Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVJonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is early Americas greatest theologian and philosopher, yet six decades have passed since an authoritative anthology of his writings has appeared to guide the reader through his voluminous works. This book is a new and comprehensive collection of selected compositions by Edwards. Providing excerpts not only from many of his most famous published writings but also from previously unpublished works, it will be essential reading for scholars, students, and all those interested in early American history and religion. The selections are divided into two major categories. The first deals with the "public" Edwards and traces the development of his thinking from his earliest days as a Yale student to the end of his life and ministry. These writings consist of treatises and sermons he published, including Faithful Narrative, Religious Affections, and Freedom of the Will, as well as the notes that remained in manuscript until after his death, most importantly the "Miscellanies," Edwardss main series of theological entries. The second category provides details of the "personal" Edwards as revealed in autobiographical writings and in correspondence and family papers./div

Book Jonathan Edwards and the American Experience

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards and the American Experience written by Nathan O. Hatch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1989-10-05 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universally recognized as a seminal figure in American intellectual history, Jonathan Edwards has been the focus of considerable scholarly attention in a variety of academic disciplines, including religion, history, literature, and philosophy. Because these disciplines discuss him in relation to different intellectual traditions, Edwards scholarship remains segmented. This volume represents the first attempt to provide a synthetic vision of Edwards and his contributions to American culture. Its fifteen previously unpublished essays present the best contemporary literary, historical, theological, and philosophical thinking on Edwards, locating him in his full historical context and demonstrating the continuity of his influence. Together, they provide the fullest account to date of his role in the development of the American consciousness. Book The Thought of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book The Thought of Jonathan Edwards written by Miklos Veto and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards is the greatest theologian of colonial America as well as its first important philosopher. As a theologian, he represents without any concession Calvinistic Orthodoxy, re-thought and re-lived through the experience of the Great Awakening. The large majority of his writings are of a theological character, yet this theology is articulated and expressed through a systematic philosophical reflection. Edwardsian thought covers three major areas: First, being, grace, and glory; then, the doctrine of the will extending to the study of the original sin and evil; finally, an entirely original theory of knowledge synthesizing spirituality, aesthetics, and epistemology. The present book, the first edition of which appeared in French almost thirty years ago, is a uniquely comprehensive study of the work of Jonathan Edwards. It discusses all the aspects of his thought over against the background of classical Protestant theology and of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Western philosophy. Our time witnesses a significant renewal of interest in Jonathan Edwards. Professor Veto's book should prove to be a major contribution to assist and to guide the readers of "America's Theologian."

Book Jonathan Edwards s Vision of Reality

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards s Vision of Reality written by John J. Bombaro and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Sang Hyun Lee's revolutionary commentary, The Philosophical Theology of Jonathan Edwards, scholars have considered the possibilities of understanding Jonathan Edwards's thought in terms of dispositional laws, forces, and habits. While some scholars reject the notion of a dispositional ontology in Edwards, others have taken the concept of disposition in his thought beyond the usage the Northampton minister ever indicated, especially with respect to soteriological considerations. The preacher of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is made to be an inclusivist, if not a crypto-universalist. Jonathan Edwards's Vision of Reality substantiates that Edwards, in an effort to combat deistic and materialistic Enlightenment paradigms, employs dispositions in his philosophy, but that his radical theocentrism and Calvinistic particularism established its boundaries within his apologetical reconsideration of spatiotemporal and metaphysical reality. Within his "spiritual vision" of reality, Edwards leaves no stone unturned: history and even the reprobate find inherent value and a positive functional role not only in God's program of self-glorification but as manifestations of divine being--the damned are "deformities" in God. The logic of Edwards's theocentric vision of reality pushes his ideas to the limits of acceptable Reformed orthodoxy, and sometimes beyond those limits.

