach for the study of textual ideologies and for linking textual ideologies to ideologies in the overall text production environment. The book ultimately shows the significant possibilities of systematic links between textual ideology, and the real ideology in the text production environment, through what can best be termed as ideological stylistics. In doing so, it aims to contribute significantly to studies of ideology in general and more specifically on ideology on Malaysian and Singaporean literatures in English.

Book Figuring Modesty in Feminist Discourse Across the Americas 1633 1700

Download or read book Figuring Modesty in Feminist Discourse Across the Americas 1633 1700 written by Dr Tamara Harvey and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventive in its approach and provocative in its analysis, this study offers fresh readings of the arguments and practices of four seventeenth-century Euro-American women: Anne Bradstreet, Anne Hutchinson, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and Marie de l'Incarnation. Tamara Harvey here compares functionalist treatments of the body by these women, offering a new way to think of corporeality as a device in literary and religious expressions of modesty by women. In doing so, Harvey explores the engagement of these women in ongoing religious, political, scientific and social debates that would have been understood by the authors' contemporaries in both Europe and America.

Download or read book Salighed As Happiness written by Abrahim H. Khan and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an exposition of Salighed, a concept at the heart of Kierkegaard's thought, and the dialectical starting point for his reflections on what it means to live a genuinely human life. Kierkegaard studies to date appear to have underestimated the importance of the word and the concepts that lie behind it—perhaps because the word appears easily translated into the English forms of "eternal happiness" or "blessedness." This, suggests Khan, does little justice to the concepts behind the word, and does even less justice to the relationships of the concept of Salighed to other concepts crucial to Kierkegaard's thought. Khan's approach to this word/concept study has been greatly augmented by his use of the computer in analyzing word-relatedness, context, and frequency of occurrence, both within individual works and in comparing one work with a context of the Kierkegaard corpus. The volume will, of course, be of interest to students of Kierkegaard. It will also be of interest to those scholars intrigued by the possibilities of using computers in linguistic research and in literary studies.
