Book Self Care Nursing in a Multicultural Context

Download or read book Self Care Nursing in a Multicultural Context written by Juliene G. Lipson and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1996-05-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As health care reform increasingly emphasizes preventative care and health promotion it is becoming increasingly important for individuals to attain and maintain good health. In Self-Care Nursing in a Multicultural Context, authors Juliene Lipson and Nancy Steiger seek to provide nurses and other health care professionals with the tools necessary to teach clients how to think through and decide how to take care of themselves and when to seek professional care, whether in health or in chronic or acute illness. This informative volume intersects two important issues in nursing--self-care and culturally component care. It proceeds from the premise that self-care is a powerful philosophical, biological, and psychological basis for nursing practice in a variety of settings. Cultural issues are stressed throughout the volume, including a section on cross-cultural communication and cultural influences on learning styles. The book is divided into four sections: the historical and theoretical aspects of self-care; the components of health such as nutrition, activity, and stress management; and the impact of self-care in light of health care reform, changing health care settings, and the concept of health communities. Health care professionals as well as students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels will find the volume imminently practical and relevant to their work.

In Back to the Basics: A Nurse's Pocket Guide to Self-Care, Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, shares with us quick tips and easy-to-use tools for the busy nurse! Elizabeth brings us back to the basics of nursing; reminding us why taking care of ourselves, as the people taking care of patients, is so imperative to do. Often, nurses find themselves stressed, burnt out, and ill. Why? Because they do not spend the time, or just do not have any time of their own, on their own health and well-being. The nurse is often so busy caring, giving, and nurturing another person that their own health and well-being goes out the window. Elizabeth invites the busy nurse to slow down, listen to themselves, and figure out what is important, what is desired, and what gives life meaning. Through her 12 Steps to Self-Care, and this quick, easy-to-read guide book, Elizabeth shares valuable nuggets of information, wisdom, and advice from her own healing, learning, and growth experience. It is a short, but necessary tool-kit that will fit into any scrub pocket!

Book The Importance of Self care for Nurses

Download or read book The Importance of Self care for Nurses written by Jennifer Buchanan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of self-care is not a new one to the nursing community. It is something taught and implemented regularly in patient care. Nurses however, forget that self-care should play a role in their own lives as well. Studies have shown that nurses who practice self-care regularly are more compassionate and are able to give higher quality of care to their patients (Nahm, Warren, Zhu, An, and Brown, 2012). Holistic care is a highlight of nursing education and should be emphasized for the nurse as much as it is by the nurse. Nursing is a stressful career based around giving without much extra time to incorporate time for themselves. It can also be difficult for nurses to remember to care for themselves with personalities driven towards giving to others. The relationship between how one feels about themselves and how they feel about others is an important component of self-care practice (Silva Ferreira, Barcide Souza, De Oliveira Souza, Assis Tavares, and Da Silva Pires, 2015). Nurses should be able to feel positively about themselves and the work they do by replenishing themselves with self-care. This paper will examine a plan to incorporate self-care practices with the workplace. The hospital is the ideal environment to incorporate a safe place where nurses could take some time for themselves. Promoting the workplace to play a role in the wellbeing of their nurses also promotes a happier and more fulfilling place to work. Nurses deserve to replenish the giving nature they give out on a daily basis. Self-care is the answer nursing burnout, compassion fatigue, and disconnecting from patients and quality of care practices (Ulrich, 2013).

Book Self Care for Nurses in the Time of a Pandemic

Download or read book Self Care for Nurses in the Time of a Pandemic written by Erica Jones and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-care includes many different things that one can do to improve their mental, physical, and emotional health. It may seem obvious that caring for ourselves is essential, however; many of us overlook this basic need, especially when we focus so much energy on caring for others. Nurses are prone to abandon their own self-care as they focus so intently on the well-being of patients, often while acting as caregivers to their own children, elderly parents, and others. People enter the healthcare field for many different reasons, but however they get there, all nurses deserve to have meaningful work that sustains them financially and doesn't destroy them physically and emotionally. I believe that self-care is one of the keys to a successful and even joyful nursing career. The human spirit has an amazing ability for resilience and we are highly adaptable. The coronavirus pandemic has challenged us all and shocked us to the core, causing many healthcare workers to despair, however; by continuing to care for ourselves, our patients, our co-workers, and our human condition with mindfulness, gratitude, and simple daily steps, we can sustain ourselves and thrive. Learn practical tips for caring for your physical, emotional, and spiritual health, as well as ways you can change your attitude and prevent burnout in difficult situations. Topics include nutrition and exercise, taking time for ourselves, emotional strategies to improve resilience, and how to discover what drives us forward. Sometimes the right decision is not always continuing on in an unhealthy situation, but making a change. The workplace culture and ways to improve communication are additional ways that we can improve our work and meet the challenge of caring for patients with compassion and dignity in today's healthcare climate. Vignettes illustrate how the coronavirus pandemic has affected healthcare workers, and how self-care is so necessary in dealing with stressful situations. Learn about how you can improve your self-care, increase your satisfaction with work, and grow a thriving career in healthcare by reading this book.

Download or read book A Nurse s Medicine Basket written by Tina Bradley Gain and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no secret that compassionate care is at the heart of nursing. However, there is an outdated mindset idealized by many healthcare organizations that nursing includes self-sacrifice. In truth, nurses are in dire need of the ability for self-care to survive and thrive in today's healthcare environment. Accepting the unrealistic expectation of self-sacrifice serves no role in the nursing profession and devalues the very hub of the healthcare system-nurses. A Nurse's Medicine Basket: Tools for Compassionate Self-Care is intended to bring awareness and understanding to current and ongoing issues nurses experience as they practice the art and science of nursing. Within the book, voices of nurses from across the nation and various healthcare systems share their stories about self-care, which have greatly impacted their nursing practice -for better or worse. Ten timely nursing topics are discussed, emphasizing the value of self-care to support nurses in navigating the current healthcare environment. - The Golden Rule of Nursing: To Thine Own Self Be True- It's Not Always about the Paycheck- You Don't Know Everything...And You Never Will- Develop Your Voice-You're Gonna Need It- Build Up Your Team: Be The Type Of Nurse You Want To Work With- Ask For Help- Who is the Patient?- Compassionate Self-Care- Compassion for Management- Nursing LeadershipThe current climate of nursing has changed considerably since nursing's professional debut in 1860. The disconnect and imbalance of what is expected from nursing professionals and the reality of what nurses actually do has become a hot topic amongst nurses. A Nurse's Medicine Basket: Tools for Compassionate Self-Care provides thought-provoking context for advocating for and empowering the role of nurses as defined by true nursing practice. A must-read book for nurses, healthcare leaders, workplace managers, student nurses and nursing educators.Authored by a nurse with more than 30 years' experience across a variety of healthcare settings, A Nurse's Medicine Basket: Tools for Compassionate Self-Care demonstrates the correlation between self-care and higher job satisfaction, improved patient care outcomes, and stronger, more authentic working relationship with peers, managers and patients.