Book God is a Communicative Being

Download or read book God is a Communicative Being written by William M. Schweitzer and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past half century, there has been a proliferation of scholarship on the great American theologian Jonathan Edwards. However, the vast majority of this output confines itself to the details of his work. With some welcome exceptions, the forest has often been missed for the trees. In this ground breaking study William Schweitzer presents a new reading of Edwards: He starts with the question what is distinctive in Edwards' theology? The answer comes in Edwards' insight into Trinitarian life. God is eternally communicative of his knowledge, love, and joy among the Three Persons of the Trinity, and this divine communicativeness was for Edwards the explanation for why God created the universe. More specifically, however, Edwards believed that God's communication carries with it the Trinitarian hallmark of "harmony.†? This hallmark is not always east to discern, even for the regenerate. Edwards' lifelong project-as demonstrated by the common purpose of all three unfinished "Great Works†?-was to interpret the harmony found in and among the several media of revelation.

Book The Trinitarian Theology of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book The Trinitarian Theology of Jonathan Edwards written by Steven M. Studebaker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Jonathan Edwards scholars have increasingly recognized the central role that the Trinity played in his thought, no work brings together Edwards' central texts on the Trinity and interprets and applies them to contemporary theological issues. This book reveals how the doctrine of the Trinity transformed Edwards' ministry and how the Trinity can inform current evangelical thought, life, and ministry. Key primary texts, interpretation, and application of Edwards' trinitarian theology are all presented here. Part one features Edwards' chief trinitarian writings and provides an in-depth analysis on his doctrine. Part two sets Edwards' trinitarianism in historical context. Part three demonstrates how Edwards employed the Trinity in his sermons, in spiritual formation, and in other areas of doctrine.

Book Beauty and Sensibility in the Thought of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book Beauty and Sensibility in the Thought of Jonathan Edwards written by Roland Delattre and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illuminating analysis of Jonathan Edwards' philosophical-theological-ethical program focuses on his concept of beauty as our central clue to the nature of reality and the life of God. Delattre shows that beauty not only provides Edwards with a model for the manner of divine governance but operates throughout his thought as both the goal and means of redemption. Essential to his understanding of the operation of beauty as the law of moral order is Edwards' aesthetic/affectional model of the self, which corresponds to his aesthetic articulation of the system of being and good. Thus the distinguishing mark of Edwards' theology--his elevation to centrality of both the primary beauty of being's cordial consent to being and the secondary beauty of harmony and proportion--is shown to be the key to his interpretation of the dynamics of the moral and spiritual life.

Download or read book The Young Jonathan Edwards written by William S. Morris and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1955 examination of Jonathan Edwards' formative years, Morris undertook a corrective of the prevailing view of Edwards' relation to John Locke. The result is an analysis of the intellectual milieu inhabited by Edwards during the years in which his philosophical vocabulary and his seminal theological concepts evolved. Long an unpublished dissertation, this massive work reflects that most unusual combination of being a pioneering exploration and, most likely, a definitive evaluation. Dr. Kenneth Minkema, Executive Director of the Jonathan Edwards Center, Yale University Other scholars have filled in our picture of Jonathan Edwards' mental world, adding new shades, hues and detail to our view of the young theologian. But no one matches William Morris's Young Jonathan Edwards for comprehension and virtuosity. His study is as rewarding as it is challenging. The Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University deserves our thanks for bringing this masterpiece back to us. Douglas A. Sweeney, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School Written at the onset of the academic recovery of Jonathan Edwards, William Morris's Chicago dissertation remains the best record of the young Edwards from his years at home and at Yale to his months at the Scots Presbyterian Church in New York, altogether an extensive reconstruction of how he came to think the way he did. That it will be widely available now is a welcome recovery in itself. - M.X. Lesser, Emeritus, Northeastern University William Sparkes Morris wrote The Young Jonathan Edwards as a dissertation at the University of Chicago and completed it in 1955. His dissertation was originally published in 1991 as part of the Chicago Studies in the History of American Religion, edited by Martin Mary and Jerald C. Brauer. Morris died in 1983 at the age of 67.
