Book excerpt: The object of this invention is to provide ion exchange resins exhibiting improved selectivity towards copper, nickel and cobalt for separation from each other and from other metals in solution and improved loading capacity, when compared with those resins covered by the parent patent No. SA 775398. A polymeric ion exchange resin of the cross-linked type in which the active groups are comprised either wholly or in part by an imidazole group which is in turn attached directly to a cross-linked polymerised vinyl backbone. The optional substituents on the imidazole ring include pyridyl, imidazole or amino groups. Part of the invention is that the resins can be manufactured by firstly attaching at least a part and preferably all the imidazole ring (the functional group) into a vinyl group and subsequently polymerising the monomer with a desired content of a suitable cross-linking agent.
