Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jiu Jitsu: A Comprehensive and Copiously Illustrated Treatise on the Wonderful Japanese Method of Attack and Self-Defense The Japanese method of personal attack and self-defense is known as Jiu-Jitsu. Literally, it means the gentle art - of making one's opponent use his strength to his own disadvantage. The Japanese must be an economical people; for rather than see good force worse than wasted, they contrive to have it expended in such a manner as will do (them) the most good. You know how, in the case of a certain class of rapid-fire guns, instead of trying to overcome that vicious habit of "kicking," a way was found to utilize that unpleasant recoil in discharging the empty shell and reloading. Thus it is with those who practise Jiu-Jitsu. They do not meet force with force opposing the fierce rush of an enemy or trying to stop a heavy fist with some part of the body. This would be inartistic, possibly shocking. On the contrary, the gentle artist with his imperturbable smile, instead of trying to obstruct, politely helps his enemy along, to his own undoing. Book Her Own Hero

Download or read book Her Own Hero written by Wendy L Rouse and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprising roots of the self-defense movement and the history of women’s empowerment. At the turn of the twentieth century, women famously organized to demand greater social and political freedoms like gaining the right to vote. However, few realize that the Progressive Era also witnessed the birth of the women’s self-defense movement. It is nearly impossible in today’s day and age to imagine a world without the concept of women’s self defense. Some women were inspired to take up boxing and jiu-jitsu for very personal reasons that ranged from protecting themselves from attacks by strangers on the street to rejecting gendered notions about feminine weakness and empowering themselves as their own protectors. Women’s training in self defense was both a reflection of and a response to the broader cultural issues of the time, including the women’s rights movement and the campaign for the vote. Perhaps more importantly, the discussion surrounding women’s self-defense revealed powerful myths about the source of violence against women and opened up conversations about the less visible violence that many women faced in their own homes. Through self-defense training, women debunked patriarchal myths about inherent feminine weakness, creating a new image of women as powerful and self-reliant. Whether or not women consciously pursued self-defense for these reasons, their actions embodied feminist politics. Although their individual motivations may have varied, their collective action echoed through the twentieth century, demanding emancipation from the constrictions that prevented women from exercising their full rights as citizens and human beings. This book is a fascinating and comprehensive introduction to one of the most important women’s issues of all time. This book will provoke good debate and offer distinct responses and solutions.

Book Self Defence For The Individual

Download or read book Self Defence For The Individual written by Billy C Sandow and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original reissue of this manual of close combat of 1919. Excerpt from the book: " It has been necessary to revise my book on In-fighting for the U. S. Army, which was published as a text on the subject at Camp Dix, N. J., in order to have it conform to the needs of the civilian as a means of self-defense against the thug or thief. That a practical method of self-defense for civilians serves a need is a well-established fact. And that the system best adapted to one's need should be other than a knowledge of the so-called manly art of self-defense, or boxing, is one of the lessons learned from this great war."

Book Self Defense

  • ISBN : 1839761083
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Self Defense written by Elsa Dorlin and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant study of violent self-defense in the struggle for liberation by an award-winning philosopher Is violent self-defense ethical? In the history of colonialism, racism, sexism, capitalism, there has long been a dividing line between bodies "worthy of defending" and those who have been disarmed and rendered defenseless. In 1685, for example, France's infamous "Code Noir" forbade slaves from carrying weapons, under penalty of the whip. In nineteenth-century Algeria, the colonial state outlawed the use of arms by Algerians, but granted French settlers the right to bear arms. Today, some lives are seen to be worth so little that Black teenagers can be shot in the back for appearing "threatening" while their killers are understood, by the state, to be justified. That those subject to the most violence have been forcibly made defenseless raises, for any movement of liberation, the question of using violence in the interest of self-defense. Here, philosopher Elsa Dorlin looks across the global history of the left - from slave revolts to the knitting women of the French Revolution and British suffragists' training in ju-jitsu, from the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to the Black Panther Party, from queer neighborhood patrols to Black Lives Matter, to trace the politics, philosophy, and ethics of self defense. In this history she finds a "martial ethics of the self": a practice in which violent self defense is the only means for the oppressed to ensure survival and to build a liveable future. In this sparkling and provocative book, drawing on theorists from Thomas Hobbes to Fred Hampton, Frantz Fanon to Judith Butler, Michel Foucault to June Jordan, Dorlin has reworked the very idea of modern governance and political subjectivity. Translated from the French by Kieran Aarons.

Book Boxing a Manual Devoted to the Art of Self Defence

Download or read book Boxing a Manual Devoted to the Art of Self Defence written by James Edward Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boxing, a Manual Devoted to the Art of Self-Defence: A Perfect Treatise on Boxing, With Valuable Illustrations Showing Just What Positions to Take When Going to Lead and Also in Relation to Defence There is no exercise that will so surely cultivate activity, endur ance and strength, as boxing. Besides being an excellent school for the nerves and temper, it also develops the body, gives symmetry to the parts, and grace to the movements. Boxing has been called brutal those who hold that view look only at the worst aspect of the means; being an expert boxer does not tempt one to bully or fight, any more than being an expert pen man would tempt a person to commit forgery. Our experience has been, that the best boxers are generally men of great forbearance un der provocation, and we are satisfied that the knowledge of boxing, renders men not quarrelsome, but forbearing; for they feel that it is glorious to possess a giant's strength, but cowardly to use it like a giant. It is in many respects the best of all exercises; every muscle in the body is used; head, arms, legs and feet are all called into play; your tools are always with you; and we may say that this is the only exercise requiring rapidity and strength combined.
